    Deeply touched that you made this. Seeing all those clips together really got me emotional. I started watching the Golden Girls when I was 14 and didn't come out till I was 18 and was bullied all through school because of it. I think on some level this show helped cause it taught me to laugh at myself before anyone else could and that gays and our allies could make way better jokes about ourselves than the bullies could.

      @@StayGoldenGirls In the episode about Blanche's brother, Sophia was the really tolerant one who taught Blanche a lesson. But Sophia had a REALLY hard time with her own son cross-dressing. And that doesn't actually mean a guy is gay - and Sophia's son wasn't - he was married to a woman and had kids - but she even speculated about whether he was gay because he crossed-dressed. And Blanche had to correct HER in that episode when she used an outdated term for "gay."

I love how the Golden Girls made a point of putting the person someone was before any sort of labels, and the Good Morning Miami scene really pushes that as a kicker about how silly judging someone based on their sexual preference is; that we should judge people as people and the content of their character, not who's in their bed or how they 'look' or 'act' gay.

    It was more than likely that these episodes helped LGBTQ people get the acceptance that they have today, and that they helped bring about the day when they could legally get married. I say this because the show was so popular, and it was popular with different segments of the population. PS I know that LGBTQ people still have to struggle on different fronts, however.

    I was always fascinated by Blanche being the voice of reason in the AIDS episode. It seems on the surface that Dorothy would be the obvious choice to explain it to Rose but I really admire the choice to have Blanche say it instead. This is twice as effective given that Blanche herself is the most sexually active AND her brother is gay, meaning she isn't only speaking on her own behalf, but his as well as everyone else in the LGBTQ_+ community.

    • @StayGoldenGirls
      @StayGoldenGirls  4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I do believe that is why they made that specific choice for her to be the voice. It is the unexpected character to give this perspective, such as when Sophia says she wouldn't love her kid any less, you could expect an older generation to have a different point of view but did not.

      Thang Voung The cross-dressing trumpet player and the queenie wedding planner, were hilarious. :-) and I read awhile back that the reason that their gay cook "Coco" (played by actor Charles Levin) appeared *only* in the pilot episode, was because the writers decided that it was going to be too difficult to come up with story-lines that would include "Coco", so the writers "dropped" that character from the cast after filming the very first (pilot) episode. This is what happened in the US version of "The Golden Girls". In the *Greek* version of "The Golden Girls", however, the character "Coco" *remained* as part of the cast....Sophia and Coco shared a bedroom & slept in bunk-beds.

We wanted to spend the rest of our lives together." I told her " that's what I want also." I then told her that "everyone wants someone to grow old with at some point in life. My film teacher asked us what sitcom shows we know, most people say B99 or Disney channel stuff. He said try to think of something recent. I couldn't so I did a 180 and said "Golden Girls". My teacher was surprised I even know about the show cause "it's his parents time" kind of show

    This compilation is a great job. Those truly are he proudest moments. And Sophia’s crying scene always breaks my heart. It’s always a deep great emotional pain to make her in tears. Phil’s passing away is one and I remember another scene where Sophia’s friend is planning to kill herself to end all the diseases she’s suffering and asks Sophia to be by her side when that happens, and Sophia takes the pills away and shares her thoughts in tears...

    The Golden Girls were definitely ahead of their time! 💖 as a queer woman myself I’ve always been in love with the show and I’m glad they had scenes like these in their episodes, especially during the time period the show was still airing new episodes. It came out around the time of the AIDS epidemic where conversations like sexuality were still very taboo

    This was fantastic! I was born in '84 so I only caught the show on reruns but always liked it. I'm extremely impressed; I did research for an article I wrote on LGBTQ culture & politics in the 80's & it blew me away how it was then. One time, a teacher had to leave his job because he was gay and literally didn't show his face on TV. They talked on the news about how many gay delegates were at the 1980 DNC, and estimated future numbers like they're a novelty. And yet here are the Golden Girls, a-ok (or at least trying) instead of rejecting family & friends they were loving and understanding. That's amazing. Happy pride everyone!! 🏳️‍🌈

    Beautiful compilation of some great ideas ahead of their time.
    I wish we could be as open about all the things these women have touched on in today's society. These women showed me people are people. They come in all shapes and sizes and experiences. They can be black, white, Asian, gay, straight, disabled,, etc etc. They were all just people.
    Instead episodes are being taken out and trashed because they could trigger someone due to the sensitive nature of the subject. 😔

    The AIDS episode really hit home for me because I lost a dear family member to this back in 1991, before it was “acceptable”. Not all hospitals would treat someone with AIDS, and if they did, they were kept in separate wards. It was a horrible time to be diagnosed with this disease, not just because there were no life-saving meds like there are today, but it showed me the absolute WORST in people, with the things they would say, gossip about and how they would unfairly judge my loved one.
    So when Blanche said that AIDS wasn’t a bad person’s disease, it’s something I wish people knew back then. Maybe they would’ve been kinder and more compassionate.
    Wishing everyone peace and happiness!!! 🌻🍂✨
