As we all sit and listen, can we just pause for a moment and realise this is actually live...... I mean it sounds tighter than the polished and mastered album version. It makes me cry how beautiful this is. Simple
So true. Man I remember listening with my friends back in high school weekend after weekend and feeling like “why isn’t everyone I know digging this?” Such powerful joyful soul stirring music, and isn’t it amazing how it stirs the same souls in the same ways no matter how many years pass? To me this is where consciousness and some of life’s greatest soul awareness happens.
That is the sign of a great band. If they don't need technical help to sound good. Live lifts that mask. Genesis are masters at that (their songs are usually long - especially earlier years). How can you keep playing flawlesly a song like supers ready for over 20 minutes live? Kansas was another band that sounded great live better than the record. True professionals at their craft.
Working an unfriendly audience in true old-school vaudeville style, really: Bring them in, tell a joke, tell a story, then give a bulletproof performence. It's effective and much harder than it looks.
This video just proves that Phil Collins was the fucking shit. The Lady Lies has always been one of my favorite Genesis songs but discovering this concert and seeing it live like this just makes me appreciate how amazing Genesis was before they truly sold out.
on the song one for the vine by tony banks ....it changes key 10 times in 10 minutes....they say that wind and wuthering was genesis' most critically acclaimed album
I do believe this is the source for a popular vinyl bootleg in the early 80's . My older brother picked one up in Detroit. The bass is insane on this track. Many wicked hidden 1/32 runs. Nearly zero , body posturing with greatest of ease. I think this video is the very best performance of this song. Even with the crispy highs. Somehow bring it life. 🎸🥁🎸🎹🥁
It was around this time that I took my first girlfriend Arlene to the Genesis Concert at the Colosseum in Cincinnati Ohio. She was the best date and best Girlfriend and best friend that I ever had and we never fought either. I let her get away, she went into to the US Navy. Phil Collins, Is a Great Vocalist. Mike Rutherford played his double breasted Guitar, and Tony Banks a Genius Pianist and Chester a Great Drummer in his own Right!
I remember them playing this song on this tour. Phil was so into it, flipping the audience the middle finger with both hands to get them to boo and hiss, it was hilarious.
Yeah, if you listen to the entire gig you come to the conclusion that Phil very likely was on some kind of "upper" to provide energy (weed or any other downer will not provide this kind of awareness and zest). But Phil never seems arrogant, just full of energy and he sings and plays like there is no tomorrow in this gig (both days) with high precision. Who cares if Phil was snortin' a few lines back in the day? Almost everybody who could afford it did.
He had got divorced, so I think it's a bit of anger and not much direction in life. Hence the big beard! He mellowed on the Abacab tour - he cleaned his image by then!
I think he just had a natural exuberance at this time on stage, it’s a natural high to play in front of thousands who are putty in your hand anyways me thinks
Every concert I watch from Genesis back in the 70's always looks like Phil is stoned. He said that he did drugs back then. But even without it he has a great energy on stage. Come on we're no kids here! Almost every stage artist did a lot of either cocaine or marijuana or even alcohol to keep the energy up.
No one ever mixed incredible music with lovely stories like they did and Phil was the most charming front man ever. Saw them 8 times. They didn't play this song that night at MSG when I saw this tour so this is a treasure to me thank you.
@@joeblow2069 what? there is still "gabriel era" and "phil era" even if it was 45 years ago. the commenter didn't even say that he hated either era. who hurt you???
Man is Chester Thompson incredible! This is not an easy song to play at all and Chester was playing it basically perfectly and stayed on time. One of my favorite drummers along with Phil. Mike was just incredible during this concert as well, just listen to the bass!
Mike is one of the most under rated and under appreciated musicians in music let alone bassists. If you want a good sense of the monster player and musician he was go see The Musical Box live and sit close to the stage and watch Sebastian. You'll get a good sense of what he had to cover on stage to pull it all together. This bassline, In The Cage and Return of the Giant Hogweed were maybe 3 of his best and show his chops. But always with a brilliant musical sensibility.
