For those that doesn't know John Thompson,He is a hardass for a good reason. His biggest pet peeve is to see good talent go to waste so when he pose the question "why aren't you in the nba" is because John Thompson's feelings are hurt to see Rider took his promising NBA career for granted!John Thompson is such a great coach he cares more about his athletes than the game itself!
That said, they don't let this type of truth fly anymore. John Thompson is flatly telling the guy it's all over, and he just isn't getting it. If you did this interview to a young guy in 2020, he'd probably go kill himself after.
He should have kept that same energy for AI... Ivo shitted on all his chances and in the interview they're buddy buddy, but with JR it's I don't believe you. That, don't sit right with me, if JT cared like he said he does he would have grilled AI about practice, arguing with coaches and complaining about minutes...
Only someone with Thompson's reputation and clout can ask those questions to a player like Rider and get open, honest answers. RIP Coach Thompson. You will be missed sir.
Fun Fact: When the tape first rolled for this interview, the first thing Coach Thompson said to JR was: "Boy, what the fuck is wrong with you". That part was obviously cut from television. Coach Thompson shares this event in his autobiography "I Came As A Shadow". RIP Coach Thompson.
Isaiah, my boy !!!!! I used to sit by your lovely mom and watch your brother baseball.....isaiah , you were special player in baseball and basketball. He should have used that same energy with his boy AI when he was skipping practice and arguing with coaches... But since they buddies he enabled him to fuck up his way out the league while he shitted on JR but whatever yall keep praising him...
@@blackwallstreet6610 that's not true bro, far from it. Allen, 6 inches shorter than Isaiah, maximized his potential 3-fold in comparison to JR, by the time they got close to being blackballed from the league. JR mostly shared the same mistakes as AI too. Without a solid father figure, longevity & discipline is hard to attain.

I think John Thompson did. a great job interviewing Ryder. He called Ryder out for all of the excuses he made how he messed up and blew a golden opportunity.
Coach thompson :) I was excited to see he interviewed iverson for obvious reasons. When john went into coach mode with him during the talk, yiu can see iverson get a warm feeling for obvious reasons. Seeing this one, im glad im just a fan
4:55 I don't trust you. I don't believe a word you just said. Thompson grills him. Awesome. It is sad Rider's career went the way it did. Credit to him: he sat there and took the heat.
this guy was a beast in college and also when he came into the nba, then he made bone head decision after bone head decision, such a waste of talent, the guy was big and strong for a 2 guard and can jump up the building.
Yah still haven't seen another player like JR Rider. He had so much potential. He was so cool and fun to watch at times when he was in college and early in MN.
Definition of an enigma. Intelligent, articulate, a ton of personality - at the same time he was an immature knucklehead who didn't come into the league young (four year college senior). I suspect a vet wouldn't have been able to influence him to do the right thing early in his career.
Shame is he got kicked out of college- HIS SENIOR YEAR! Who does that shit!wait til your 4th year to fuck up. Like you said he was one of the MANY enigmas of the mid 90s-early 00s. League is full of guys with HOF talent that coasted just being goodish and being slackass. Jr playing halfass was still better than 70% the league. So ye was frustrating as fuck to great coaches and gms like Thompson for not maxing himself and being professional
Great talent, made mistakes, wrong choices, looking for redemption, Big John went to help him, talk to him like a man, like a father and give him essentially a mock interview with a GM and Jr Rider sittin up there chewing a piece of gum the whole time.
i think he handed this interview not so well. He showed a wall of pride. If he just humbled himself in this interview , i bet you someone would have picked him up
John Thompson was 100% truth, no time or room for any if Rider's bull in this interview. It's ironic, but I went to the game in '93-'94 when JT brought his Hoyas to play UNLV and Rider lit them up in blowout win for the Rebels. For the interview, at this point in his career, Rider had been given so many opportunities. As a Laker fan, I was excited when they signed him. He'd be a force in the triangle playing alongside either Kobe or Fisher, or both of them with moving Kobe to the wing. But -- aside from a hella opening game @ Portland -- messed that up with his entire unprofessional attitude and wasn't even on active roster for the playoffs.
JR Rider was a great player who became a lost talent. His unprofessionalism and troubles escalated in Atlanta despite his most successful career run in Portland - the 1999 NBA Playoffs, but they hit rock bottom with no ability to co-exist with Shaq and Kobe in 2001 despite averaging nearly 8 points off the bench and while having the ability to play small forward or opposite Kobe in the backcourt. Lack of willingness to regularly show up in Denver sealed his career.
I know it looks like John Thompsan is givin rider alot of heat but thats an interviewers job. they want to get as much emotion out of the talent as they can. look at bob costas interviews.
Played nine seasons and only AFTER his demise he wants to give his mother the chance to come to a game?!?!?! I loved his game, but his character is questionable, unfortunately.

Monster talent. Maybe not All Star talent but borderline and could have had a nice -solid- 12 year run in the league. That entire era was the era of the primadona in the league though. Just way too much expansion in the league to where rookies could be the best players on their team and maybe making more money on the team than veterans *and* the coaches (pre-current CBA). The leauge was to blame for a lot of this. Pre-expansion even great rookies would probably come off the bench.
Well like Bob Whitsett said when JR played for Portland ..."Big game, big shot..Isaiah would take it and make it."NBA fans seemingly give Jason Kidd a pass when it comes to his transgressions.People including John Thompson RIP good man..come down hard on Rider. They both played High School ball near Oakland on the island of Alameda.Kidd had great court vision, passing ability, rebounds, and steals.Yet we should keep in mind that JR Rider was the second leader scorer in the nation at 29 ppg.JR Rider could shoot the rock better than Kidd, had a strong body, and could jump out of the gym.Yeah Rider made some mistakes, but he sounds intelligent enough to me. MJ told Rider that the league could be his one day.
