43 Yr old woman with 4 kids, know nothing about joists and walls but I'll take an hour 🤣🤣 something so calming about your videos. Love how tidy you are.
I swear I don't know what was funnier, watching you try and get the glass out of the wall, 🤣 or watching you inviting us all over for pizza, with no pizza in sight. 🍕 This is truly moving right along. So glad you have Mrs. Fixer there for her invaluable input!!!!! Great update. Thanks for sharing.
It’s amazing that you do these upgrades with your own skills, without having anyone come in and charge you a fortune. Now you can hold literally your head high going to the basement. Thanks for sharing your talent.
So, you gave us, mostly men, the long story of thinking and talking en re-thinking and the impression that during that process youre side was considered in the decisionmaking. Youre wife said no man, we get it. I mean, youre walking through her closet, you are already our hero. Great video again, loved it! Thnx.
I love it, even though the video was listed at 1 hour long it certainly did not feel that long. Movie directors could learn from you on editing some of the movies they do. Your video is insightful, intelligent, educational, humourous and just plain fun to watch. As for the work that too is awesome. Can't wait to see your next video. Stay well and thanks again for sharing. Oh forgot to say lowering the shelf was the way to go, even if it meant a slight change in the framing, mistakes not caught until after, never stop bothering you. Trust me.
The way you explain every step makes it so easy for me to follow and it makes your videos way more interesting! Love watching home Renos! You’re making your home more beautiful!
Being a 6ft tall woman, I find this a real necessity. Raising the height of the stair well is warranted, especially if I had to go up and down the stairs for laundry. Carry on... great job and super informative. I enjoy your videos very much I have an old home as well and have had some similar problems. Nice to see someone address theses stressful issues. Thanks for sharing :)
I like how he appreciated the signatures of the 1964 writing, I always find those types of signatures when I demo my projects. Never find gold though or cash. Found a hidden closet one time.
The extra head room was very much needed! Personally, I would have liked the box instead of the slant inside the upstairs closet as I have had that and it was nice to have a level area to store boxes or whatever inside the closet. I love watching you improve your home!!!!
One of the only channels I can sit and watch over an hour, and not skip forward once. Great content man, I’ve learned a ton from your channel over the years, thank you!
Great job for now until you can do what you truly want to do to make it as your own. You got the right idea of making the wife happy. It makes life easier for sure. Best of luck to you and keep up the good work. I can't wait to see the 3rd bedroom come together.
Lord, what a cluster ( you know) and you figured it out and fixed it! 👏. I can confirm you are Mr. Fix it. Very very outstanding I mean outstanding work!
I feel like you and I are in the same boat, although my house isn't as old (built in the early 60's). i'm doing renovation, room by room and fixing all these weird and quirky things with my house. Lots of wood paneling, uneven floors, etc.... Watching you fix your house is like watching myself. Love the videos.
The house just gets better with every video, I'm so invested. The head height is just perfect. I was skeptical when you said you were going to go back to a triangular design instead of the box but it was well worth it. I hope to see the next part of the project soon.
Love your video Matt. I love watching men fix on houses its really entertaining to see you work on the house thanks for sharing your video with me 🙋♀️💜
My man!!!! I can tell you are a tad OCD like I am, ha! I bought an old house, built in 1931, good bones but the former owner did everything half ass. I was working far from home and traffic was a mess, so I contracted the first projects, but is never the same. Now retired I am having a blast with my power tools! Also, you and I being owners makes a difference because we clean, we vacuum, we make sure is even and plum and handsome even if it will be hidden. Nothing like a homeowner to overkill and make sure our kids are safe! Is the reason why you do the "just in case" nails, ha! I had a lot of fun watching this video and uncanny how I almost knew what you were going to do and say! These are the things we do ourselves because they will never be done as well by anyone else! I already replaced the knob and tube, the water lines, even installed a sump pump, and all the wires, lines and pipes are straight, leveled and somehow in harmony with joists and studs, ha!
it looks AMAZING!!! when you cut out the extra drywall and the pieces on the floor it was so satisfying to see it all take form. amazing job!!! love your videos so much!!
