    this is sad to see what happened to him. I played against him in the playoffs in 2010. We pulled off a huge upset against kenton that no one thought possible because of him. In college I also had a chance to play with two of his favorite receiver targets at UC. they both had high praise for the man. It's awesome to see that his story has continued in an amazing after putting up the cleats for the last time

    Not many adults handle that many tough circumstances and setbacks (some obviously self-created) w/o cracking. The fact that he kept getting back up and back at it over and over tells you a lot about him and his family. Not surprised he ended up in a solid spot with a productive life.

Others, with the same or different skin color, will each have different circumstances, but in the end the key factor for all of them will still be how they choose to respond to those circumstances, not the skin color of any of them.

      agree - but if you can't block out high expectations in high school, how are you going to do it in the NFL? The process of testing players - physically, mentally, emotionally, and character-ly, WORKS. Some guys aren't going to be NFL-ready until they are 25 or 26, and if they flip out after not being drafted at age 22, then a flaw is exposed. If they have great stats but bad arms or feet, the scouts figure that out very fast. Etc.

    • @BoomerKeith1
      @BoomerKeith1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's a big reason why a lot of "good" high school players disappear in college. Especially at top tier programs. In high school they're used to being the best player (or one of the best) on their team to being just another player on their college team. It takes dedication, motivation and determination to excel at the college level and that's where a lot of guys fall short.

I can remember being in the yard by myself with a transistor radio on listening to games with Steve Pisarkawics QB, Mel Gray, and James Wilder. Dennis Franchione was my high school coach, so there’s some irony. I once started a high school game for Fran and Payne Stewart was the opposing QB. Small world. #MIZ

      Think about how many high schools there are in the entire country, dumbass. Mauk still holds the national record for career passing yards, attempts, completions, and total yardage, which have still yet to be broken. 317th in the entire country at QB is pretty damned good, considering most offensive HS stars are either WRs or RBs. Assuming Mauk would be ranked 1st in the nation is fairly brainless when such a ranking includes all positions on the field.

    Despite his downfall. WOW! what a ride he had and he earned it. From record-setting High School QB to lead and play in 2 SEC title games is off-the-charts for any QB. Just getting a D1 scholarship is "Winning"...my daughter plays collegiate volleyball. Of the 500,000 High School volleyball players nationally, only .08% get a free ride in her sport. She was a "winner" before she ever stepped onto the court in my opinion. Nobody will ever be able to take away what Maty accomplished. I think even if he loses but put on a respectable fight, his career takes on a hugely different trajectory. The Georgia defense dared him to throw. They had like 7-8 guys in coverage and their rush still got to him. If he had done OK against them, bulked up a bit, he could’ve been at least a journeyman back up. He looked solid in the pre season and in Mop up duty.

    One of the greatest high school games I’ve seen was when Mauk’s high school team Kenton played Archbishop Alter in the playoffs. Alter ended up winning 35-32. Kenton never ran the ball. Never punted. Never kicked extra points. Always kicked onside kicks.
    On a side note, Connor Bazelak went to Archbishop Alter. Small world!

    I saw him play in the best high-school football game I ever watched. It was a final 4 game for Ohio high-school State playoffs. I had family on the other team and they had their best season ever at that school won by an average of 50 points in a 10-0 season. But Matty got his team the final score in a crazy back and forth shoot-out I believe he got a state title the next game. He was very good I remembered the name as soon as I Saw it on here.

    As with all uber talented QB's and players - there are so many factors that go into long term success. Some aren't even in their control. The stars truly do have to line up even for the best to see long term success at every level. I'll never fault Eli Manning or John Elway for how they handled getting drafted.
    Great to see his Dad is still with him.

    As one of his good old friends, and a top receiving target for him in H.S. . . Hell, I went to elementary school with the guy. He has always been an athletic guy. Definitely a cannon, threw 60 65 yds on the knees. Put a lot of time in the weight room and doing throwing sessions all year round. Agile, and quick. We went to state 2 years for 4x1 in track and field. He went for long jump as well. He liked to have fun with just about everything, jokes, pranks, games, challenges, and on Fridays. Family is great and very dedicated, always felt welcome. So the news with his father certainly rocked him and his friends and family. So decisions changed a few things but he is still doing great things and was one of the best of the Era.
