      The phone access is very likely deliberately awkward, because it is illegal even to touch your phone whilst driving, in a number of European countries. But you might still be able to operate the phone hands-free legally in some of those lands.
      That awkward positioning has at least two benefits: If the phone is hard to access, then you'll be less tempted to touch it. And if pulled over by the police they cannot accuse you of using your phone in-hand when you were driving.
      It's also illegal over here to be 'in control of the car' without holding the steering wheel. This raises some questions about the legality of having Full Self Driving enabled, when it becomes available, because technically you'd still be in charge of the vehicle, even if it could be fully autonomous.

    So my take on all three cars from someone who just recently rented an EQS 450 + this past weekend for our wedding. I had the car for five days. I’ve also rented a model S and a lucid air. The lucid air is was by far the coolest looking on the outside of the three however, the Mercedes had a nicer interior, but the interface is very clumbersome. Apple CarPlay didn’t always load. I had to go deep into the menu to the phone settings to get it to reconnect to Apple CarPlay automatically. That said, if I had to choose the lucid air, Tesla model S or the EQS lineup I would definitely go Mercedes.

    We are fortunate to have both the model S and EQS 580. My wife feels Tesla has a luxury price and very little luxury. At a minimum, it is missing massage seats, ambient lighting, no heads-up display, and Apple CarPlay. EQS is very long, but it’s turning radius is similar to a model 3. While mS is faster and slightly longer range, EQS is quick enough and when driving 65 mph or less, we’ve received 459 mi range in sport mode.

S55 AMG, SL500 , transmission failure at 26k mi on the SL , repeated oil leaks on AMG before 30k mi. and they could never get the "kompressor" dialed in right either. The quality was so bad that I would never consider Mercedes again . Long gone are the 'bullet proof" series of 450SEL 6.9.
      We are currently on Tesla # 4, (Model Y) after two S and one 3. Each of them were better quality than the two most recent Mercedes I owned. I will say though that you have to open your eyes before you accept delivery. I did have to reject a Y for poor build quality and paint damage.

Its 10 months old has been in the garage 6 times, once for a whole week, has had 3 parcel shelves, needs a forth and still has 3 outstanidng issues which wouldnt be there is it was better designed and built. Panel gaps are pathetic and the paint quality is laughable. Lastly, my car was €58000 now Tesla say its worth €25000 as a trade in.If it was better made and you had a proper customer expereince then I wouldnt want to get rid of it. However, the whole expereince is disappointing and very frustrating.

    The biggest issues I have I have with my tesla/m3lr is the built and ride quality.
    Very quick, almost as quick as my m5 up to 80, but I don’t bother above 80 because of the poor ride quality.
    There are also a lot of things I like, even more than my other cars. It’s weirdly flat on hard corners or curves, but little feedback on the braking point). I didn’t bother with the m3p because of the terrible ride on average American roads. It’s almost as tight as the m5 or the 992s.
    It definitely got me very curious about what BMW, Porsche, Lexus and Range Rover will bring with combinations of ev, performance, ergonomic, and comfort.
    Another $3-4k on ride quality, noise reduction and safety features (alerts on the side mirrors?) would have made it near luxury and having me not missing the others like the EQx’s, 4/5i’s, Mx’s … whenever I want to enjoy my ride.
    It has become a tool car.

    Looks are objective but not getting under the hood is suspicious. How's that going to work under the "right of repair" thing coming down the road? I suspect the Benz service, after the free window, is really gonna stick it to ya, as per usual. Not being able to pop the hood means you are at their mercy for the next 20 years. Not a fan of those interior screens and excessive knobs either. I do like the 360 view (come on Tesla, you have the video feeds, it's just a question of creating the software and sending an OTA) and the HUD but that's about it. I like the kickass aspect of the Plaid plus the charging experience, FSD and OTAs of Tesla.

    • @evlife108
      @evlife108 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, Tesla still has a lot of room to improve mostly body quality, but the running gear is now rock solid and extremely efficient. Granted, they don't spend money on developing the perfect massage seats. Their money does no go into adding fake grill designs or sound generators that mimic ice car sounds like the EQS does. Nor are they adding useless, repulsive components like an ON/OFF button to an EV.
      Tesla is too technologically advanced to use crude pouch cell battery packs that don't last and are often a nightmare to remove (see Taycan for example). Instead, their money goes into developing innovative drive train and battery technologies like the 2170 or 4680 cells. Their packs can be swapped in under an hour

    I am surprised that multiple low mileage EQS 450 models are for sale here at $68-75k. That’s a one-year depreciation of up to $37k!!!
    I drove one and it felt like a flying carpet. Lethargic, compared to my Model S, but fast enough and super quiet. The range is impressive!
    The lack of frunk and the mini storage below the trunk really limit what you can store. On the sunny day of my test drive, I could not see the rear camera due to the sunlight hitting the screen - it is just angled too flat. I didn’t care for the screen graphics with their artificial horizons - to me, that’s like Windows 95 or so.
    Overall a good EV for people who don’t want a Tesla and prioritize ride comfort and interior luxury.

