I was thinking the same. I'm probably bias because I do Shotokan and this is my favourite kata but I don't think this one looks as good. He performed so good though.
This is Shitoryu Bassai Dai. This guy was world champion, he didn't get there by performing kata incorrectly. This Kata varies according to style, but it was the same as this in both Renbukan and Shukokai which are Shitoryu styles, I have studied both. I see a lot of power and style in this performance.
A rare sight. Finally someone who makes the moves in such a way that one would suppose that he thought closer of what they are for. That is actually what Kata should be for - but you rarely see it in tournaments.
Did it, Bassai Dai on green belt and got 1st place in my local tournament. Is maybe for blue or brown belt but dont forget is your sensei who decides if u re ready to get that knowledge.
slightly different style / discipline from what I have learned ,, but well executed ,, good posture , power etc ,, on the downside ,, you have just made me look crap , thanks for that young man , :-) , but I will just keep practicing until my heart stops beating or unable to move , Karate is from the cradle to the grave :-)
I thought It was a very well performed kata! Each style of karate has slightly different variations in their katas. This is different to the one I know but the pattern is very similar. Regardless Antonio was awesome! Explosive and controlled I would like to learn that version. People who rubbish other peoples disciplines are missing the whole point of martial arts and will always be lacking the spiritual side to Art.
Let's pray for those who dislike this amazing performance. They must be in a very dark moment in life. Let us pray for those poor, all hating, maga hat wearing individuals..... 😔
2011EllieB It is Shito-Ryu, and he is not a orange belt, he is a black belt... Actually he is the WKF world champion since 2010... Hehe so please, don't worry ;)
Oh you mean shuto uke and neko ashi dashi, of course he did it, look at 0:47 and at 1:00 because it's BASSAI DAI. If you take a look at the official shito kai video of bassai dai, in the description you will see the name of the kata, that's bassai dai.
It must be epic coming up with some dance moves , saying they are hundreds of years old, and contain hidden applications. Then having paying students where you go around moving their elbows or hands an inch and then having tournaments to judge who did the dance the best.
@KARATEbyJesse Nice!!
Nowdays is a little bit different, I'm 1st Dan Black Belt and before the order of belts was Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Brown, Black, today there is a lot more belts with different stripes but after Red comes Green than Blue, than Purple, Brown, Brown-Black and than black
@kaiftw you're right, in a street fight it makes no difference. but when performing bassai dai it does. i've been training for 45 years and lived for 32 in Japan. Trust me, you MUST move and land heel first when performing bassai dai. this is fundamental with shito ryu and goju ryu, but not shotokan. as bassai dai is shito ryu's "shite# kata it must be done the shito ryu way, which is heel first.
i'm currently learning bassai dai and i'm a brown belt, this style isn't shotokan is it? because i'm getting confused as he is only an orange belt (9th kyu) and learning that kata? what style is this?
Wow wow wow we're all karateka no matter what style weather it's shotokan shito ryu Okinawan kobodo and so on it doesn't matter we all pretty much do the same move just in a different way
I’m not sure about the second last move in basadai shito ryu but aren’t both your hands supposed to face down or one up one down? Very amazing kata I strive to be like that. Amazing sharpness and timing
@xxbabybubbaxx that was not a terrible kata. it was also not the shotokan version of bassai dai. the way he performs some of the techniques is simply because he's doing a shitei kata (a list of katas the WKF has categorized for competition). if he wants to win, he has to perform the kata the way the judges want to see it done in a tournament. there are more karate styles out there than shotokan.
Since he is using the Neko-Ashi dachi it is NOT Shotokan. Seems to me to be some variation of Shito Ryu. I would have thought Itosu Kai but he is not wearing the Itosu Patch.
one month is not enough. In order to learn it you must practice at least 30 times every day during three months at least. Set apart difficult movements which you need to practice in isolation.
Excellent performance! :D Come on guys be respectful to other styles and techniques. A true Karateka must be respective to others and accept them. Again, Antonio is great at katas keep it up!;)
