The Western States Farrier
My focus for this channel is to share what knowledge I have gained so far throughout my career, in hopes it either helps current farriers and horse owners, or possibly encourage someone that is interested in the trade to take the first steps to becoming a farrier. I’ll share what tips and trick I have acquired along the way, and hopefully I’ll learn some from the audience as well. A little bit about me, I’m an AFA Certified Journeyman Farrier and absolutely love diving deep into my trade while hoping to benefit horses and help them reach their highest potential in their respective disciplines.
Hind shoe modification tips
Simple modifications to the ground surface of shoes can help control undesirable growth patterns hers is one I use frequently. Thanks for watching!

How efficient is your barefoot trim??
Most of us in this trade cut our teeth on trims, so why not learn to trim feet with speed and accuracy and save on your body and tools. Let me know what you think of this method. #asmr #farrier #horse #equestrian #horseshoeing #satisfying #transformation #horses

How to “stand up” a flat footed horse
If you’ve ever had a client ask to stand their horse up more, but said horse has very flat feet and you’re struggling to achieve that upright hoof capsule. Then this video might be for you. Depending on the growth pattern this might be the approach you need to take to achieve the correct alignment throughout the cycle. #asmr #farrier #horse #equestrian #horseshoeing #horses
White line disease resection on a horse hoof
There is a variety of reasons infections like this plague horse hooves, the tough part is finding out what those reasons are, the fun part is the hoof wall resection. This dressage pony battles white line disease in this same location on the same foot at least once a year. This void can be created in as short as 6 weeks between shoeings. #farrier #horse #asmr #equestrian #horseshoeing

How to balance horse feet without X-rays
How many times have you heard a farrier say “I don’t have X-ray vision” when addressing a horse with difficult feet to balance? Or a horse with very uneven high/low heel syndrome? Here’s a little trick using external markers to help balance both fronts without the use of X-rays. #farrier #horse #equestrian #horses

Nice work. I enjoy your easy to understand approach and delivery. Thank you. 👍
Wonderful work!!
Wonderful! What are you using?
Make a 15 min video doing that with some relaxing commentary or no commentary works too!
Nice
That’s a weird looking cow I’ve never seen a cow like that
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Was ist das für ein Tool? Eine Feile oder Raspel?
Thank you for this. This is mostly how I shoe, though fit a little fuller. I learned a few things about setting the shoe back though.

Gosh dang that mountain range
Hi your have wuorkig today
Kill pen horses from the Amish always have long feet like this. I bought a standardbred with borium tacked on his shoes. 9-10 months since his last shoeing. You did a good job! Nice rocker on those toes
Looks like a rasp maybe? Whatever it is, it does a really good job 👍
Some horses just have flatter hooves, I got a 28 year old flat footer been doing great her whole life, no shoes (I keep the heels and bars all the way down).
He needs more toe and less heel to be able to heal that inflammation?
Nice shoes!
Why did you stop?
Thanks so much for the reply. When this right hind hoof you are shoeing is viewed in the rearward horseshoers position, it is easy to spot the high medial aspect and a foot like this is very nearly to the point of developing “sheared heels”When you compare the heights of the heel bulbs, the high medial aspect is causing the outside flaring. For give me if you feel this observation is seeming like only criticism! I hope everyone is in this shoeing and information sharing simply to help our friends the horses! Bergy
That horse has more shedding problems than my dog!
Are you positive and progressive minded and open to the possibility that the totally unnatural medial lateral balance in this right hind foot is causing the abnormal flare on the outside branch?
@hooftalk1 I do believe there are a number of variables moving down the limb that change the medial/lateral balance on all feet causing distortion in the capsule throughout the shoeing interval, particularly hind feet. The way horse moves/carries themselves will influence the growth of feet as well causing excessive medial/lateral imbalances throughout the shoeing cycle resulting in a flare.
I've seen Chinese farriers using power tools to cut away the initial hoof layers before starting to use their knives. But in the US it's always the nippers. How come? I've also seen them use torch on the very hard and dry hoofs to soften them so they can easier cut into them with the knife. I don't think I've ever seen torches used by US farriers for that task. Have you ever used torch on very dry hoofs? Great content.
I use a torch frequently, I will upload a video soon showing it in use!
You sure are efficient in your work. Have watched many Farriers but you are very fast and confident in your actions. A pleasure to watch a pro work.
I need one of those for my huskies 😮
You have huskies!!!! Can you hear 😂 are your shoulders ok 😂 is your sainty still around 😂😂😂😂
Why is necessary to remove? Can't wait for mother nature to do it herself?
It’s way more comfortable for the horse it’s like a scratch being scratched
Name of the tool? 👀
A rasp from what others have mentioned
You can tell that's not the horse's first rodeo🙂
You lost me once you said match the other foot. From what I learned in vet school is that you trim each foot. We focus on superficial cosmetic appearance verses individual foot function.
When I talk about matching the feet it’s usually referencing my toe length. Each foot is an individual and needs to be addressed as such, but it is attached to the same animal that is trying to move all its limbs harmoniously together. If the length of one hoof do not match its counterpart, it’s very difficult to have a matching stride arch potentially giving the horse as appearance of being unsound at the trot.
Thank you for the comment!

You're standing behind the horse which is I guess very dangerous to be kicked in the chest or face 😢
Holy shit! I bet that butt scratch feels good too.
Nice work 👍
How much for 2 front shoes and a great rasp brushing??
I'll bet the Horse is loving it! 😊😊😊
This is why we never see Rip in the wild. They’re too busy to ever come off the ranch!
Excelente 👍
Never saw a profesional standing behind a horse
Super!
Nice job! I'm kind of a high nail guy, and wouldn't call your nails low, with the pads and all.
Thank you sir!
Is that a file?