      The interior quality is the achilles heel of the Model S , actually that can be said for all Tesla vehicles. I get that there is much to love about Tesla vehicles but wish they could up the interior quality and fabrics. Like some of those features in the EQS should definitely be in the Model S, I.e massaging seats, side view mirror blindspot indicator, HUD, ambient lighting, rear wheel steering (tighter turning radius) and last but not least is a suspension that rides like the EQS but can be changed via options to ride when you want a sport car feel. It would be even better if we as the driver can mix and match ride quality options vs it being a predetermined setup.

    It’s interesting how brand bias creates subjective opinions. People who say the Merc is nicer can’t really explain or quantify how. What exactly makes the material in the seat of a Merc better than the material used to make a Tesla seat. Subconsciously your brain will automatically bias a Merc because of the brand name. Little to most people know Merc uses suppliers like every legacy automaker. They are not a verticality integrated company so a lot of the parts they source to build a vehicle are also used by other manufacturers. They do not have a 54 inch screen in the vehicle. They have four separate smaller screens behind a large pain of polycarbonate that creates illusion of having a 54 inch screen. The software is clunky and not really intuitive. The best software doesn’t require flipping through a bunch of menus to get to a feature. With Tesla software you can simply press the button on the steering wheel, issue a command and you’re done. Sure the Merc has a soft ride, but handling is sacrificed as you have thicker rubber and softer shocks. I have owned two Mercedes including a true AMG. they are nice cars, but they don’t really change all that much. Their EV’s look like they are designed for the elderly. They are not exciting nor exceptional. They under perform the market when it’s supposed to be Mercedes Benz or nothing. The vehicle is a disappointment by luxury standards. I could by three of them but they are no longer worth the money. I’m excited to get in my Tesla because it’s fun and engaging to drive. I passed on this version of the plaid as I am waiting for more paint options and a possible light refresh coming. IMO the Merc is a waste of money.

      "designed for the elderly "- you nailed it! Not one true innovative idea on this car - instead, you get your intelligence insulted by an ON/OFF button.

      I am quite elderly, I love my EQS 580 including its styling and I know one hell of a lot about EVs. I have driven top of the marque luxury cars of various makes for at least 20 years, and I also know luxury. Tesla is not luxury. Top of the marque Mercedes vehicles, including the EQS, are luxury. My car goes 0-60 in 3.7 seconds. Anything faster than that as well as "tight" steering and "firm" suspension are games for children that you will eventually outgrow.

  • @evlife108
    @evlife108 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    lets call out why this car does not have a frunk: it is not because of a hepa filter. It is because Mercedes, like most european manufacturers, uses off the shelf components instead of investing in developing model specific designs. Munro has talked about this in length. Due to their random shapes, these components have to be scattered all over the car instead of fitting neatly. If you do this, you may save development cost but lots of space is wasted and weight added with longer hoses and cables.

      Frankly I have no idea why one needs a Frunk. I have a 2023 AMG EQS and the trunk space is enormous - much more than I would ever need. Ryan here complained about having another door to open for the wiper fluid, yet also complains when the "frunk" does not open. To me, after driving a Tesla Model S for 3 years and now driving the Mercedes, I see no need at all for a Frunk and would rather have a much better looking, comfortable and luxurious car inside and out then the Tesla which is much too spartan and uncomfortable for my tastes.

    Soon as you said it's competing with the model s plaid and lucid suddenly it completely dropped off the map. It's range and performance is closer to the model 3. Compared to that I could see why people would want it and how it could be competitive. But the s. Especially the plaid, blows this out of the water in performance and range. The lucid has it beat for luxury in my opinion AND performance objectively. It's not really competitive in that sector to me other than the fact that it's a Mercedes and the clout that comes with having that name.

    The EQS is perhaps the hottest luxury EV sports car. It boasts the unique features of front and back wheel turning, fast acceleration, and high power. The dashboard design is a fantasy look, and the roof is simply stunning. However, there are a few oddities, like a door for wiper fluid and a closed front hood. While the front styling is appealing, the side and back styling leave something to be desired. The biggest drawback, though, is the whopping price that is out of range to the average Joe. There needs to be a middle ground or am i the only 1 that thinks too much or too little isn't a good option for both vehicles. Other than that the EQS is impressive with the interior quality, ride quality and turning radius for such a large sedan. I get that the Model S is a beast when you compare performance and range but it's seems lacking in all the luxury and even some software features that Tesla doesn't seem to want to add for some reason. HUD, front camera park assist, side mirror blind spot indicator ( i know tesla has blindspot displayed on UI screen) 360 camera etc.. if Model S added these features and luxury it would make it a absolute no brainer if your willing to buy a luxury sedan in that price range.
