Shea Patterson didn't leave Ole Miss because he was "screwed" by the program. He left because he wasn't ever going to be the starter again after Jordan Ta'amu (pronounced Tay-ah-moo) came in and played better. Once Shea figured out he wasn't going to start anymore, he left. Simple as that. Didn't have anything to do with the NCAA investigation, although that did provide him with a good excuse to leave. Remember the NCAA originally didn't grant any waivers for the Ole Miss players who wanted to transfer, so Patterson was taking a huge risk transferring because it could have easily cost him a year of eligibility, but because he would have been relegated to the backup, it made sense.

@@randyjordan5521 I wouldn't say Ole Miss was a mediocre program when Shea got there. In 2015, the season before Shea arrived, the Rebels finished ranked 9th in the nation, beat Alabama for the second year in a row, and won the Sugar Bowl. They did fall into mediocrity the following years, but they had certainly been very competitive in the toughest division of the toughest conference in all of college football.

Some guys I worked with way back in 1996 got me hooked on following HS football recruiting. Eventually, it became obvious as the biggest determining factor is the ability to make the mental leap when you realize that everyone was All-District in HS, even the walkons. The top college athletes are the ones who can focus mentally as well as physically, occasionally you get a complete freak of nature who can dominate on skill alone, but most top players are top players because of their mindset. I am not an athlete or a psychologist, these are just observations, so take it for what it is worth.

He had the potential to be great, but it is all on him. This is from a SI article "Gattis seemed to indicate that Patterson didn't put in the necessary work over the summer, citing the quarterback's time spent on the golf course versus in the film room and throwing with receivers. That's not the best endorsement from a new offensive coordinator looking to get off to a fast start with a veteran QB and talented wide receiver room." I think because he already had a MLB contract Patterson did not take playing football as serous as someone who is trying to get into the NFL.

Solid video, but the Michigan narrative is pretty rough. Rudock and Speight played well when healthy at Michigan, O'Korn was absolutely abysmal, and in Shea's first year, the team was top-3 in the country rolling into OSU and favored in that game (they had lost despite Harbaugh's best game plan in 2017 due to O'Korn's poor play and 2016, of course, was the "J.T. was/was not short" game). The team was back to a high level again his senior year, but really, Shea's success started and ended with non-OSU home games, and in most of those, the run game carried him at times. I think Harbaugh messed him up, personally. The Michigan offense was horribly conservative while Shea was around. One example that still pops up in my head from that period is that Shea was absolutely stellar at executing RPO QB run design plays, so what did Harbaugh's offense do? Always run the RB in those situations. But yeah, just wanted to comment on the Michigan narrative here as somebody who just graduated from UofM in June.

Shea Patterson put Michigan with opportunity at the College Football Playoff going into Ohio St both years but that's where it went bad.. But he had some unbelievable games for Michigan including passing for 800 yards and 9 TDs in the 2 games leading to the Ohio St game in 2019 and was big in 3 straight ranked wins in 2018..

As a fan of big blue, I really did not see anything special about Shea. He was not horrible, but he was clearly not the man to lead the team. He was definitely athletic, but never impressed me. He had more than enough weapons on offense to really make his mark as one of the great talents to wear the uniform, but was constantly finding himself scrambling for safety, more than looking like a great field general.
I hope that he is able to find that elusive gear in the pros.

Sure it made all of us feel better saying “let him leave, Jordan would beat him out anyway “, but there was never a dispute on who was the starter while Shea was healthy. Could Jordan have beaten him out? Sure. Did Shea leave because he could possibly be a backup on a team that had NCAA sanctions? Sure. Can you blame him? Nope. Most Michigan fans don’t realize that Ole Miss ended up playing better after Shea got hurt. Part of the reason for his transfer was he would have had to fight for the starting role with Jordan Ta’amu. Dude would have thrown to DK Metcalf, AJ Brown and Bills TE, Dawson Knox.
He never fit Michigan’s pro-style offense. Jordan Ta’amu ended up going to the new XFL. After the XFL, Kansas City signed Shea and Jordan around the same time. A little Ole Miss reunion.

Then gets drafted in 3rd round in 2016 and played 2 seasons and is basically out of the league, (has been signed to 3 different teams since, but gets cut and hasnt made a roster yet) already due to being a free agent but nobody's signed him.
