What a fight ! Both men were really world class champions, outstanding boxers. The good old times of boxing when champions and contenders were all legitimate and bona fide.
The 80's was the decade of great fighters, and great fights. This one was one of the best of that era. It has always been puzzling to me how Aaron Pryor is so undervalued when people talk about great fighters. Leonard, Hearns and Hagler get all of the praise, but to me Pryor stands right up there with them.
Wow. Definitely deserving of its rank #8 of the top 100 of all time. Amazing non-stop slugfest from beginning to end. The late stoppage was getting scary. Glad Arguello was ok. By today's standards the referee would be considered negligent, but back then the standards were different.
2 Late great fighters , i saw that fight when they fight, Alexis was great and those same bombs took Mancini out and i was pulling for Mancini. But he hit Pryor with those same bombs, what a chin from Pryor he just kept coming and firing back. With a chin like Pryor had and the way he fought, it snatches some of your heart. The way Alexis was throwing bombs and hitting on all cylinders , it comes to your mind i'm hitting this guy with everything, how do i get rid of him. 2 great men, fighting is not like that anymore.
Pryor Arguello 1 Pryor 2 Pryor 3 Pryor 4 Pryor 5 Pryor 6 Pryor 7 Pryor 8 Pryor 9 Pryor 10 Pryor 11 Arguello 12 Pryor 13 Arguello 14 X 15 X A bit one-sided to be "fight if the decade" in my opinion.
I gave Arguello at least 2 maybe 3 more rounds than you did but I watched this fight while station in fort hood Texas and it was definitely one of the great fights although I agree not the fight of the decade didn't know it was called that. We are in the 80's so I would say Duran vs Leonard 1 and Leonard vs Hearns 1 were bigger and better fights. But make no mistake probably more punches thrown if this fight than the other 2 I mentioned. When I saw it as a 23 yr old I knew I had seen a classic.

Aaron cheated how is that legitimate
Pryor was a dirty fighter...but I've seen worse
Pryor was smart to stay close to Arguello, ....you definitely don't want to get caught in Arguello's sweet spot!

God have mercy on both of their tortured and legendary souls.

Even though Pryor cheated to win this fight he was still a great fighter and champion.
