    Archways are intrinsic of the style of homes when your house was built. We lived in one for 30 years, and the arches were beautiful and helped separate areas without blocking the entire wall. You've chosen the more modern look, but belive me, at least here in the Appalachian area of Virginia, we still have - and maintain - such homes, appreciating the materials, the labor, and the integrity of the builds - not to mention how lovely these old neighborhoods look.

    Loads of houses by me from the 1920s to 1950s era, where they originally had to go outside to enter via a basement walkout. And similar bad indoor DIY stairway additions.
    Seen one house where they had 2 DIY staircases in the basement. A 24 in wide stair case from a linen closet that then turned into an 18 inch wide staircase since a load bearing wall was in the way on one side. Second one was dug out into the garage, self poured concrete 20 inch Wide staircase! and the 3rd was the old original basement walkout.

    We have an Arch, from the living room to the front room. In the old days that was called the neatroom, for the sundays or when you had guests. Its an old farmhouse from 1935. The arch, is of brick. And the chimney is supported by it. So i left it. It gives caracter but if it wasn't there, i wouldn; t mind. where i am, if you're remodeling an older house and doing the kind of hallway work like you are, you're allowed to use the old dimension-codes as long as your wiring/plumbing is up to date. they call it "grandfathering" a remodel, i think? it's so that when you're marrying an old house to a newer part it looks seamless and you don't get the weird jogs like your hall has. i'm guessing your local codes don't allow for that? which is a bummer.

    I think those archways were a 50s thing. In what is now my Aunt's house, back in the 1950s they did renovations to a bunch of houses in our area and those arches appeared in all of them. My relatives from around the country experienced a similar thing from what we see of the old photos.

    • @johnhpalmer6098
      @johnhpalmer6098 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know this was 2 weeks ago, but just needed to clarify/correct you on the archway. As I thought, and a quick Google search verified, they began in the 1920's and were found in homes up through the 50's, most likely by then, they were mostly found in more traditionally styled homes through the mid 50's before falling out of fashion.

    I hope I didn’t miss where you may have already answered similar questions: Do you have to pull permits if you are DIYing your own home? If so, how long does the process take? Is the permitting cost cheaper because you are a pro or cheaper for DIYers working on their own home? If you have time or any plans on replying to Q&As I was just putting in a couple of questions. You are great and break everything down so easy to understand.

      Varies by state, for interior stuff in NJ anything cosmetic, no. anything structural, electrical, plumbing, HVAC technically yes.

    • @gregmize01
      @gregmize01 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hate the "it depends" response but in this case it's relevant. It varies by state and local rules and by WHAT your renovating or moving i.e. plumbing/gas/electrical

    • @TheTootsieroll23
      @TheTootsieroll23 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Brian and Gregory, that sucks that the rules can vary so much depending on location but it’s good to know. I really don’t know anything about DIYing a home, but hopefully when I get my fixer upper I can do a little on my own and of course pay a pro for the big stuff just wanted to know if you need permission to change the tiles or toilet 🚽 in your own home.

    • @TheFixerHomeRepair
      @TheFixerHomeRepair  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yup, Brian and Gregory are correct in saying it depends on the state and even the city/town. Where I live (Massachusetts) you need a permit for anything unless it is cosmetic like wall coverings, flooring, things like that. You also can pull your own permit if you own the home and are doing the work yourself but need to sign a workers compensation affidavit that basically says you are not covered if something goes wrong, which makes sense because you wouldn't sue yourself. You are also allowed to do everything yourself (framing, wiring, roofing, etc.) except plumbing. For that you need a licensed and insured plumber. As far as the price goes it is the same if you were a company or a home owner. And it usually goes by a certain amount of money per $1000 of estimated job cost. I think my latest permit for my kitchen/bedroom addition was $200 for example. My front deck was $45 i think... so not terrible when you are doing lot's of work already. And it does not take long at all in my city to get a permit as long as you have the plans written up and the permit filled out properly. I hope this helps to answer your questions. This might be a good conversation for a live Q&A event. 🤔. Thanks for the comment and for checking out the video!

    You removing the area of the archway reminded me of working on an 1896 house my ex and I bought back in ‘92. He was pulling out extremely old wood and stuff so we could make an arched closet/shelf area in the nursery. He was on a ladder, my mom was at floor level when a petrified rat fell on him, he yelled, it landed on her ! He jumped off the ladder, she hauled a** out of the house due to a major rodent phobia and I was just watching all pregnant. That dead rat was HUGE!!!!! I think we only found one other petrified rat in the house. 😂🐭

      It all depends on the content creator it can take a week from filming to upload or more, and with some channels, it can take a couple of months due to the amount of footage and time to edit them. Channels like Matt's Off Road Recovery has had videos upload 2, to 2.5 months after they were shot (Recovery videos, the build videos are uploaded much sooner, like shot during the week, edited and uploaded on the weekends for Sunday drop) is one example. Others like this channel, maybe the time lapse is much less, but it all depends on how many he has in the hopper in being edited, to be edited etc before uploading.

      Hey! I am in Massachusetts. Best thing is "word of mouth". If you have any friends that have had work done or maybe you can join a local facebook page and ask for recommendations. It is always good to hear from other people who have had work done. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

    how much do you think you've improved the value of your house and how much have you put into it?

    • @TheFixerHomeRepair
      @TheFixerHomeRepair  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is really tough to say. Would take a while to add it all up but I have at least put $30k-$40k in so far. The value is going up anyway because of the market but with the sweat equity I would say I have added at least $100k to the value. Maybe more! Thanks for stopping by and for the comment, Andy!

      No. Maybe you caught that during my live video? I did say I wish I could do that... but I cant unless I changed my heating system and knocked down the chimney, which I am not doing right now.

    From a code standpoint, does it really matter if your new wall is less than 36" if it's following the width of the old wall? Doesn't seem like a building inspector would be able to to discern where old ends and new begins. And a couple inches doesn't really affect egress if the old wall is not bumped to match the 36" minimum. Just kinda thinking out loud, not criticizing.

    Are you going to get a gas range for your kitchen remodel?

    • @TheFixerHomeRepair
      @TheFixerHomeRepair  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do not have gas right now. I would love to have a gas range though. I hear they are so much better than electric!

    • @nolongeramused8135
      @nolongeramused8135 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheFixerHomeRepair I've used both extensively, and electric ranges, even the best ones, come in a distant 2nd place to gas ranges. Even if you have to get a propane tank in your yard to run the thing, it's worth it.
      My favorite comment on the subject is that NOBODY has EVER said "Oh, yeah! We're cooking with electricity now!"

    Normally I would cringe to take a beautiful archway out but it does not match your house so you’re right get rid of it.

  • @cynthiacarter532
    @cynthiacarter532 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm trying to imagine the original floor plan. So it must have been a tiny house if there was an addition added. I like archways-our house is a single story modular built in 1978 by Boise Cascade so there's nothing that fancy where the 2 halves are joined. Your archway really was too small and closed in!

      Hey! In my case for my house. It does not take long at all. Typically I file the permit application and pick up the permit the next day. If it is commercial or you have to get variances/deal with zoning issues I am sure it takes longer. Thanks for the comment and for checking out the video!

    I see all the YT and Inta designers adding archways. I am not a fan of archways and feel they should all be removed like you are doing. It is because I am tall and some of them in the older homes can be a hazard to us tall folks!
