      They are always calm all across Australia. Thats why we use Mayday mayday mayday or pan pan pan. instead of stupid declaring an emergency. It gets the message across clearly to all who may be within earshot of the atc radio. Hugely important. Fire and Rescue crews and airside officers etc would hear yhe mayday or pan pan and be given a few extra seconds to react and prepare. As well as flight crews ramp crews etc. I dont understand why americans refuse to use ICAO?

    I do not understand that strange "decalare emergency". There are standards that SHOULD be used:
    MAYDAY (x 3)
    PAN-PAN (x 3)
    This was a clear PAN-PAN.
    They did go around and noted that some issue was with flight control, then just do a PAN-PAN directly. Everybody then knows that there is an issue and some extra care is needed but no immediate danger.

    • @Steve211Ucdhihifvshi
      @Steve211Ucdhihifvshi 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly, its because either they refuse to do it, are entirely ignorant or just plain stupid.
      Any airman that travels abroad surely has the intelligence to even briefly brush up on standard international aviation english. But hey thats merricah. Cant be taught.

    • @maximinix
      @maximinix 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is also something that I find strange on this channel. Why are professional pilots so reluctant to use these standards? Because 'Mayday (3x)' or 'Pan-Pan (3x)' not only tells ATC there is something going on, but also everyone else on the frequency, who is then informed to keep the frequency as free as possible.

    • @AnotherDoug
      @AnotherDoug 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the ATC twice referred to it as a MAYDAY (2:23 "copy the MAYDAY" and 5:04 "MAYDAY acknowledged"). So even if the pilot wouldn't say it, the ATC certainly knew it was.

    I'm not a pilot or have any knowledge. So does that mean that their flaps didn't work so they had to keep higher speed to prevent a stall? Is that the reason why they needed the whole runway?

    • @EdOeuna
      @EdOeuna 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They’re either stuck or won’t extend past a certain point, so the approach speed will be higher, hence they ask for the full runway.

    • @Hartbreak1
      @Hartbreak1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Most probably the flaps didn’t deploy fully so they had to approach at a higher speed in order not to stall the plane. The MD-11 already has a high landing speed compared to other aircraft at full flaps so I’m not surprised they needed the full runway to stop in such a situation.

    • @intelfx86
      @intelfx86 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pretty much, yeah.

    • @arkiefyler
      @arkiefyler 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Normally ATC expects aircraft to exit the runway at the first acceptable/appropriate taxiway. Asking for the full length is mainly to let tower know you won't be clearing where you normally would. This alerts tower to NOT to clear another arrival as close as normal; this helps avoid making following traffic do go-arounds. Additionally, a high speed landing can really heat up the brakes. The crew is preparing the tower to expect a slower taxi even after they are safely on the ground and still on the runway. 👍 Overheated brakes can start tire fires. 👎

    • @schm1035
      @schm1035 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RealMrCane You are almost correct. Max brakes can be used any time at the pilot's discretion when deemed necessary. The difference is that max braking is indeed hard on the brakes and the deceleration is very strong, so it makes for an unpleasant ride. Nevertheless they can be used without restriction whenever it's advantageous. In this case they are coming in at higher than normal approach speed, which will greatly increase the landing distance. Also the MD-11 tends to float a lot more during the flare when partial or no flaps are used. So by requesting the entire length of the runway, it allows them to possibly not have to use max braking.