@2011EllieB it's shito ryu. He is not an orange belt. It is the WKF. They use red and blue belts. What you are seeing is his WKF red belt. Look up other WKF videos and you will find the same thing.
Bassai dai doesn't mean "battering ram" - the "dai" just means "big" as opposed to "sho", which means "small", so there is a "bassai sho" sitting around in some kata curriculums. The typical translation, "To Storm a Fortress" seems in-line with "battering ram", but honestly, I don't know how we get that out of the kanji, batsu (抜) - "to extract or remove"; sai (塞) - "close, shut, or cover".
I like the kata and his movements are crisp... As for all of the bashing.... In my opinion is very disrespectful to all martial artists whether you have been studying for years or days.... Movements may be taught differently from dojo to dojo, style and lineage, not to mention the Sensei's interpretation of the kata. There is no wrong move in martial arts, just not the way a certain style may perform the technique. As for the sandan and mandated time frame.... The experience you gain from being
I have to wade in.... sorry. Great kata.. on a Shito ryu style I am 2nd Dan Shotokan.. I prefer traditional karate now.. before that I did Shukokai.. a sport version based on Shito ryu.. and Judo. Each style has it's difference. For those who can't comprehend, it's just different, look at Heian Shodan and then Pinan Nidan. Now look at Heian Nidan and Pinan Shodan... Get it... differences based of what the teachers found important at their time of teaching.. even changing the importance of which kata to teach first. I am not sure I will like Olympic karate.. when the jump in Unsu will be all about the height and not the break.. but I will appreciate it all the same.
also prefer the shotokan version. Being that quick is not that hard if you skip all strike outs at all and do such short techniques instead. do not say anything about the effectiveness of such 'mini techniques' ;)
Hmmm have to say I prefer the shotokan version. This one is very fast and flashy but seems to lack the powerful moves this kata is known for. Bassai dai means "battering ram", it's suppose to be slow and purposeful
amazing style ...amazing M. Diaz ....I come from shotokan style, When I see a performance like that.....I want to change for the shitoryu style hahaha .
@kaiftw you're absolutely wrong. bassai dai is a shite kata and therefore, in competition it can only be performed one way. and stepping and landing heel first is mandatory. if this guy was just performing technique it would not matter as many styles and teachers teach waza differently and understandably their students do as they are taught, but when performing a "shite" kata in competition, there is only one way that it can be performed. this is the reason "shite" kata exist.
This is the Shito Ryu version, yes? It's fascinating to see how it differs from the Shotokan version.
Yes it is! This kata is beautiful!
Yes, also different from Shuri-Ryu's version- much more snappy and less graceful and flexible.
I was thinking the same. I'm probably bias because I do Shotokan and this is my favourite kata but I don't think this one looks as good. He performed so good though.
so different from wado ryu too!
Yes our shotokan version is quite different from this I was wondering tq
This is Shitoryu Bassai Dai. This guy was world champion, he didn't get there by performing kata incorrectly. This Kata varies according to style, but it was the same as this in both Renbukan and Shukokai which are Shitoryu styles, I have studied both.
I see a lot of power and style in this performance.
Greg Curtis-Flynn were do you live bro
Brisbane Australia
I did not know you could see power
Quite so, but, unfortunately doesn't help too much if one studies shotokan.
A rare sight. Finally someone who makes the moves in such a way that one would suppose that he thought closer of what they are for. That is actually what Kata should be for - but you rarely see it in tournaments.
The movements are so graceful... one does Kata because its beautiful to do it
Much respect. Awesome speed and sharpness. Not my style so I shouldn't judge, but except for the yama zuki everything looked top-notch.
What a beauty and executed KATA. makes my eyes shine, damm.
bro, he's so fast i can't even see him move!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great performance. The speed alone was amazing. Well done
This is just one of the many versions of Bassai that I’ve learned. I would love to have his kimi.
The thing that I liked best about his kata is that his body was static when it needed to be.
Everyone has a different style have respect for each one and stop talking shit
its the best bassi ive seen , ours is not as punchy , awesome , nice karate
I loved his version, it does come from Shito-Ryu, but it is awesome
Thank you Antonio Diaz (silent bow)

