My grandparents were from Huntington, my grandfather dreamed of being a Marshall when he was a child and his older sister did go to Marshall, college ended up not being in the cards for him as he joined the navy to serve during the Korean War, he was a Marshall fan to the day he died and he always had a spiritual connection to the school, when the accident happened to the football team he was heart broken…. Years later he went to the movies to see this movie, it was the only movie I ever saw him actually go to a theatre to see…. He cried. He bought the movie when it came to dvd but once was enough for him, he just kept the movie as a keepsake, he would cry at the mere mention of the accident or this movie… it was his favorite movie for years…. He loved Marshall university!
I can’t imagine losing a whole team and staff! The AD is a tough enough job when you have all the moving parts, but to be faced with this, monumental achievement!
To me this was the part of the movie I lost all the buttons on my shirt I love the way he stood in the pouring rain Everything national championship Marshall won is because he said want to play football
After the plane crash, after Marshall had decided not to end the football program, the NCAA automatically granted us the ability to play Freshman on our "Varsity" squad.
I'm from a small town about 40 mins north of Huntington and live in Huntington now one of the 5 they couldn't recover is from my town Alan Skeens #59 Ravenswood Red Devil
I loved this movie, but am I the only one that noticed that the President of Marshall drove from Kansas City to West Virginia, and he’s still rain soaked from the night before?
Look closer: his suit is dry, his shoes don't leave any water in his steps, and the squishing is just slight. He drove back straight back from Kansas City, so he was dry except for inside his shoes, which he never took off and never had a chance to dry. The scene was done well!
This is one of the moments that I wonder how much was changed for dramatic effect or is this how it happened? I mean specifically waiting outside the office of the NCAA in Kansas City in the rain part.
I'm convinced the only way Marshall was able to beat Notre Dame Chad Pennington came out of retirement so did Randy Moss and Matthew McConaughey was coaching
The NCAA automatically granted the team to play freshmen on the varsity team in the real story. The university didn’t have to beg the NCAA for approval like what you saw right here. The scene right here is NOT true. But still a great movie.
2:24 I'm sure that the football director whoever didn't randomly and unannounced show up at their rival's doorstep in the pouring rain and just happened to run into that college's program coordinator JUST he was leaving, that's melodramatic but gosh it makes for a great scene, great acting by David strathirn, Great directing by McG
It's actually the theme to "the Good, the Bad and the Ugly." This movie came out long before Mockingjay was even a concept, and its referencing a much older time.
Uh what? That's the whistle tone from the Western "The Good, The Bad and the Ugly" an Iconic music note that is associated with Clint Eastwood and the Western Gunslinger. How old are you again?
That second, quiet, needful “Please” did me in. One of my favorite movie scenes ever.

This is one of the best scenes in one of my favorite films. I HIGHLY recommend this movie to anyone who hasn’t seen it.

He wasn't the AD he died too!

“Now I’m willing to bet you didn’t propose over the phone, and I’m damn sure she didn’t say yes in a letter.”
Even though it didn't happen this way- this is still one of my favorites!!!
The best scene in a movie ever.
"There's a first time for everything"

I love this scene & David Strathairn"s part
One of the finest character actors of his generation

Sorry as a uk non football fan what does this mean? Is this like younger people allowed to play on the team?
Yes. It means college students in their first year of college could play. @@RhysTheBeast22
Matthew did an amazing job creating his own football coach character
I saw this as a kid, and now if I really need something, I ask in person. No phone call, no email.
This was part of the movie you laughed and cried at the same time.
"... And I know damn well that she didn't say 'Yes' in
.. a Letter."
These days, she says "Yes" on Facebook
I truly believe that the 70's...maybe the early 80's... were the last days of the Gunslingers.

coaches are motivators as much as anything
And as a result of this very sad accident, Freshmen were now allowed to play at QB. Great movie IMO, but so sad.
This isn’t the exact way it happened but I still love this scene
how did it happend?
What really happened
well however it happened the thundering herd kept moving
Apparently if you go to fat Patty's down town Huntington you can see a replica of the rejection and acceptance letter
“We want to play football.”
I know dam well she didn’t say yes in a letter !
Magnificent!
Back when college football was really college football.....with RULES . No NIL, no money grubbing.
Thos movie was so good
Never give up!👍🏽
this is what Klaes Ashford was like before he was a Belter pirate
You can hear his wet shoes squishing as he walks.
I have a question any one
After the crash
Did the basketball team still play
Yes, the movie its based on true story
He talks like Mary Joe Buttafuco the whole movie.
You must be old to remember that crazy woman...?
I loved this movie, but am I the only one that noticed that the President of Marshall drove from Kansas City to West Virginia, and he’s still rain soaked from the night before?
And the letter is crisp & dry. 😊
Yeah I was like how tf is he still wet, shoes squishing and all 🤣

Kansas City to Huntington is a 10+ drive today, and that's with interstate highways the whole way, which probably weren't all there in 1970.
He was a noted convertible enthusiast. One of the downsides of the car

chills
I'm not exactly a fan of Matthew McConaughey, but I do like him in this movie
I still can’t watch any part of this movie with a dry eye.
jesus chris thats marshal football
What if he really did propose in the phone and she did say yes in letter😂 Story ends.
So he was still wet after traveling from KC to WV?
It's raining in Kansas City again right now
Acted like WVU and Marshall were rivals back then. They were not and did not play each other.
0:25 “Shit”. A modern PG movie.
why is Mathew not the President of America
He would be the best looking one ! John Kennedy and Bill Clinton weren't ugly by any means but Mathew is gorgeous !
Is Marshall the only reason freshman athletes ever got to play varsity sports in NCAA?
How exactly did it happen?
The NCAA automatically granted the team to play freshmen on the varsity team in the real story. The university didn’t have to beg the NCAA for approval like what you saw right here. The scene right here is NOT true. But still a great movie.

Jesus Christ it's Jason Bourne!

He went there and was soaking wet when he got back..🤦🏼
He was mostly dry by the looks of that. Just damp and squelchy shoes. Perfectly reasonable in a 10hr car drive.

cant stand how he talks out the side of his mouth all movie
He's doing it to try to create a semi-accurate accent.
Who are you talking about
Accent? The guy was from northern Ohio, not down south.
Akron, Ohio to be exact!!!...
Matthew McConaughey was imitating how Lengyl actually spoke.
