Just finished this morning, always exciting to be finally be able to watch the next set of Malaztube videos 😄
I found this book the most difficult so far to pick up on overarching themes throughout. One thing I noticed explored consistently was the relationship between Gods and their followers. Even more broadly, between idols and devotee (I.E Leoman and Corabb, Tavore and the 14th).

For me the most engaging read in Malazan until now.
The two chapters in Y Gatan and whats happening in the aftermath is some of the best i have ever read in fantasy and beyond...
    I´m absolutly amazed.
I think the writing style that don´t explain every thought of the characters and leave things to the imagination of the reader, makes them all the more real and understandable.
Especially in times today, some questions are very strong : Is it possible for people to fight in the wars committing crimes and stil be good people? Is there something like true peace? Or is it just an idea?

I think all the earlier novels converge here.
The mirror to the dinner scene from Gardens.
Kalams quest: talked out of it by Laseen in Deadhouse Gates and talked into by Támber here XD. Finally he desides his fate.
The Bridgeburners end in Memory of Ice and there memory lives on in the newly born Bonehunters

Cotillion and Shadowthrone reveal a good junk of their agenda.

Another great discussion Philip and A.P. I am a first-time reader of the series and since I only finished Bonehunters earlier this week, I am still processing the novel. However, one thing that popped into my head as Philip was discussing the themes of truth vs. expediency/the right thing vs. propaganda, was (trying to stay spoiler-free here) what literally happens to the character (off-screen anyway) named Truth in Y'Ghatan and the deliberate choice by Erikson of that name. There is certainly more much more subtle discussion of those themes, but that particular scene and that character's name pulls it to the forefront.

Without getting too specific here since it's the spoiler free video, he sets up the idea in "The Age Descending," as you observed, and then follows up on it several times. One example is when Ganoes Paran rails against the gods, declaring they will give answer for some seriously nasty stuff going on, and another example is when Fiddler plays his namesake in Malaz -- an incredible moment in this series and an act of giving answer, I think.

We aim for snazzy around here! I'd actually love to show up for a video in chain mail . . . Hmmmm. Also, I plead guilty: the non-spoiler video is a great way to tell people why these books are so cool and, hopefully, give them a try. I wish you the very best in tackling The Bonehunters -- it's a big book, and when I got to the end of it, I felt changed, which is why I consider this series my favorite of all time.

@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy Philip Chase in chain mail? Should I be egging you on? Oooh yes!! 😈 I definitely watch that! Maybe one of those medieval sources of fantasy videos? So in the interest of health and safety wait till the winter as they can get quite hot (for the wearer I mean, but who knows maybe even in a fashion sense. Many a medieval frouwe seems to have been quite smitten.)
I'm still far, far away from Bonehunters as I still have not finished Deadhouse Gates, entirely my own fault as I started to read other, mostly non-fiction, stuff.😞 But mission accomplished! You got me completely hooked on MBotF.

@@brush2canvas849 Ha ha! We’ll see. I have a feeling chain mail might be an investment. It’s not something I’d be able to pick up at Walmart. Although, come to think of it, I do have a good friend from high school who is a blacksmith. Hmmmm. About reading Malazan, the great thing is there’s no wrong pace. What’s right for you is what’s right. But I’m happy you’re enjoying it so far!

@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy hence knights tried to get their opponent's equipment at a tourney. So cost wise nothing much changed since the middle ages. But before you remortgage the house maybe try getting one on loan from a re- enactment group.
Ah, Philip! Not enjoy, the most over used word on booktube! Can we settle for something like 'I appreaciate the experience'?

Sorry to hear that - I hope it improves for you. If I think back to the first time I read it, there might have been some moments that stretched out a bit for me. This time, I savored every moment of reading. So much of our reading experience can depend on where we are and our current state. Best wishes for your reading!