Did it, Bassai Dai on green belt and got 1st place in my local tournament.

WOW! His cat stance is on point!
Its not SHOTOKAN. But awsome.
Yea shotokan sucks
very nice. crisp movement.
very good Kara in shitoryu style
ohhh mannn, he is really really fast, he is fantastic.. very very very very good

Orgullo venezolano!!!
this is not the shotokan karate.. this is more like slaping flys.. however.. respect for the speed !
+Defbeat Killa This isn't shotokan, this is shitoryu. That's why the kata is different. :)
Let's pray for those who dislike this amazing performance. They must be in a very dark moment in life. Let us pray for those poor, all hating, maga hat wearing individuals..... 😔

excellent performance
he is awesome keep it up
very good kata.... muy buena kata se avento el chicoO.!
I don't listen to what critics say. I don't know anybody that needs a critic to know what art is.
Please make some videos in which you are fighting a practical duel using traditional karate techniques
Oh you mean shuto uke and neko ashi dashi, of course he did it, look at 0:47 and at 1:00 because it's BASSAI DAI.
If you take a look at the official shito kai video of bassai dai, in the description you will see the name of the kata, that's bassai dai.
I love the form. What is the intention of the GI slapping?
to let you know by the sound your technique was correctly executed in each movement... Hope this help!
Incredible
Tang Soo Do version is a little different. But definitely nice performance.🙏
incredible!
Fantastic
Awesome!!

I learnt it at blue, its learnt at different grades in different styles
Just because you have an opinion, it doesn't mean that you have to have to be rude and call people names
@kaiftw you're right, in a street fight it makes no difference. but when performing bassai dai it does. i've been training for 45 years and lived for 32 in Japan. 2 times World Champion, Champion of the World Games, Pan American Champion 11 times.
Wow wow wow we're all karateka no matter what style weather it's shotokan shito ryu
Okinawan kobodo and so on it doesn't matter we all pretty much do the same move just in a different way
It´s not the way what matters, but the spirit you show while you are doing kata.
um dos melhores
hurmmm...maybe its different ....but still awesome ...
I’m not sure about the second last move in basadai shito ryu but aren’t both your hands supposed to face down or one up one down? Very amazing kata I strive to be like that. Amazing sharpness and timing
this kata is difficult i test it every day!
AMAZING..!! I'M A MIX MARTIAL ARTIST... KARATE BLACK BELT.. N' URE AMAZING DUDE...!! CONGRATS..!!!

Seems to me to be some variation of Shito Ryu. I would have thought Itosu Kai but he is not wearing the Itosu Patch.
Its Shito-Ryu

I have to learn Bassai Dai for the Blue Belt , in one month xD... Man ! I have to learn it

one month is not enough. In order to learn it you must practice at least 30 times every day during three months at least. Set apart difficult movements which you need to practice in isolation.
i am sure you will do great. just have fun preforming the Bassai Dai!
Wow his punches make so much sound how come is it his clothes or speed

Excellent performance! :D Come on guys be respectful to other styles and techniques. A true Karateka must be respective to others and accept them. Again, Antonio is great at katas keep it up!;)
What style of Karate is This?
Non Shtokan, for sure.
But is a good style, i like it.
@2011EllieB it's shito ryu. He is not an orange belt. It is the WKF. They use red and blue belts. What you are seeing is his WKF red belt. Look up other WKF videos and you will find the same thing.
what tournament is this jesse?
awsome
looks like a shito-ryu version of bassai dai.
Nice .
Maybe you think only fast....no kime, but he's the kata world champion!
@KARATEbyJesse Is really only for kata?
muito bacana

Travis Cottreau To extract or remove from a closed, covered, or protected place. A fortress is a protected place. Makes sense to me.
Shotokan is the only way to do the kata, right?
@Martin Turner I think he was being sarcastic
I like the kata and his movements are crisp... As for all of the bashing.... In my opinion is very disrespectful to all martial artists whether you have been studying for years or days.... You are completely right. This form is "choreogrphy karatekish"
@eamonob84 i see now. thank you for clearing that up!
Hmmm have to say I prefer the shotokan version. This one is very fast and flashy but seems to lack the powerful moves this kata is known for. Bassai dai means "battering ram", it's suppose to be slow and purposeful
Good dancing
De qué estilo es este Bassai Dai ? No hay nada como la versión Shotokan
Yeah, sure.
Thank you for replay^^
Oss.
amazing style ...amazing M. Diaz ....I come from shotokan style, When I see a performance like that.....I want to change for the shitoryu style hahaha .
Shotokan's Styles is Better more powerful
I was wondering the same while watching. This is not the Bassai Dai I know, maybe it's a diferent form from other karate style or something.
