@YoushouldNeilAnblomi The infrastructure isn't even there to accompany an EV composition that is coming by the end of the decade. Now, lacking the economy of scale, it is still poor, but it is definitely there. EVs in colder climates aren't as problematic as you suspect. Norway, not exactly known for its warmth, has almost 50% electricity cars. During last winter's extreme cold, gas cars were equally problematic as EVs, and it isn't the season for road trips either. 15% of American electricity is sourced from coal - A high number, but the electricity is getting greener at a much higher pace than gas (surprise). And why are you even pretending like ethics lies close to your heart while defending the petroleum industry, which is the least ethical industry of our time next to the arms industry. People defending the industry - one behind oil spills, the wreckage of democracies, and pollution alone killing millions of people each year - don't strike me as one to boycott businesses with unclear ties to forced labour camps in China. Very picky on when their ethics kicks in. "EVs are bad because china" but also "tariffs on china?? how could you do that to our EVs"
As a car mechanic I see a lot of potential to electric cars. The mechanical systems are much more simple. No oil changes/leaks, no gas tank/leaks, no brake pad replacements, no exhaust system to deal with, very little heat, thus, expansion and contractions are limited so parts can last longer.. Im not saying they are without problems, I just see potential. Also, a guy could get off the grid with a small windmill/solar panels and stop depending on oil companies and government. I think they are kinda cool and have potential. Honestly I don't care what you drive, in some cases, combustion will be better, in others electric might be better.. just stop hating on stupid stuff!
Also with an EV, I wake up every morning with a full “tank of gas”! Total game changer! So much Big Oil FUD out here in these comments and in the media writ large…
Joe you are clearly not a modern mechanic. Electric vehicles have a cooling system, Tesla which is arguably the leader in electric vehicles calls it a "thermal management system" which consists of several components, including the radiator, coolant circulation system, air circulation system and heater. Also although electric vehicles can use the electric motor to slow down they still have a traditional electric braking system with almost exact same items as a traditional vehicle, now you could argue that the brakes will last longer on an electric vehicle but theoretically it could last longer under the exact same conditions with the same exact driving styles. Also it is fair to mention on America's number one selling electric vehicle which is the Tesla Model Y there is over 4400 batteries that are similar in size to the traditional D battery we are familiar with, they are made from lithium ion and each one of those 4400 batteries has the potential to go bad, the battery pack in which every single battery is housed comes in 4 modules, each individual battery is housed one of those four modules and will take a a technician with a multimeter and a good understanding of electricity to figure out which one is bad, if one goes bad. The reality is batteries go bad it doesn't matter how well you take care of them at some point one or more batteries will die in the battery pack and then you got to figure out as a technician is it cheaper to repair the battery pack or to replace it. It is absolutely factual to state that electric vehicles have more parts than a internal combustion engine vehicle and statistically they do not last as long before a major failure. I want to be clear i am not against electric vehicles I think for certain certain people and situations electric vehicles have benefits but I also think internal combustion engine vehicles in certain situations can be better to the individual consumer to figure out which vehicle best fits their needs. I also want to educate anyone who thinks electric vehicles are more reliable sadly they are mistaken because they are not nor are they as long lasting as an internal combustion engine vehicle which if the proper maintenance is followed and corrosion is avoided could theoretically last forever as long as wear items are obtainable. The reason why everyone is getting mad including myself about the so-called "electric vehicle revolution" is because it is unnatural it is being forced on us, if electric vehicles are actually better let them win sells in a free open market that isn't subsidized by the American taxpayer. Let electric vehicles get charged in filling stations that are privately funded, it should not be up to the American taxpayer to fund 200,000 + individual charging stations across the United States. Also consumers should be made aware of the inherent shortcomings of an electric vehicle, such a long charge times, long-term ownership battery replacement will be a must and limited infrastructure and a fairly limited amount of qualified mechanics to work on the vehicles.
@@AtomicReverend well written response. I agree that the free market should lead the way with EVs. Your right on coolant system, but it’s not used to cool moving parts, more so the battery. I see a huge potential for improvements and another alternative to conventional vehicles/gas.
What are you going to do about the batteries? Cars can have their motors swapped out, and engines and other components can be rebuilt. When the battery goes, you have a couple thousand pounds of dangerous chemicals that nobody has figured out yet how to dispose of safely or recycle. Yeah, there is "potential." Lots of ideas have "potential." Forced government implementation of those ideas almost never works. Read history. Lack of foresight, infrastructure, recycling/disposal, power grid requirements, etc.