Loving all that head height. Looks brilliant ! 👏 So enjoy watching all the detail you put into a small hallway and closets. Also like seeing when you change your mind and go with different framing. Thanks for bringing us along.
Nice...I think your wife came up with a great suggestion about the extra space for storage. I think it looks better this way than the original plan. A lot of work going into this project, sure will be nice when it's finished
I have to admit I'm excited for you Matt regarding the wider stair opening. Being 6'2" with broad shoulders, tight staircases like that are always annoying. Congratulations, it looks great.
The Fixer definitely has the realest projects. Living in your own home and making the project go ... mucho respecto. You take time and care and show how much there is to learn deconstructing this way in terms of building practices. Cheers!
These old houses often have some interesting things done. And you're right, if it "worked" for the lifetime of the prior ownership, then its not "wrong," but maybe not advised nowadays. :) people did the best they could with what they had.
somehow always find a way to surprise with those intros lol, the personality you put into these makes them special tbh, considering how much was going on it's obvious you're good at explaining it, as i did follow along the whole way easily (also woo to more history!)
Interesting video…..funny how all that work improved getting closets and more importantly every time you use the basement stairs that additional head space will be the bonus. Kudos👍👍👍
Very cool! We had something similar in our house here in Ireland, built in the 1940s. When going from the ground floor to the 1st floor too- so in a high traffic area! I'm 5'6" and couldn't go down the stairs or up the stairs standing up straight. Just moving the stair well hole about 6" further along the floor and starting the top about 4" higher put the ceiling angle parallel with the stairs not only looked way better, but gave most people under 6'2" enough room they didn't have to duck! Also found during our move-in, even after my adjustments, the mattress only just fit up the stairs and that's with extreme persuasion! So much so, when we sold just a couple years ago, we left the bed upstairs to be someone else's problem. We heard the new owners got a deal where you buy a new bed, they take away the old one for free... the furniture delivery guys, "had a heck of a time taking away the old bed- they had no idea how the mattress got up those stairs in the first place." haha
It’s awesome! You are The Fixer and you sir have fixed this space. I think the shelving coming off of the ply wood box will actually be a really cool design feature and look a ton better then if you opened the closet door and just saw a small wall. As always videos just keep getting better!
Much of what you did here I couldn't follow. However, I am so enamored with your talent and abilities to fix up your house. Some things sink in later. But I love watching your channel because I live learning how to do things myself. 🙃
You are good at what you do. Thanks for explaining as you go along. Great to have the skills. Enjoy watching. ☺☺ Yes, yes, I've been awaiting throughout the video waiting for you to take that slant out. Wow that was a lot of work, but its progress. 👌
It looks great. As soon as you cut all of the stuff out, I thought now it looks normal, the way it is supposed to look when you go down to the basement.
You do a great job of showing us all how to do a real renovation while living in your house. Clean up often, listen to your spouse, do it in stages with an understanding of the big picture (load bearing walls and un-level floors). You remind me of my brother, a good thing for sure.
Wife was right! Now build shelves like stairs flat plus a cubby below. I would use 2x2's as studs for the divider wall to reduce the space lost. Now I almost think that closet lined with varnished plywood would be fitting do to the house age.
Good work! So much to think about and measure and make adjustments to get the extra head room you got made it all worthwhile. Wish you were close enough to replace my front door that is not square. Door knob won' t latch so I just use the dead bolt. House was built in 1966.
Great job. There's something awesome about seeing a plan come together! The suggestion I would make was why not extend that slope into the whole stairs? Could make like a sloped draw into the closet or use that space above the whole stairs for more storage
very good work, I like long videos about the repair, I've been watching your video for a long time I learned a lot for myself. Continue in the same direction
Wow, I really enjoy watching your videos and I get tired for you, haha it feels like I'm helping along side, I'm excited to see the finish work 😄 thanks so much for sharing, see you soon 😊 everything looks great and motivational 😊
As usual you are the you you created something wonderful lot of a big mess. Walking down those stairs with laundry must have been a nightmare. I'm always excited to see what you're gonna do next..... Hugs

