  • Aaron Pryor v Bobby Joe Young - Pryor's comeback fight Boxing
    Please excuse the quality..this is a hard fight to find in decent quality as a quick YT search will prove. I tried to upgrade the quality over the years without success.
    There's no doubt Pryor was a great fighter, there were even accusations that Leonard was ducking him. My view is that Leonard would have beaten Pryor. He was great, but not Leonard great. His battles with Dujuan Johnson ( The Ring's fight of the year runner up) and Arguello 1 and 2 are stuff of legend.
    There was a cloud hanging over him with the Panama Lewis "mixed bottle" incident in the first fight with Arguello. Lewis was a vey questionable character as subsequent incidents and revelations with Luis Resto and the glove tampering claims in the Billy Collins fight would attest to.
    We may never know if Pryor did have some "extra help" that day, but it was a super human effort. We know Arguello could punch, he caught Pryor flush a few times in the fight, but they just seemed to bounce off Pryor. I personally would like to think the fight was above board because I liked Pryor.
    This fight with Bobby Joe young saw a less than 100% Pryor after almost a two and a half year lay off with drug addiction and personal issues. He showed glimpses of the former great, but he didn't have the fitness or the legs he use to. Yes some of the old pryor moves were still there.. and he had retained at least some of the speed he had during his heyday. No spoilers with this one, I will leave you to watch it. Pryor did have a further three fights winning them all by KO. He would retire in 1990.
    There will never be another Arron Pryor,... regardless of what your opinion of him was. He was a one off.

    I'm sorry, but I don't see how any version of Pryor would've been able to challenge Leonard or Duran. Just from a stylistic standpoint, that come forward, head up style would've gotten Pryor countered from the opening bell vs Leonard. RIP Pryor.

      Pryor was a great fighter but I don't see him beating Leonard at 147, or Duran at 135, or 147. He was unique in many ways but also reckless and left himself open, something that the fighters I have mentioned would have known how to take advantage of with devasting effect.

    Why did Pryor pick such a tough opponent for a comeback fight?

    • @TBWSport
      @TBWSport  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Bobby Joe was a decent fighter but Pryor was still undefeated. He had beaten a legend in Arguello twice and as an amateur Hearns. He always believed in himself and even when he had been floored that never fazed him, he just got back up and went to work. With respect I don't think Bobby Joe Young would have Pryor worried at all.. In Pryor's mind it was just a first warm up fight of his comeback. BUT.. he had obviously overestimated his own ability or shall we say readiness for such a hard sport (rather than underestimating BJY) His timing was way off.. and possibly his punch resistance had lessened a bit too. He showed glimpses of the old Pryor but he wasn't the same.. Something was amiss (as would be expected after a battle with drug addiction) He is still regarded as one of the greatest light welterweights ever so the loss didn't harm his legacy too much. He had a few fights and wins after this loss against questionable foes so redeemed himself somewhat, but thankfully knew it was time to call it a day. There's never been any one quite like Aaron Pryor.

    • @3luckydog
      @3luckydog ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TBWSport I agree with all you said BUT still.... why go in against a hammer like Bobby Joe? One thing you can't take away from Bo by Joe is that he threw a beautiful right hand cross with KO power. Pryor was over 30, out of the game for over 2years due to drugs and going up a weight class! I think he should of had 3 or 4 tomato cans first to get the rust off, get the timing and balance back and a few more training camps before getting tested with the likes of a Bobby Joe.
