  • Bosch is a challenge to shoe every time I visit, he seems to throw me a curve ball at least once a year. Whether it’s an abscess or a quarter crack there’s never a dull moment for this big guy. Thanks for watching!

    One of the quickest ways to get warm in the winter is to trim a horse!
    Loved the video! I had a horse that had low/high issue going on. Horse never wanted to calmly walk, had lopsided whithers and would always eat with the low heel extended way out front. The low heel also was easily an inch bigger around. I devised a plan and had my farrier use a wedge pad to make the low side higher in the heel and reversed the pad on the high heel side to lift the toe. I also used a cinch strap tightened up on her and used a stiff bungy strap and attached it to the low side to a hobble on only that foot. This kept her from extending that leg when eating. The first time with this method, the farrier told me not to ride her for a couple weeks and only at a walk. It took about a year and both hooves matched up to what I would call normal hooves. The withers balanced out and she was a much better riding horse. In hindsight, I should have patented my idea, lol!

      Great story! Working on extreme high/low heel feet means you have to think outside the box sometimes. Nice work! Thanks for watching!

      That's a really cool solution! To change how the horse moves and uses it's body isn't as easy as teaching a human, but with the right help animals are definitely better at unlearning bad habits! I'm glad it worked and that your horse is better, thanks to your solution! And it definitely should be studied further!

    That left front is deviating forward and for what I see I think you have a false frog (periople growth over it, pulling the foot forward. Important to trim the bars, clean out the central sulcus, and map the real apex of the frog. Overtime if not adressed I think the wall will come of more than it already does. Linda Harris has quit the collection of the inner workings of the foot videos. Hope it helps

      Thanks for the feed back, it seems that I get a little different foot each time I come back to that horse. Whether it’s affected by the work load, the moisture in the ground the amount of snow we get etc. However He does struggle to retain sole thickness so I do try and leave what sole he has grown, which is probably why the frog looks overgrown. I will do a little more knifing on him next round and see what that tells me. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment.

    Great video! My gelding has nearly these exact same feet, getting a good farrier that shoes him how his feet need, has made all the difference.

    Finally I can see what ferriers are talking about. You make it very easy to see what you see and for me to understand it! I think you are the smartest, neatest ferrier I have seen on you tube thank you😊

      Thank you very much! Sharing my knowledge and view of horse feet and limbs is definitely the goal of my channel. Thanks for watching!

    The complexity of these hooves is obviously very serious, why has this treatment not started before? Surely if the joints, shoulders are affected to a ‘starting degree’ as you said, ‘the limbs will be compromised. I would have thought that prevention shd have started a long time ago. This is just a question that sprung into my mind as soon as you explained the situation. Very interesting video, I wd love to see follow ups. Thankyou.

      I will certainly keep up the videos on Bosch for as long as I work on him. Preventative care is always the goal but unfortunately it doesn’t always happen. Limb deviations to this degree happen in the womb, so it does add a level of difficulty that is tough to get ahead of. At this point all we can do is try our best to keep it from getting worse. Thanks for the comment!

    I notice the shoes don't have a front clip. I can see why the side clips are important for Bosch given his hoof issues. Do you ever use the "poly" shoes on any of the horses in your care? I subscribed as I find farrier work fascinating and each farrier brings his own style of shoeing and each horse is unique. Will be interesting to see your other horses.

      Thanks for subscribing! I have many horses on my schedule that get front clips which are traditionally known as toe clips, I’ll be posting videos of those horses soon. I have never applied poly shoes. It I do know some farriers that have. Thanks for commenting!

    What about using wedged 3D-pads to aid that low, and counteract the highly possible NPA?

      Thanks for the comment, I have run him intermittently in a wedge. I have yet to run a 3D pad on him but if I do in the future I will definitely post the results. Thanks for the idea!

    Would a heart bar shoe help with offloading that crushed heel so it can start growing down instead of forward?

    • @thewesternstatesfarrier
      @thewesternstatesfarrier  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I almost guarantee it would. Owner doesn’t want to go that far yet. I believe bar shoes in general are wildly underused. I think they’re a phenomenal therapeutic shoe for many problems. Thanks for the comment!

    I wonder if this horse's shoulders are out. That collapsed inside heel looks long to me just crushed. Has he been improving since you've been working on him? Also is there any reason you didn't trim the bar?

    • @thewesternstatesfarrier
      @thewesternstatesfarrier  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, his hoof capsule quality has improved tremendously. I will say, besides the obvious limb deviations his overall confirmation is a bit odd. So I would agree with a potential discomfort in his shoulders. The medial wall itself is long for sure but I have learned that if I drop that inside wall he’ll pop a quarter crack. I’ve had to grow it out twice after dropping that inside to much.
