Just found this after seeing this on VHS mid-80s. I've spent countless hours trying to find this for the last 25 years, I couldn't remember what it was called. Thank you.

Practically the same story, here. A single memory of a peacock-looking firebird/Phoenix, pecking at the body of a female cyborg, and he'd turning gray, as she tried to protect someone.
It's unreal how the mind works. I thought I had dreamed it, at times.
The reality of the art style being real is what lead me to find it. Born in 82. Masterpiece.
We grew up with the greatest shit ever.

Lived in Okinawa for a time in the mid 90s. The base video store had this for rent, and I had no idea what it was nor the concept of anime. I remember the egg creature taking over the doctor haunting me for some reason. The name escaped me up until today when "Firebird" came to mind. Wow.

Thanks for sharing this. I remember watching it as a child and finding it both beautiful and disturbing. Cartoons with this kind of message were really unknown in the West at the time. I remember my grandmother buying it for me on VHS in a kid's bargain bin along with Princess Knight. I remember when I watched them feeling that these were very different and unsettling compared to the cartoons I usually watched. Princess Knight was weird, but Space Firebird was grim for a 10 year old, and I put it out of my mind for 30 odd years. Until I came across it again while idly surfing through Wikipedia, and it all came back to me. I had to relive my memory and was lucky enough to find the rip of the film I originally watched here. Thanks for bringing back the memories! I think I can appreciate this better now as an adult. :)

The title of the movie just came to my mind when I was trying to sleep tonight, and while I do not remember the plot, I remember that this movie made me feel so sad as a child, for some reason. Except Tezuka left Disney in the cosmic dust by going into science fiction and Disney never really did.
There's even an American-Belgian animation production collaboration that produced 1965's, Pinocchio In Outer Space, that beat Disney and every other animation studio going into science fiction.
I don't consider Hanna-Barbera's The Jetsons nor Jonny Quest on the same level.

After reading the comments it is funny how alot of people have in common that their parents brought this on VHS or they saw this on VHS when they were young, I am one of those who was lucky to see it back when on VHS too, my dad was the one who got me into anime before I even knew what anime was lol, but this one is one of the animes that stood with me, along with Battle of Planets (Gatchaman), Macross/Robotech and all those other great shows of the 80s/90s.
Both me and my older sister watched this and she always favoured this as much as I did, I have heard the Japanese voice over aswell, but the English dub was the one we both remembered back when and yeah it wasn't perfect voice acting, but it was some thing that still made us want to watch it and enjoy it, infact I believe this movie was what introduced me to the Phoenix when I was young, as I had no idea what a bird made of fire was, I just called it Firebird, but my oldman knowing his myths and legends said to me that the correct word is Phoenix, I know in Japan it is called something else, again good times

    17:55 She eats her spinach!
    42:46 LOL! Great hiding place!
1:20:51 ...Am I the only one who thinks this looks a little obscene?
1:21:10 And now that she's rinsed the windows, she's gonna give 'em a quick rubdown. In just that one spot.
1:43:29 This inspired one of their bedroom games.
1:49:25 _"I've the power to make all your dreams come true. So please say, 'I would like to live forever.'"_
    _"Orga...have you been--"_
    "Drinking?"
    _"--possessed by some other being?"_
    "Oh."
    _"Is it...that...that..."_
    "THAT WHOɌE!"

Bad dubbing aside this was a pretty good anime film

  • @zemxxi2765

There is no good reason why this film has faded into obscurity. This is a Tezuka anime, for crying out loud! This should have been remastered and rereleased years ago on DVD with the original Japanese w/subtitles along with this Toho dub. I don't think they should bother to redub it. It's a period piece and the Toho dub is appropriate for the period it was made. Modern voice actors tend to overact and Americanize (Westernize) the dialogue and voices.
This film was apparently dubbed by the same pool of actors whose voices are recognizable from Kung Fu Theater dubs. Godo, I think, is the same voice actor that dubbed Gordon Liu for The 36th Chamber of Shaolin (aka Master Killer). And Dr. Saruta sounds a lot like Sam Seed in Drunken Master.

Osamu Tezuka must be a fan of killing off kid friendly mascots like Disney like killing characters we love off. Just look at 1:51:51, 1:26:11 and 1:28:42.

Meem Masheen I meant that one that cleans. I just added the wrong time. Also how can you not love that character. She was the most helpful and cheerful.

@David Malcolm But it wasn't Olga, rather the Phoenix's spirit within the body. Olga's spirit/being was dead. Phoenix being a human didn't really matter as she was just envious of Olga and the guy's love, otherwise; why would she do does a horrible thing? Ugh it still makes me mad 😠

Where is the girl that I thought it looks like they'll get married, since they both had a kiss, but didn't see the wedding scene later of them and have kids together I expect to see just like in Marvelous Melmo I know Melmo married a boy and had a baby so I thought Lina and Gardo gets married as well have a baby too?
After being shocked that Gardo was not being birthed by the mom, how sad right?
Why did the guy turned back into a baby and not show him marry the girl?!
I didn't watch the whole movie, but....
