Actually, it was that the men would discuss business on the veranda and the ladies would retire to the shade of an old magnolia tree to sip mint juleps and exchange prize winning pecan pie recipes. I know this because I have watched "The Golden Girls" since I was a child. When I was little, I would stay with my grandma Betty- "Grammy" as I called her- after school and she was a big fan of both "The Golden Girls" and "I Love Lucy." Now, I am a fan of those shows and watching them on Hulu makes me feel as though Grammy is still alive and sitting next to me on my living room couch. Grammy died when I was fifteen; I miss her a lot, but I'm doing okay.
My favorite Blanche line is from the episode with her sister. Her sister says, "You have a lovely home," and Blanche says, "I heard the way you said, 'lovely'." I still quote it, and now my daughter, who has never seen the show, says it, too.

Rue had that accent down pat! Along with the body language! A lovely lady now gone from us, as has Estelle and Bea. Betty White turned 97 yesterday and thankfully is still with us! But The Golden Girls has been a favorite of mine for a while now, since I never got to see it in prime time due to work, I'm thankful for this great site! It will help us "stay golden!"

I have always loved the Golden Girls and I always will. I was heartbroken when Bea Arthur died. And a few years later I found out Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty had passed too. They were all such talented actresses 😓

She is my grandmother's favorite. Incidentally, she also looks a lot like my "old south" grandmother. My favorite was always Dorothy (because I'm the librarian of the group), and my mom likes Rose. We all sit together on the sofa and watch it together often. It's really the only show that brought all three of us together :-) I'll always be thankful for that. I miss you forever, Betty. Your presence will definitely be missed.