I've been listening to Margaret's questions, but when she gets to asking about the move towards electric vehicles, she's not informed. I realize people are concerned about being able to take long trips in electric vehicles, but citizens need to be better informed. I know friends who have taken multi state trips in all electric vehicles, from Washington State, where I live, around through Oregon, California, Arizona, Colorado and back to Washington. The fact is you don't always need fast chargers, if your staying somewhere over night, you can plug into a regular 110 circuit and your car will be fully charge over night. Washington State is fully committed to building charging stations all over our state, and we per-capita have had citizens buy the highest amount of electric cars of the 50 states. We see them everywhere around here. the rest of the country needs to get on board, this is the future to combat climate change. We see the actual effect of climate change here, and if you think those tornadoes and storms across the S E, are a fluke, you aren't aware of what scientists are telling us. I currently own a Hybrid, and get 45 - 50 MPG. I hope to find an affordable electric withing the next couple years.
You hit two of the main problems for people in your comment. While your area has charging available not every place allows you to charge up overnight when traveling. They have not figured out how to have you pay for it. The other is the cost of the cars. My son travels a lot for work but it is in areas of towns built in the Poconos. He looked into electric but the cost of one was way out of his pay grade. He bought a Toyota hybrid instead and loves it.
It will take time to roll out the infrastructure. Does anybody believe the national network of gas stations popped up overnight? People used to buy 5-gallon jugs of gasoline from their pharmacist, blacksmith or hardware store, and it took over 20 years to develop a network of gas stations.
There’s a great TH-cam about Norway and the issues faced with Evs. Done openly in the hope that other countries will not make the same errors. EVs start off expensive, but price is already coming down. Charging and distance of run was a huge problem, but now Evs are able in general to run for greater distance and take less time to charge. They’re getting better and charging stations are part of the infrastructure scheme.
What's interesting, is that we may very well move towards electric vehicles, although, unless we get fusion reactors up and running, I seriously doubt it. That being said, this is the first technological "advancement" that needs the public to be "educated" on. When we moved to cell phones, we didn't need government mandates telling us we needed our landlines gone out of our houses in 5 years or pay penalties. There was a product that was better, and more useful, and people chose it. If electrical vehicles are as good as you are implying, or if they get as good or better than gas powered vehicles, we won't need the government to force us to use them.

She doesn't seem to be listening to him and she is single-mindedly focused on the now - rather than the next ten years and beyond. But those executives in the oil industry aren't thinking about the American public's future because they will have exited their jobs with their golden parachute and high paying retirement plans by then. I drive a gas-powered car and plan on doing so for the duration of my life, but I'm old - it is the younger generations who will experience these changes and the repercussions of them more than I will. The USA could have a 21st century green infrastructure, or they can argue and let other countries show them how it is done.
Pete brought no notes. This is all in his head. Smart man
No need to bring notes, he didn’t have information to give, just typical excuses.
Pete Buttigieg is amazing. I supported his run for president. He explains everything so clearly. He's a veteran. And he's been a diligent and effective Secretary of Transportation.
I like Pete Buttigeig
He likes you too if you're male.
Musk spent $500 million on Tesla Supercharger stations network nation wide. Buttigieg is clueless on what it takes to build anything. It sounds like some contractors recieved a sweetheart deal!

