The 2023 Mercedes EQS SUV Review | Is This The Ultimate 3-Row EV?

  • With nearly 300 miles of real world range and 5 to 7 seats, the EQS SUV is the ultimate luxury family hauler. If you can afford the price that is. Starting at $104,000 the SUV *is* less than a Tesla Model X, but it's not quite the same formula as that 3-row EV. The Merc is far more focused on traditional luxury values and attainable range.

    Alex, as usual, you have done a superior job on this review. Your knowledge and judgement are excellent. The review is, as usual, very detailed. A debatable point: Your assertion that this vehicle's only comparable competitor is the Tesla Model X. I understand your reluctance to admit the Rivian R1S based on price, since it is not well above $100K. However, sometimes--in my view--it may be worth comparing vehicles across significant differences in price to expose significant value differences. I do, however, appreciate your bringing in the R1S (as well as the Volvo EX90) to illustrate the limitations of the EQS. I look forward to your full review of the R1S, when you are able to do so. Thanks for an excellent review. And by the way, I very much appreciate the setting of your reviews. Your property is quite beautiful.

    When you put the optional high efficiency AC filter there nothing else will fit. Since you have a 450 model without it, it would have been cool if you taken a close vid of the front motor mounting area, I don't think anyone has done that yet. Thanke for getting the fast charging comment right. Peak charging is only a part of the story, the charging curve is what matters the most when you're charging up on the go.

    My concern is the 12v battery since we all know that is the pre-requisite to start any EV (unless something changed recently). Specifically, the 12v dying or needing to be jump started. Who at MB suddenly decided that their reliability ratings went through the roof? Clearly someone at MB is detached from reality. 12v die from time to time. Who the hell thought it was a good idea to override common sense revolving around the 12v battery being inside a service-only front hood?
    At that point, just put it in the rear. It's worse when the battery starts to sulfate but at least the people who buy this will at least be able to access the 12v battery without much fuss if it was in the rear. The people who buy this EQS SUV are usually going to have ANOTHER car. In other words, they're not always going to drive this EQS SUV 480+ or be chauffeured in them.
    All of this reminds me of the half-assed EV solution the EQB and EQC are. MB really didn't try that hard with the lack of a frunk, 12v battery location, and the interior space efficiency.

    • @ALMX5DP
      @ALMX5DP ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Is it so hard to open the hood? Seems fairly easy once you know where the pull tab is.

    • @Tokamak3.1415
      @Tokamak3.1415 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ALMX5DP It voids the warranty supposedly. You would have to start a right to repair lawsuit to win against a dealership. Having said that, not many people buying Mercedes vehicles ever pop the hood let alone know what battery sulfation is.

    • @ALMX5DP
      @ALMX5DP ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Tokamak3.1415 where have you heard opening the hood voids any type of warranty? And I’m not sure what sulfation has to do with this, for all we know the 12v battery is lithium ion as well.

    • @FuncleChuck
      @FuncleChuck ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Standard Merc lessees don’t open the hood ever. Fluids, tire pressure, all that - they take it in for service.
      Second owners will hate this car.

    • @Tokamak3.1415
      @Tokamak3.1415 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ALMX5DP Sarah nTuned, Autoline, Autfueghl and other reviewers have reported as such. That's why they spent the money to route the washing fluid to the side and add a user service door - that adds extra cost. When you pop the hood it says no user serviceable parts. Just like a power supply for a PC or the magnetron for a microwave. You can fight it but it will be another Louis Rossman kind of deal.
      There's no point from an automakers perspective to have a lithium 12V considering the cost and the expectation they will only change zero to one lead battery during the initial warranty - the 12V is a sacrificial load carrier for transient demands and to connect and disconnect the contactors for the high voltage pack. The newer AGM batteries work for the vehicles with high electronic loads compared to a sealed VRLA or flooded.
      EDIT: Just saw your SCCA videos. Nice. I used to AutoX before kids and marriage. We're a different breed of animal. It's why most people under 30 couldn't drive off in a 65 Stang even if you gave them one for free. The Mercedes owners around me don't even look at the rear view camera when they back up - I'm pretty sure they're not going to ever consider popping the hood.

When I get home and plug in my car every day, I don't want to have to walk all the way around the car every single time, and no, I'm not going to back into my driveway every single time either. At least they didn't put the charger in the lower rear bumper like on other MBs though....

Went straight to the Mercedes dealership ND DROVE THE EQS was impressed with the ride and comfort, interior wa amazing. Outside not my fave, like a head turner car, but am considering it. I wish the subscription services mercedes offered is more talked about. Acceleration boost is cool, except its like 1200 a year and you have to keep paying for it unlike tesla acceleration boosts. Also you need to pay to fully unlock the rear steering angle on fully loaded models (yearly subscription) as well as a subscription for the "AR navigation system" (again monthly fee).
    I get subscriptions for HD Mapped highway driving systems like super cruise, blue cruise etc. But for physical hardware that shouldn't be software locked (I forgive acceleration boost from tesla because it can cause more wear on the electric motors and completely changes the internal software tuning on an already very fast vehicle) But I just hope the mainstream buyer of these vehicles don't entertain mercedes on this trash Idea that we need to not only pay crazy money for a car but also continue to pay a monthly fee to use features we already paid for in the MSRP of the vehicle

Actually IIHS just crash tested a truck with heavy load in the bed, and it absolutely destroyed the passenger compartment.
