Anyone who has been around animals for any length of time has faced your loss and fully sympathizes with the pain you feel. I grew up with dogs and, as an adult raised trained and showed them. As an older adult, I finally got involved with horses (I was that little girl who always wanted one but we lived in the city and my parents could never afford them.). These animals we raise and train are part of our family when we are as caring as you and your family are. Please know that you are all in my prayers. Give Oliver some extra love. Oliver and Colt were like the modern day horsey equivalent of Mutt and Jeff, Penn and Teller or Statler and Waldorf Muppets... One bigger than the other but despite their antics, both always standing-Tall Together. Colt will Never be forgotten and Always loved. ⚪️💕 😢 🙏🏻

Vets wouldn't have done anything different. I am amazed that he can do all that, I couldn't have done it. Haters definetly have no space here. One only has to watch Oliver to see what an amazing, beautiful and loving family we have here. They need our support and kind words and the haters need to back off to their own sad little world

At most there could be 1 or 2 trolls. I sincerely doubt there will be anything more, if there is even that. I think the fact that they were so open and transparent will dispell any concerns that they hadn't done enough. I feel so badly for them. And especially for Oliver! He's going to need at least 1 other friend. I wonder who it will be. Because horses need to be with other horses. It's very unhealthy for them to be alone, even more so than cats, dogs, or people. RIP our funny sweet little friend.
It was very thoughtful of you to take the time and explain what happened instead of doing what most people would do and that's just post a message that Colt had passed due to colic. I would have been ok with that because I know the love and care your entire family puts into each animal on your farm. I'm sorry Colt is gone. Very sad indeed. So sorry for your loss. You (and your family) are very knowledgeable regarding bloat and did the most you could. Health problems arise in animals that sometimes can't be fixed. You gave him a good life. Thanks for sharing because the idea that trouble and tragedy never happen is a lie. If anyone has kept animals for any length of time they know this. I know this from keeping dogs and cats. Having a funeral is good - a time and place to honor the life lost, and will be missed, and to go forward.
Those little ponies are a bit prone to colic. Poor you guys and Oliver. You did everything you could. He had a very fun life, and he bought your whole family a lot of happiness and helped Oliver so much. He bought us so much happiness too because you shared him with TH-cam viewers like me. I am so heartbroken for you. Colt was one of our favourite. That is such a nightmare and can really happen to anyone. It always seems to happen at weekends or when a vet can't be reached. I am truly blessed to have at least 10 vets 24/7 that can be with me within 20 mins here in Germany. I respect you that you did everything correct and tried so hard. I've owned horses for over three decades and I'm so impressed with your ability to treat him yourself. I totally think being cast for awhile would lead to colicking, but also if he was colicking and rolling that might be why he was cast. This video is hard to watch in spots, but I'm really grateful you shared it. I recently lost my horse as well, and he colicked too but he had tumors. Ultimately there was nothing anyone could do. He had a nosebleed from the tubing for mineral oil. I'm amazed you could tube this little guy and do it so well. I'm so sorry he didn't make it.
I was going to say same, that he probably colicked and got a torsion. I was looking for him to show colic symptoms like hitching alternate hind feet and looking around at his belly after JR helped him up, but he didn't at that time. But he seemed off somehow. You could chalk it up to being a bit off kilter from being cast though. I am sorry for your loss as well. My sister's excellent pony died of "colic" as well, and I suspect he had tumors that finally blocked his digestive tract too fully. When he got older he'd colic from time to time, then it got more often. He'd also had a squamous cell carcinoma removed several years before (amputation of last 4 inches of his penis) so he had a bit of history. This spring the Camp pony I've known for 16 years randomly colicked and couldn't be saved. She was 24 but in good health . . .until she wasn't. I HATE colic. Sometimes it's just a bellyache but other times it's a death sentence, and one never knows. There is nothing like that helpless feeling and sense of impending doom when you realize you are about to lose that special friend. My condolences to the Homestead Family. Colt was some kind of special. I hope Oliver handles it okay. Anyone who might have some judgment just hasn't been through colic. Thankfully not seeing any hate here in the comments. Thanks for sharing the bad with the good. It HURTS. My heart hurts for you all.

Sorry to hear of the loss of Colt. Such is life on the farm. I remember losing a prized dairy cow and her calf due to birthing complications. That was a huge loss for my father, but unexpected things happen, and there is nothing further that you or anyone could do.

I am glad to see not one negative comment, and have read a lot of them. Everyone I've seen has been shocked but understanding of the cruel quirks of horse ownership and truly consoling in their comments, which is so nice to read as we all process the loss of Colt. At most there could be 1 or 2 trolls. I sincerely doubt there will be anything more, if there is even that. I think the fact that they were so open and transparent will dispell any concerns that they hadn't done enough.
I feel so badly for them. And especially for Oliver! He's going to need at least 1 other friend. I wonder who it will be. Because horses need to be with other horses. It's very unhealthy for them to be alone, even more so than cats, dogs, or people. RIP our funny sweet little friend.
It was very thoughtful of you to take the time and explain what happened instead of doing what most people would do and that's just post a message that Colt had passed due to colic. So sorry for your loss. You (and your family) are very knowledgeable regarding bloat and did the most you could. Health problems arise in animals that sometimes can't be fixed. You gave him a good life. Thanks for sharing because the idea that trouble and tragedy never happen is a lie. If anyone has kept animals for any length of time they know this. I know this from keeping dogs and cats. Having a funeral is good - a time and place to honor the life lost, and will be missed, and to go forward.

I've owned horses for over three decades and I'm so impressed with your ability to treat him yourself. I totally think being cast for awhile would lead to colicking, but also if he was colicking and rolling that might be why he was cast. This video is hard to watch in spots, but I'm really grateful you shared it. I recently lost my horse as well, and he colicked too but he had tumors. Ultimately there was nothing anyone could do. He had a nosebleed from the tubing for mineral oil. I'm amazed you could tube this little guy and do it so well. I'm so sorry he didn't make it.
I was going to say same, that he probably colicked and got a torsion. I was looking for him to show colic symptoms like hitching alternate hind feet and looking around at his belly after JR helped him up, but he didn't at that time. But he seemed off somehow. You could chalk it up to being a bit off kilter from being cast though.
I am sorry for your loss as well. My sister's excellent pony died of "colic" as well, and I suspect he had tumors that finally blocked his digestive tract too fully. When he got older he'd colic from time to time, then it got more often. He'd also had a squamous cell carcinoma removed several years before (amputation of last 4 inches of his penis) so he had a bit of history.
This spring the Camp pony I've known for 16 years randomly colicked and couldn't be saved. She was 24 but in good health . . .until she wasn't. I HATE colic. Sometimes it's just a bellyache but other times it's a death sentence, and one never knows. There is nothing like that helpless feeling and sense of impending doom when you realize you are about to lose that special friend.
My condolences to the Homestead Family. Colt was some kind of special. I hope Oliver handles it okay. Anyone who might have some judgment just hasn't been through colic. Thankfully not seeing any hate here in the comments. Thanks for sharing the bad with the good. It HURTS. My heart hurts for you all.

I am glad to see not one negative comment, and have read a lot of them. Everyone I've seen has been shocked but understanding of the cruel quirks of horse ownership and truly consoling in their comments, which is so nice to read as we all process the loss of Colt. It's nice to see there are still so many kind people out there. HH has enough grief to deal with without anyone being obnoxious in the comments. The love and support seen here is truly wonderful.
