A light when on in my head when Dr. Butler said that the Sidhe realm and the mundane world are coterminal and coexistent. Suddenly puzzling traditions make sense; like women not sewing during Samhain in case one of the Sidhe was pricked and doors being left open so none would be trapped in a house.

Take notice of old traditional architecture for homes. A lot of the designs have a direct path from the front door to the back door. There's a common belief that this design was specifically to help avoid Sidhe from getting lost in a house and getting stuck - thereby causing endless mischief. If they did enter through one door, it was a direct path to the other door and could get out quickly with minimal damage along the way 😅

I had totally forgotten about the Puca in "Darby O'Gill" 😂 I definitely recommend the movie "Harvey" with Jimmy Stewart. I think it's a delightfully mischievous representation of Puca / Pooka, and the movie itself is top notch. If you like "Darby O'Gill" you'll love "Harvey." I once saw a horror movie that was about Puca, but to me it felt like a twist off a poltergeist, not true to Puca mythos.
Thank you so much for this episode! Definitely very thought provoking with new and interesting perspectives.

Dr Angela, I found out about your work from your previous interview of Dr. Butler, who I thought was essentially unique in her study. In the 1950 film with James Stuart ( Elwood P. Down) a former Wall Street Broker turned happy go lucky drunk returns to his home town in a screw ball comedy called "Harvey" Harvey is his mystical friend who later reveals himself to be a Puca in the form of a 6 foot rabbit and is his drinking buddy. The story revolves around their friendship and how upsetting it is to his two spinster sisters. Your local library probably has it if you need a good laugh sometime.

Wonderful movie! but I would've described it differently. They show that Elwood has more than the occasional drink, but he doesn't exactly exhibit the behavior of a drunk, even a happy -go-lucky one :) But it was definitely my first thought of Puca in the media.

Many legends of the fae here in Cape Breton; both Irish and Scots traditions. The Mik Mak as well have legends of the little people (overhead an elder talking about them as well as forest 'giants') on an ecumenical outing to the 'faerie hole'; a cave in the north (that is sacred to he Mik Mak).

    8:50 cue Bauhaus...
The tame, diminutive, winged female representation of faeries predates Disney by several decades. The image had gained considerable traction in the Victorian Era; several were featured in the edition of Thomas Keightly's *The Fairy Mythology* on which I cut my teeth in the early 'eighties.

    • @JennyButler
      @JennyButler 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Yes, it does but what I was referring to here was the Disneyfication of the (Victorian story) of Peter Pan and the cultural force of this... it's what many people would associate in imagery when they hear the word "fairy".

@@drangelapuca Your reply is correct, ..
but at 2am when I first started to watch this video. I left my comment as I begin to watch this video. My original comment was going to be ..
" Two women start to talk about fairies and break out laughing like pre teen girls, typically to be expected."
After nearly a dozen attempts of typos I gave up on trying to type that out.
My sister being three years younger than me would .. play .. summon fairies for tea parties and break out in laughter for a good part of a hour with her imaginary friends, and the dog chasing after night shadows. And everyone could hear a few birds in her bed room at night when the lights were off, but when you turn the lights on, no birds any where.
When I turn fifth teen and first started studying Wicca, my sister was twelve and her friends between the ages of eight to third teen spent a week writing up a .. spell scroll .. to summon fairies to a circle for a tea party with honey & jam with home made biscuits. Three quarts way through their group spell chant they broke out in manic laughter for better part of half a days. And the family cat was chasing after imaginary birds in the house, with the dogs trying to catch .. something .. before it run under the house furniture. My mom's second husband comment on what was happening was, ..
" Looks like she wasn't play summoning fairies for the past seven years after all !"
Since my mom is a bipolar narcissist, she was B*tch Jealous ! Her mother was Scot/Turkish and in grade school during the Great Depression living on a
USA Pennsylvania farm. " Listen, until you let go of your Ego and light up, little girl house fairies won't show up for you, and you haven't been a child for years. So grow up and start talking to garden fairies and start acting as an adult and tend to the plants around your house."
My mom always fought against her anger and animal nature leaving her bitter in life. I embrace mine to find a bit of inner peace. My grandmom separated herself from nature and fairy folk the last ten years of her life, leaving a bit bitter and empty. Once you start to play with magik & fairies and stop there is a price to be paid.
If you lose your laughter, you lose contact with the young house garden fairies and that leaves your life emptier. Worst part is, if you spend your starting years with one foot in Fairy, or what ever you want to call the divide, you never really adjust to living around .. humans.
So once you start laughing, keep giggling, laughing, and loving.
It is the strongest magik there is.
Also from my many pass experience dealing with fairy gardens I have had made and from other people's garden. A proper made garden feel like you are walking through a spider web every few feet cause of the energy that flows through the location.
