tonmasterboy not every platformer is a metroidvania, but they've become incredibly popular in recent years. they're defined by the mechanic of progressing through locked areas by obtaining items and new features, generally with big sprawling levels that require backtracking and solving puzzles to progress. quackshot was definitely an early metroid clone, and it's awesome. but there's lots of platformers that aren't like metroid at all, cuphead, meat boy, 20xx, etc.
Wow I just realize that Quackshot is consider to be "Metroidvania" until someone said it because its true. That's why I love explorative plaformers as a kid & still do now. But I despise it called Metroidvania.
I absolutely loved Quackshot and still do. This, Castle of Illusion and World of Illusion were brilliant in every way. Devs really need to remake Quackshot. I'd love that. I love all the music in Quackshot but my favourites are South Pole, Boss Theme, Transylvania and the Final Boss theme.
i was a small kid when i was playing it… the ghosts, the moving walls and the chilling soundtrack was so frightning man… it even gives me a chill today, but in a good way haha
@@303Smilezzz As a fan of the Genesis I disagree on facts. The Super Nintendo's sound was a lot clearer and had more range. Though a lot had that echoey sound it did a lot that the Genesis couldn't. You can do a comparison on games that were on both systems. Super Street Fighter 2 is very noticeably bad sounding on Genesis.
@@Kingdom_Heart Here are some facts on the specs of each chip. "The Mega Drive's Yamaha YM7101 VDP has a fast DMA controller that can stream CD-quality 44 kHz sound samples directly from the ROM cartridge, treating it like a large extended RAM. The Mega Drive can then play those samples through the Yamaha YM2612 sound chip's PCM sampling channel which is capable of 52 kHz audio output. The SNES can't stream from the cartridge because of its slow DMA controller, so it needs to copy heavily compressed PCM samples from the ROM cartridge to fit into its limited 64 KB RAM space. The SNES then plays those samples through its Sony SPC sound chip, which has a limited 32 kHz audio output. ...That's how the Mega Drive is capable of playing CD-quality samples, which the SNES is incapable of doing. In addition to being capable of higher-quality sampling, the Mega Drive is also capable of FM synthesis, which the SNES is also incapable of. The Mega Drive is also capable of deeper and clearer bass, whereas the SNES bass sounds limited and muffled. "
@303Smilezzz Well see, the Mega Drive was capable of things the SNES couldn't do. The thing is that developers never took advantage of these specs. To say that the MD had the best sound is implying that the sound of the MD was actually taken advantage of, which most of the time it wasn't. A lot of games had bad quality sound unless they were console exclusives that were built from the ground up for the system. But they would've done better had they taken the SNES route to get certain instruments to sound like those instruments. It would've made certain games more emersive.
Spectacular soundtrack. There are some real crazy ones here. Room 2 is a total mind-fuck. The Transylvania is a classic. Room 1 and Hideout are also great.

@@crazydog6093 Indeed. Of course, it didn't hurt that Dracula was a really cool boss, too. Even though the popcorn shot absolutely trivialized him... Maui Mallard also had some top-notch music, with The Realm of The Dead (appropriately enough, given the Transylvania track in Quackshot) being in the top 3 tracks from that game as far as I'm concerned. Though, once again, and even though I was a few years older when I first played Maui Mallard compared to when I first played Quackshot, the world itself still unnerved me as all get-out...