Same with this 52 year old woman. :)
@@shanaproctor100 haha, he could be talking in a foreign language sometimes but I still love watching it.
I love how you go little by little in every room, without making a big mess.
Yes! Clean work space, clean head!! Thanks for watching!
This House just keeps getting more and more beautiful! Great job!
Channels like this really demystify the whole process. At the end of the day it’s normally pretty basic stuff when you think about it logically.

Great video again, loved it! Thnx.
When you screwed in that last screw on the plywood, I got supreme sense of satisfaction. I can't even imagine how good that felt to you.
I love it, even though the video was listed at 1 hour long it certainly did not feel that long. Movie directors could learn from you on editing some of the movies they do. Those -RIGHT NOW- intros are awesome!
Loved watching you march up and down the stairs holding your head high with a big smile on your face!! What a relief!!

Also, these longer videos are absolutely *chef's kiss*. Definitely my favorite content from your channel!
I'm very impressed with your ability to change courses in mid stream. Love watching you work and explain.
I live in a house built in 1940. We found the original book with all the specs and where they ordered the wood. Cool find.
Great job, and I enjoy the skills you bring to your projects.
The extra head room was very much needed! Personally, I would have liked the box instead of the slant inside the upstairs closet as I have had that and it was nice to have a level area to store boxes or whatever inside the closet. I love watching you improve your home!!!!

Hmm. This video could be seen as the first part of your most recent series. I'm glad TH-cam has told me to watch it.
As a man that stands 6'4 and 320 lbs, I can imagine how great it felt to get all that space opened up. Awesomenwork!
Looking good. Please donate the Girl Scout membership card to your local Girl Scout Council. That is some amazing history.
The squared off shelf is smart. A slanted space beneath is just frustrating. Greatjob.
I'm at work right now and saw that opening scene .... laughed .... gonnna watch this later too awesome !
Lord, what a cluster ( you know) and you figured it out and fixed it! 👏. I can confirm you are Mr. Fix it. Very very outstanding I mean outstanding work!

Thanks for bringing us along.
I like how it's coming along. you are getting the best of both worlds here, head room for you and shelving/storage for your wife. Great job btw!
Ya, that mirror thing took a bit to long...LOL. You're making this house look amazing. Thank you so much for sharing your projects.
It's going to be so nice when you're finished. When you start remodeling the basement maybe you can add another bathroom and office/work shop👍
Dude, You got skills! Not only as a builder, but your videos are also awesome!
Nice...I think your wife came up with a great suggestion about the extra space for storage. I think it looks better this way than the original plan.
A lot of work going into this project, sure will be nice when it's finished
Look so much neater and safe going down those stairs.
The "re-thinking" done is usually my wife's input after I already "figured out" what I "thought" I was gonna do too. Happy wife , happy life indeed!
I was overwhelmed at first but then I got it. Great video.
Holy Toledo man...The Master at work!
My little guy Brayden started laughing again when you popped out and said “right now”…🤣🤣🤣 The little things in life…
Love how you’re remodeling your home. I look forward to your videos. You’re the best!
I have to admit I'm excited for you Matt regarding the wider stair opening. Being 6'2" with broad shoulders, tight staircases like that are always annoying. Congratulations, it looks great.
Yes, I could see that being annoying for you. This stairway drove me nuts for 5 years. Happy to have it fixed.
Thanks for showing the full experience in depth. It's so helpful to see all the little thought processes and planning in the moment.
The Fixer definitely has the realest projects. Living in your own home and making the project go ... mucho respecto. You take time and care and show how much there is to learn deconstructing this way in terms of building practices. Cheers!

