I was in a band in high school when Nursery Crime was brand new and beloved part of my modest vinyl collection. I know every note, and these performances are very faithful to the studio album. I still listen to that record. Tony Banks is amongst my keyboard heroes, and Genesis in my top three bands of the day, along with Jethro Tull and Gentle Giant. Then Yes, PFM, King Crimson, ELP... the prog rock era sure served up meaty brain music for the young romantic.
That moment when you realize “why am I watching this on my tablet?” and cast it to your 70” TV and sound system. Absolute bliss. Thank you to those responsible for restoring this glorious performance.
I remember looking all over for a VHS copy of this back in the 1990's. I would have never guessed back then that 30 years in the future, this could be viewed in all its restored glory... and for free no less!
im very new to genesis but im so happy my mom introduced me to them. i still have to listen to their whole discography, but from what ive heard in these live performances they're stellar💛
They where all in their early 20s when this was filmed, and had recorded the vast majority of their albums by the time they were 30. Quite an accomplishment.

i mean you won't know for another 50 years or so on the 'lasting' front so that's kind of a dumb thing to say. plenty of 22 year old are making amazing music these days. nostalgia is powerful but people still have talent and skill and creativity.
Not only is Mike fantastic with basslines that fit a song like a glove, but he can also shred if he wanted to. Just listen to The Knife off of Trespass. Mike is a huge influence on my own bass playing for good reason, and it sucks that he's so underrated.
Can't really disagree with that, but I honestly didn't think there was that much wrong with John Mayhew's drumming on Trespass. And Tony Phillips was a brilliant guitarist, but apparently plagued by stage fright.
@@lemming9984 at least they showed his solos on camera. These days whenever there is an instrumental bit, the camera usually zooms in the singer's face or on some irrelevant detail.
Thanks for working on this wonderful version. They were so lively, full of energy and musical talent. Peter already knew how to interpret a song in a dramatic way....and he was only 22 years old. They are the kings of prog!
Holy cow!! There they are!! I haven’t seen these guys since we were all much younger!! The best study of earlier Genesis I have yet to see.❤ It looks like they had only just gotten together in this incarnation. Wonderful! Thanks so much!
Excellent! I wasn't aware that these videos existed. Such a wonderful discovery for me. A great regret for me is that I missed them in concert at Newcastle City Hall in April 1975 where they played just one week after I saw Yes there. Imagine that - seeing Yes and Genesis within just a week of each other.
Yo, @G music, you total legend, you have done this performance justice, absolute masterclass in video and audio editing. Thank you, truly, from an old hippie/psych/prog rocker. God bless you, sir..🙏🙏🙏🙏👍👍👍💓💓
Very rare to have such good quality footage from that period. Intervention from editing, limited to shots of the guys, rather than the fit inducing added psychedelia that was so prevalent at the time. Great posting, thanks!
Isn't that infuriating? Just point the camera at the band! All those lingering close ups of fingers on fretboards or psychedelic clouds of colour filling the screen - these Belgian chaps (AND GIRLS) knew where it was at! Keep it simple.
The music was largely composed by the rest of the band, but Gabriel wrote some of it. The world found out when he left, what great music the band were still producing.
Thanks for your work on this version of the broadcast. I do find it interesting how they captured Steve's tapping on The Musical Box here, but on the Midnight Special performance, they move away from the guitar to his face right before it happens.
I saw Genesis in Dublin in September 1972, supporting Lindisfarne (the fox head and red dress debut). I had never heard them before but became a fan for life (Lindisfarne fell by the wayside...). You'd have to have been around then to realise just how rare music on TV was - the Whistle Test last thing at night (no good for schoolkids) was about it. Ireland's RTE actually came up with the occasional left-field gem (they showed Van Morrison at the Rainbow in 1973, unseen again until a 2016 DVD, and I recall a Bad Company gig as well). Anyway, word got around school that GENESIS were going to be on that night! It was on at a weird time, just after tea, but I had my cassette recorder microphone propped against the telly, ready to go, and I played the dickens out of that tape for years! What a thrill it was to see them again - indescribable. It was part of a short series - I remember VDGG were on the following week. In short, great to see it again in all its glory - thanks for the upload!
Amazing quality and what a treat!!! Nursery Cryme was the 2nd album I bought back in 74 and the band and that album have always been one of my favorites. But also seeing and hearing Twilight Alehouse live for the first time was a revelation! Thanks for bringing this out from the archives. What a great start to the day watching this. Brilliant. Progressive rock at it's best.
Wow! Why isn’t there stunning video of the lamb and later concerts? The quality until the 90s is pretty poor but this proves we could have some gems hidden away. Thanks.

Peter Gabriel seems delighted by Phil Collins performance. Love this music from 50 tears ago, incredible.

I loved The Gabriel Era. Peter Gabriel is still the best.
Very apparent that adding Steve and Phil to the band is what took Genesis to the next level.
... Hackett gets the least screen time on this and other films of the period. Cameramen/producers really didn't appreciate his contribution.
