    I watch a bunch of TH-cam channels of people living in Portugal, going off grid and renovating old stone houses. All of them remove the existing cement pointing and replace it with lime mortar for inside and outside walls. And even with lime, you have to wet the area before applying the mortar so it doesn’t dry out too quickly and you shouldn’t do it on hot days at all or it will crack. I know, we should all just shut up, but we can’t. We care too much about you and your success.

    Hello, having professional knowledge, I leave you with some advice.
    You must wet the surfaces, in this case the stones, when applying the cement. This helps the cement to bond and starts the chemical process. At the end of applying the cement and when it is drying, it is necessary to wet the slab so that the curing cement acquires the required strength immediately after it solidifies. The hardening process takes place over several days while a chemical reaction takes place between cement and water, called hydration.
    If the slab is not wet, it will not cure properly, which can cause cracks due to cement shrinkage and loss of concrete strength. It is usually only necessary once or twice a day for a week, increasing to two to three times if it is very hot.
    Kaila, I also occasionally use my hands to apply the cement, but you must be careful to wash it well because the cement contains lime and can cause burns. Keep up the good work!

    • @sherry9088
      @sherry9088 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      Yes, you are missing this step! The stones need to be wet to help with the drying process not to dry too fast! Love following your journey in Portugal!!! ❤❤❤

      As for securing the timber to the mortar on top of the stone wall, I would have used 15 mm pozzi screws or 15 mm clout nails on the underside of the timber and pressed the plank down onto the mortar, this will help secure your roof during strong gale force winds. I did this to my house on the farm in Zimbabwe using 8 gauge galvanised wire and bound it down at least 4 brick levels- two feet gaps along the full length of the support beam.

    Good job.When I was taking Spanish in Mexico, there was a saying, "poco y poco." It means little by little. You will get there but you have a good place to rest and destress at the end of the day. I'm sorry about the bees. In Kentucky we sprayed the hornets, and other offending bugs, with paint to slow them down the put them in plastic bottle, with a lid on it, so they couldn't lay eggs and/or breed.

    I have read or seen, (and now I cannot find the links), that chickens and bee's have a good relationship and happily share space. As you see,the Asiaticas hover outside the hive,and the chickens snap them out of mid-air, removing the wasp problem.
    Google a bit on chickens and bee's relationships, hopefully it can be an organic solution ? A chicken enclosure around the hives,not too bad or hard a job ...hoping for a best outcome 😊🙏

      I lower the number of wasps I deal with on the porch by setting a trap: smear cat food on a board or tile (not a roof tile) and place over a bowl of water with a few drops of soap. Leave a gap for entry. Water should be high but not touching. Lure should be thinly spread; mousse style clings best. Refresh every day until you are less bothered. Honey bees won't go in because they aren't carnivorous.

    I was watching a you tube where they hunt these hornets nest and destroy them. I wish I would have saved the link. Maybe you can locate someone knowledgeable of some one find there nest and destroy them.

    Well done to the two of you, great achievement 👍. It’s 26 here in Maldon uk it’s too hot for me, and I’m just sitting watching you lol🥵. How did you continue at 40 ? 😳

      They have now acclimated to this country. Where you think 26 is hot, in Portugal it isn’t. Amazing how we adapt.

    Google ‘Asian hornets around my beehives’ and you’ll find natural hornet/wasp deterrents (citronella, eucalyptus, peppermint) that won’t harm your bees. Those poor bees! The hornets decapitate them, strip off their wings and also their legs and leave them to die. You HAVE TO do something!!

    About the asiaticas: you need to call the municipality. They will destroy the asiaticas nest.

    It looks like your bees have evolved defensive behaviour against the Asian hornets in the same way mine did. The Asian hornets can only pick out single bees, so what the bees on the parapet are doing is making one big mass of bees which the returning bees dive straight for and join so they can’t be singled out so easily.

    • @quintadovalepermaculture
      @quintadovalepermaculture 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Also, the Asian hornets take the bees to lay their eggs in, not to eat. It’s a source of protein for the developing larvae.

      @@THESCOTTERS there was a nearby nest which the bombeiros came and annihilated, and the hive did really well for 4 years. But the Asian hornets eventually did for them last Autumn. This year a small late swarm turned up in July and are occupying one of the empty hives. A friend who’s a beekeeper is going to put them in one of his catching boxes so they have a better change of surviving in a smaller hive - easier to keep warm over winter. We’ll see … The Asian hornets are a big problem. Haven’t seen any down here yet this year but no doubt they’re about.

    I know you are sick of people questioning you, but I have 1 more. Why no ring beam? Every other stone house rebuild I have seen has one. I've seen this in France, Ireland, Portugal, Spain , and Italy.

    • @warrenshalm550
      @warrenshalm550 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      True. The project has been designed by an engineer though. I'm thinking it is because these stones are enormous and span the full 60 cm of the wall. The houses with ring beams all seem to have smaller stones and are three layers thick.

    • @lfuentes4098

      I think also a ring beam adds height and acts as a level place to add the lumber for the roof. This is a guess. 😊
