I'm laughing about the LR comments. In 76 I served an apprenticeship in a rural village garage. We had so much work as a result of how poor these things were. I learnt to weld replacing rotted out rear crossmembers on 5 year old series 2a's. As my life progressed in the motor trade I had so many customers who were brand faithful to LR who had horrendous experiences. Fractured diff casings on Discoveries, huge MOT repairs on Range Rovers then the new models all with horror stories with poor engineering but great styling! I spent a lot of time in Kenya where 4wd vehicles have to work. They're all Toyota's. Nuff said ha ha!
Excellent video James - you put so much effort into preparing your cars, they are a total credit and respect to you! As for the Land Rover with the new engine, their only option is to keep it and run it into the ground, they will never be able to “recover” any of the expenses by trading it in.
They say that 90% of original LandRovers ever built are still on the road. The other 10% made it home....... Gives a whole new meaning to "suit enthusiast", eh?

My Freelander. 2.2 sd4 is the best car I have ever owned - probably because LR didnt make the engine and I'm one of those strange people who 'over service' their vehichles
I feel sorry for anyone stuck with a Discovery Sport or Evoque diesel, I have a late model Freelander 2 with the fantastic 2.2 diesel (PSA /Ford engine) I would have considered changing it for a DS but fortunately have done plenty of reading about their issues and now won't consider one at any price, they really are a ticking time bomb.
I swapped my FL2 at 14 years old and 140,000 miles for a 3 year old Discovery Sport. TBF I loved the car, great design, really comfortable and smooth to drive. After three years of ownership, I sold it and have now found I may have had a lucky escape, having spotted the comments on TH-cam. Oil dilution, timing chains etc. A real shame as my experience was great and it is a genuinely nice car.
I bought a TopDon 1200 well over a year ago after seeing you use it. I bought the small one as my bike had a random power drain and never had to charge it for almost a year. One morningbmy mate found he'd left the interior of his 6.5 ltr Cummins diesel Dodge Ram and the little TopDon 1200 got it going first time! Awesome bits of kit.
I got a 1200 too. Great for starting my Corsa, but even better for charging torches and running LED lights during a few days without power last weekend. It could have charged my phone too if we'd had a signal!
No car engine is without risk of fault but I don't understand why modern engineers tuck service parts deep in the engine or why they forget simple things like rubber belts don't like oil. In theory we should be getting better and better at design and engineering, and in most cases we are, yet car makers buck this trend. Is it profiteering or are they really just challenged?
Your right and if you think back to cars of 15+ years ago you expected at least 150K miles from an engine and sometimes much more. How can it be "green" to produce self destructing cars?
Because they're now designed with emissions and efficiency at the very forefront. They're fantastic when new and cover thoses briefs very well but, that comes at the expense of more systems to go wrong and long term reliability isn't there. As long as it makes it through the 3 year warranty period, JLR don't care after that.
