My father said that the training of a young horse for a farrier starts with tapping the hooves gently so that the horse gets used to handling them.

It would be helpful to properly prepare the little one for the trimming process beforehand.

Never sedated a young horse… proper prep is needed. Foot training starts day 2.

The best advice I have for assisting you in you first-time hoof- care on any animal is to let them observe another more experienced horse have their hooves tended to do they have a clue.

Sedation haters when a horse needs it and doesnt have the handling it has to be done for the horse's and humans safety. You can train whenever but sometimes hoove's health go first and it's better if they feel relaxed to not have a bad association, simple as.

As I always say... you get what you pay for. If you go cheap with your purchase (whatever it may be) you'll receive cheap! Beautiful horse too ❤️ 😍 ♥️!!!

If you went slow & reassured her during the process would sedation still be needed?

@@olsenequinecjf no hate intended just an honest question . I love that you go slow with them & place the hooves down gently

Sorry that wasn’t meant for you. Yes it could have been done without dorm gel. The point was is that the first trim is so important to gaining trust and confidence that sedation makes all of it easier. If the owner would have had her better prepared for the farrier it would have been better. They still did a good job with her it’s just one of those things that take a lot of time. We trim all of our babies without sedation. The other point is that it’s not the farriers job to do your homework. Meaning working with your horse. Sedation makes it easier on your farrier because they don’t have time to spend hours trimming one horse.

Lovely filly. I only wish you had spent more time acclimating her to the process instead of relying on sedation.

Why is she sedated? Never heard of sedating a horse to trim its hooves. Not proper training before.

I had a very good friend, he was a Vet . He told me the only person more stupid than a horse is the person who gets on it's back..