I must admit I'm a fan of Peter's era and a bit critical on what happened after he left, but this performance is a true masterpiece, and I mean all together Phil's way of acting, lyrics (by Tony) and music of course. Unforgettable and deep feeling everytime I listen to/watch this.
Phil's sense of humour has always been a little self depreciating and to be fair he couldnt carry on with Peter's rather, erm, "unique" way of presenting songs on stage - so he kept some of the theatre but made it relevant to the audience and less serious. It worked brilliantly.
Legendary song. Been a blast enjoying Phil's music, and what an inspiration he is with his music and Genesis. Wishing you all the best bud. One of my favorite tracks this is, with the album. Genesis is extremely under-rated. True masterpiece. With all my heart.
questo e il disco che mi ha fatto scoprire i genesis ancora oggi ne apprendo la loro grandezza sono stati la mia gioventù grazie Phil mike Steve peter Tony
Gotta love how that interaction with the audience was unintentional training for when they'd get genuinely booed at after playing Who Dunnit? This version is incredible
The American writer Jonah Goldberg wrote that what makes the English as a people amazing is that they are . . . "weird." Genesis is 'weird', so beautiful, my favorite band ever.
I remember really enjoying this stuff back in the day. Saw this tour in Philly in June 1980. But years on Phil does come across a bit over the top. I suspect this is an example of what Phil refers to in Come Rain Or Shine when he is critical of his earlier performances as being, well, over the top. Anyway, it's all in good fun. Great memories.
Well I guess Phil's over the top cockney accent rants and havaii t-shirt are (in part) doing the exact opposite of what Peter did. Yes, it doesn't quite fit the gorgeous music - but I can't help but love Phil. And what a fantastic singer (and drummer) he is!
Christian Schonberger I love this era of Genesis, I think Phil just overflows with natural endorphins from being on stage and performing, I think it was just part of his natural stage character of the time.
Don't think fans 40 years on can expect the same energy from this show in the upcoming Last Domino tour. I'm probably just bitter as I can't afford tickets however 😉
Always liked this, the last non Gabriel lp I appreciate. But was Phil lip syncing? That was actually common back in the day and before. Good sound and video.
Pressure, he didn't want to be the frontman at first. Also, not much Luck with marriages. Then an addictive nature. All those things make for an potent poison.
As we all sit and listen, can we just pause for a moment and realise this is actually live...... I mean it sounds tighter than the polished and mastered album version. It makes me cry how beautiful this is. Simple
I saw them do this live in Cincinnati Ohio with my first girlfriend. I was only 18 or 19 years old! What a Great Band!
It is in fact a legendary gig.
Mike Rutherford's funky ass basslines are amazing! Such an underrated bassist.
@bassmanjoe Absolutely! Of course - having Chester Thompson in the rhythm section didn't hurt either :-)
He's an all-time great as bass, though he considers himself average, which is just him being humble.
If you think fast notes and pentatonic scale is amazing, too many bass players would be underrated.
@@Donjonneau spoken like a true douchebag. well done
underrated guitarist
PHIL WAS FAR MORE AWESOME THAN HE KNEW
Collins is so underrated as a frontman and as a drummer in my opinion. For me this is Genesis at their peak.
Couldn't agree more!!
I think their peak went from late 70s to late 80s
@@johndyslin798 yap. totally agree with that.

Rutherfords lick at 5:00 ist insane!
That jam at the end...damn! Tightest rhythm section ever. Rutherford shreds that bass - so underrated! He was a monster on the bass..
Joe Russell Agreed. Absolute phenomenal.
Yes. He was phenomenal bass player
He was a much better bass player than lead guitarist.
One of my favorite bass players ever. Just incredible.
Phil just taken over as lead singer and does a more professional awesome job than he knows

This video just proves that Phil Collins was the fucking shit. The Lady Lies has always been one of my favorite Genesis songs but discovering this concert and seeing it live like this just makes me appreciate how amazing Genesis was before they truly sold out.

Phil was definitely comfortable as the frontman by this point.

+Imad Basayev It looks more like he is coked out.

I should've made the sarcasm more obvious.

Yup, probably the best live period for him as a frontman. Comfortable being up front, and no mediocre pop tunes just yet.
