I think this is Phil at his peak with the audience. He knew many still wanted Peter. Before his own solo success, he does it his own way. I think this is very charming, I have never seen it before! Cheers Adam x
Seeing Phil dressing up like the character in the song and tell the story before the song the way Peter Gabriel would is so wonderfully surprising on first watch.
You'll never get a band this good again. Musicianship, storytelling and well written songs. As much as I also love Marillion, Asia and Rush. Genesis are my favourite band ever. Gabriel or Collins.
I saw him do that. MSG. Like there's usually little irony in the world, he ended up being a champion at trying to drink himself to death. It's entirely too poetic. I saw him play live 10 times. I saw Genesis eight times, I saw No Jacket Required, and I saw Principle of Moments. He is the best drummer in the world. They're all still alive. You'd think they'd wanna at least sit down sometime and play Supper's Ready just cause they can. Even a fairly unplugged version. I guess Phil's spine still forbids him from ever playing drums like that again. It's getting back at him for doing it. But anyone could play the drums. Bill Bruford's still kicking isn't he? Gabriel always was a self-proclaimed frustrated drummer, he could play them and Phil could sing it. What else do they have to do with their time, crochet?
Yeah, but Genesis has _not_ existed 50% longer than it _has_ existed at this point. For at least 15 years, all of them have said that they're great friends and get along well together and they're open to the possibility of getting back together, and only Peter has expressed any reservations (which I think is pretentious childishness on his part, but whatever..)...... *AND IT NEVER HAPPENS.* The '07 tour was nice, but now Phil can't play, they've ditched Chester, and writing more good stuff never seems to enter their minds. It's infuriating.
@@Drchainsaw77 very frustrating, but in all fairness on their side, spending year after year playing 200 shows a year and writing tons of music, they’ve probably exhausted any desire to really spend tones of creative time doing that. I REALLY wish we would see new music and a classic lineup reunion, but then on Peter’s side, he hasn’t been a part of Genesis for almost 50 years at this point. That’s a long time to not be singing Get Em Out By Friday or “A Flower?” and have any desire to do it again. Man I really we would see it happen but I guess that’s what makes it special, lighting in a bottle?
apart from being a masterpiece//live and phil suferring the nutjobs in the foreground... my point is to all you 20 ..30 sumthins listen close coz this song represents a good example of how dangerous alcohol can be... it will ruin your life
On the one hand, very classic Genesis. On the other, this is really 2 songs that don't belong together. The sullen mood of the verse is totally wrecked by the frenetic drama of the chorus.

Love this song, it's even better live!
Seeing Phil dressing up like the character in the song and tell the story before the song the way Peter Gabriel would is so wonderfully surprising on first watch.
I should also mention that at the end as Phil is stumbling away, it kind of resembles the ATTWT album cover.
give us a flash phil!
'Are you some kinda weirdo 👀'
Always makes me cry 🥹
What a song!! Heart of the genesis feel .
This was never one of my favorite songs of theirs on the album, but I love this live version.
I was a senior in HS, I played this LP for ever it seemed. Thank you for the memories.

100% proof gorgeousness. Lightning in a bottle.
best song from their best album,
Just discovered this album this week. You can imagine how lucky I feel right now haha.
best version of this track
I’ll be back early ……or never at all. ,,,,, Love that one
Absolutely incredible
lovely
Ahh yes. The Genius of Phil.........was not to copy Peter! Lol! Nice Vid!
Saw them do this at Rockland 1978-Daryl's 1st North American tour-they had sound effects-sounded like phasers from STAR TREK!!-FANTASTIC!!!
Nice character driven song. This song does in one song what The Lamb Lies down on Broadway took fifteen songs to capture,
Great representation of music played by free rythem. phil was a master of timing and percussion
Weve all bin there...hic...
the rudeness of some of the audience is almost unbearable

Such impressive live performance! Gabriel` influence on Phil is still high here but he is very cool)
This is a good song. I can tell at the beginning of the video that Phil is a bit frustrated with the audience. They seem loud and pretty rude.
Tony and Phil do a bit of the song 'Once I had a secret love', from the film 'Calamity Jane'(Doris Day), after "Play me a song, Joe".
The song is Secret love ; I recognised it because my mother likes that song and Doris Day.
Well spotted!

Goes well with "Twilight Alehouse"

I love this song, brilliant vocals & instrumental, but this live version is awful, over acted. 🤦
Well you can't please everyone!
@@inglepropnoosegarm7801I think it is pretty good and that is just one person's opinion and that's your right but I love it....
In my opinion the studio version is okay, but live it's so much better..
This was it