This video is life!!! Love the long explained formate man!!!! I legit look fwd to ur videos every week!
Awesome idea to come off straight in the stairway
Very cool! We had something similar in our house here in Ireland, built in the 1940s. When going from the ground floor to the 1st floor too- so in a high traffic area! You are going to love that extra head room!
This is awesome. I start watching and just can't stop. Love the new head room for the stairs. Awesome and very practical.
As a 6'2 clumsy person I totally agree with what you did to the opening and I like the angle for tall items in the closet as well. Nice compromise.👍
It’s awesome! You are The Fixer and you sir have fixed this space. I think the shelving coming off of the ply wood box will actually be a really cool design feature and look a ton better then if you opened the closet door and just saw a small wall. As always videos just keep getting better!
The hour video was a treat!
Can’t wait to see everything when it’s finished!
Loving these videos I can just imagine one day I would do these types of upgrades to my very own house in the future

I was happy to see that “hill” to the basement go. Like the new hill more. Such good measuring.
I'm exhausted from watching you. What crazy but of work you had to deal with.
Oh my god!!! I've been refreshing every hr for the past 4 days for this!!! Thank u... awesome series!!!
Awesome, I keep telling you that I’m renovating a similar house. You are helping quite a bit. Thanks, please keep the videos coming! 👍😎
vintage building is what I call how you are dealing with the task at hand. so it looks correct even if it isnt
Yup. Pretty much.
I am enjoying this reno very much. I was looking forward to the final removal for your head height all the way through…🙂🙂
Big Improvement
*Way better than before*
👏🏿👍🏿👏🏿👍🏿👏🏿👍🏿
Another excellent video!! Thanks for sharing!! Always look forward to your videos. The effects and background music are on point! Great job!!
You are good at what you do. Thanks for explaining as you go along. Great to have the skills. Enjoy watching. ☺☺ Yes, yes, I've been awaiting throughout the video waiting for you to take that slant out. Wow that was a lot of work, but its progress. 👌
Boo the video ended 😭! i was excited all week waiting on that new vid notification. Another excellent bit of progress 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
The little things make you so happy 😀
The sense of accomplishment I felt when you finished, you'd think that was my house. LOL! Excellent videos. I've been enjoying your beautiful work.
That looks so much better, watching you cut out the floor was so satisfying!
For that house to be as wonky as it WAS, You are doing a heck of a job!!
It looks great. As soon as you cut all of the stuff out, I thought now it looks normal, the way it is supposed to look when you go down to the basement.
Pizza in the basement!!! 😂😂🤣
Nice modification. Always nice to have decent head room in the stairway. 👍
I’ve been subscribed for a couple of years now and I just now learned your name. Cheers!
You do a great job of showing us all how to do a real renovation while living in your house. Clean up often, listen to your spouse, do it in stages with an understanding of the big picture (load bearing walls and un-level floors). You remind me of my brother, a good thing for sure.

Good work! So much to think about and measure and make adjustments to get the extra head room you got made it all worthwhile. Wish you were close enough to replace my front door that is not square. Door knob won' t latch so I just use the dead bolt. House was built in 1966.
Looks great! If it was modern construction the builder would have let that be all dead space, you made great use of the space.
Excellent job! But I need to watch this a couple more times to get my head around exactly what you were doing! 😆
That was a great job...I'm enjoying the processing and I will continue to watch your video for great inspirational ideas.
Great solution to a sticky problem! Love it!
Those mirrors are cool.
At first I hated the change from a square opening but after seeing the slanted and then your idea for both sides I’m definitely liking it
Worth every hour
9:55 For some reason when ever I see wallpaper like that I feel nostalgic for something I've never had.
Wow, I really enjoy watching your videos and I get tired for you, haha it feels like I'm helping along side, I'm excited to see the finish work 😄 thanks so much for sharing, see you soon 😊 everything looks great and motivational 😊
This was a huge project and made such a difference!
I like it. Think you made the right choice man given the space.
Just fabulous! Keep up the great work. I can't wait to see the rest!
I like that 2x10 at a angle. I am going to have to do that. It removes that sharp angle to hit your head.
As usual you are the you you created something wonderful lot of a big mess. Walking down those stairs with laundry must have been a nightmare. I'm always excited to see what you're gonna do next..... Hugs
