- The dusty desert of Lucin, Utah, isn't for everyone. It's lonely, windy and hot. But for Ivo Zdarsky, it's home. The inventor, who in 1984 escaped Czechoslovakia in a homemade aircraft, lives in an airplane hangar about 25 miles from his nearest neighbor. Like we said, Lucin isn't for everyone.

So, an aviator about the same age as me right now built a plane from scratch, flew it across the border early in the morning, landed in a busy airport with the high risk of an malfunction, authorities spotting, and shooting him, and now he lives happily in the middle of nowhere. Remarkable guy.

Wow I did not know he was so famous. You couldn't tell by how he dresses, but he is actual a millionaire. Our school cop tells us how he assists with the search and rescue every time he is in town. Ivo saved the life of a hunter last winter (2016)that was caught in the middle of a real bad snow storm. No trucks could get through the snow. Ivo spotted the tip of the hunters rifle sticking out of the snow. The hunter suffer extreme frost bight but he lived thanks to Ivo.

I’m from the same part of the world originally and also escaped from behind the iron curtain, a bit further to the East, more ‘enemy territory’ to overcome, not as glamorous as his escape but in many ways way more dramatic.

There was an East German who did the same,but landed in West Germany.I'm inclined to believe his feat was a bit more dangerous,since you know....East Germany....People from my country sometimes tried to swim across the Danube into Yogoslavia.Some made it,some drowned,some got shot.

What a character ,I really like this guy,I also escaped from a communist regime ( Cuba) in a home made raft,it took me and my two older brothers,eleven days before we where rescued by an American coast guard vessel,That was back in August of 92, i was eighteen years of age.🙂