500,000 EV charging stations by 2030. 2 years in, we have 8. Yes, great job, Pete!
For what? Building three charging stations using 7 billion dollars? This guys clueless.
Good afternoon for You, Margaret Brennan and for everybody and God bless and protect all of You as a whole.Have a nice Sunday in the coming days for everybody.
Even vapes for example, have plastic and batteries that once the batteries go bad it goes straight into the landfill or trash. All these batteries and mining for them is terrible for the environment.
On a side note, could we bring back paper and glass since they are both way better for the environment than the plastics they forced everyone to use starting in the 90s? Thanks.
Every time Aqua chigger does a video metal detecting in rivers he usually pulls between 3-6 vapes with batteries out of the river. He also pulls a lot of cell phones and other battery powered devices out of the rivers as well.
We need to put a mandatory deposit on them, like we do with bottles and cans in some States! That will incentivize people to keep them out of ditches, waterways, etc.
@@BradleyBellwether-oy2qi Aqua Chigger is one of my heroes as I am also a detectorist and have been in some rivers myself and it is indeed terrible and all this stuff isn't going to biodegrade any time soon. Incentives to recycle might also help but it's going to be a problem in the future I think.
@@MrSmithOriginalUnfortunately, I'm pretty sure you're right about future problems. 🫤
Actually manufacturing glass, transporting it and recycling it cause more environmental damage than plastic.
@spankyssurprise1361 "Recycling" isn't the purpose and it never has been. The clear reason for bottle and can deposits given by every state that has mandated them is to keep them out of ditches, waterways and parks. Especially bottles that get broken in parks and beaches where children play.
I love Mayor Pete, and I also love Margaret Brennan's hard-hitting interview style. Great stuff!
🙌🔥🎉🌟 PETE BUTTIGIEG 🌟🎉🔥 🙌 GOD, it is so shocking and wonderful to hear a politician who can articulate ideas with facts and solutions completely and clearly....just shocking.
So refreshing to hear a coherent conversation that makes sense ❤❤❤
Note: He brought no notes.
From the Palestine train derailment, to the highway sector collapse, to the Baltimore and Galveston bridges collapse, you do not see him grandstanding. Much of what he does is work with local authorities to get the job done.
Only 7 charging stations? Those 7 are government run; many more are private sector owned and operated with governmental subsidies (just as farmers get subsidies, etc al). The US is taking its first steps in a new technology attempting to balance job creation with education. That is why unions have endorsed Biden.
Secretary Buttigieg comes on conservative and liberal media and is consistent, no shouting over, no dramatic flaying; he comes prepared.
On this Memorial Day, to Buttigieg and all veterans, we remember, and we thank you for your service. Much more needs to be done true, but we know which party has veterans' back.
I will never buy an EV.
Thank you

Your reading fake stories.
Brennan couldn't quite catch that Pete is working on developments for the future - it is not all about the present. I bet she is terrible at chess or anything that takes longer term strategic thinking.
Look at how successful Ireland is - went from one of the poorest in Western Europe to richest - and that was all because they invested in preparing to be the leader in industries of the future - pharma, tech, etc. You've got to make educated predictions on what will be happening/important in the future and where you can compete - invest smartly to lead the future. Singapore did the same... In the 1960's Singapore and Ireland were basket cases - now they are global leaders.
How can you say that? Everyday Americans are struggling right now the future may not come for many.
It is impossible to mine enough battery materials to replace ICE by 2050. There is nothing "green" about EVs. They consumer FAR MORE natural resources to mine and operate. All, to solve a lie that CO2 is the climate thermostat

Very glad to see so many positive comments below. I also agree about his logical articulation. I will always lean towards the "smartest guy in the room" and that seems particularly true in a compare and contrast environment where inarticulation, avoidance of issues (read solutions) and planning beyond the end of so many transactional noses dominate the conversation. To the short-sighted occasional comments below hopefully you will notice that change will always exist. We should just hope smart people are leading the way.

@combatepistemologist8382 and it takes 100 charging stations to replace 1 8 pump gas station. Can't imagine the cost of that infrastructure.
