    These streams and the AP videos have been a big part my first reading of Malazan. After finishing a book a bunch of videos get unlocked so I always look forward to finally watching them after I finish each book. It gives me a chance to recap everything that happened and reflect on what I just read instead of just jumping right into the next one. I like taking a breath and absorbing what I read, first. This is always the first place I go for the big stream, now I'll probably go see what AP has on Bonehunters.

    53:00 I love Corabb he's the dumbest luckiest madman in the world. When Fiddler asks him to join his sqiad and he says I've never speared a baby and don't plan to 😂😂

    The chat about the Roman Empire's influence was interesting - in Bernard Cornell's Last Kingdom series set in Middle Aged England the main character often marvels about how much more advanced the romans were than the Anglo-Saxon's & Danes.

    I just finished The Bonehunters a few days ago, and of all the amazing and epic moments in this book, the thing that has stuck with me the most is Fiddler's Song. There's one quote that has been burned into my mind and that I can't shake: "And so we weep for the fallen. We weep for those yet to fall, and in war the screams are loud and harsh and in peace the wail is so drawn-out we tell ourselves we hear nothing". Just beautiful.

    Every time I finish a book and I come here & it's like talking threw the novel with someone since I don't know anyone who's read Malazan 😂
    I have & love the sled accident cover! The image wraps around the book and you see Ganoes Paran

    1:12:00 I have a theory that the mule is the one and only Shadowthrone himself (don't spoul if it's later confirmed it's my first ever read through and I haven't read more than Bonehunters as of now): my reasons are 2:
    1. when all the suns fell down with the jade and Heboric and all the fun happening Mappo's inner monologue said he realized that not Spite nor Iskaral protected the ship they were sailing on but the Mule.
    2. At the end of the book the Mule was suspicioulsy absent and that's when Shadowthrone had a lot of stuff to do at the convergence in Malaz City

  • @aysseralwan

    Just to clarify my position on the cover art, it looks like a 2nd year art student painted it and got a C-, the scene it depicts is fine.
    Hell, we should commission Santiago Lozano to do a set of dust jackets for our tpb editions. 😁

    Also why in the world does Fiddler’s song take place during Kalam’s escape and the stand at the docks? Like there’s four of the best soldiers in the army that could absolutely be helping but instead they take time to play a mourning song? Did they not know the mob was attacking?

    Oh man, I’d been waiting for this! Great discussion and Allen’s surprise appearance definitely contributed to this lovely little convergence.
    I would’ve loved to be there in the chat, but 2:30AM is just too rough of a starting time during the workweek.
    I must say I really loved the return of Ganoes in this book, as well as Karsa and Samar Dev’s travels leading them to the Edur and the Letherii that we already knew about from Midnight Tides.
    The Bonehunters’ storyline was excellent in both parts, and their journey around the Seven Cities continent post-Y’Ghatan was fascinating.
    I don’t think you discussed the reading of the Deck of Dragons in Malaz harbour. The readings are always a bit too cryptic for me, but it would’ve made for some entertaining talk.
    Looking forward to Reaper’s Gale!

    1:32:00 Allen telling facts. In Deadhouse Gates I thought ok Laseen betrayed Kellanved and Dancer cuz she truly is just a better ruler and then she gets herself manipulated by Mallick Rel and Korbolo Dom the dumbest character I can think of that has ambitions more grandiose than getting out of the next fight in one piece!? Selling out the heroes of the Rebellion and genociding their most capable cavalry units (or at least that's the goal)

    While I loved the battle of Y'Ghatan and thought the book was full of wonderful character development, it is my least favorite Malazan book so far. I think for me, the 2-books in 1 structure really hurt the book for me and I hope that by book 7 everything will be back to awsome.
    I suspect part of the problem is that I have burnt myself out a bit by reading and re-reading book 1 to 6 without any breaks in between. (When I start a new Malazan book, I concurrently start re-reading the audiobook version of a previous one. GotM while reading MoI, DG together with HoC, HoC and MT during BH). After Bonehunters, I decided to take a break to read the Age of Madness and Rythm of War before plunging into Reapers Gale.

    • @thefantasynuttwork
      @thefantasynuttwork  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe a small break will welp yeah. Sorry you didn't love this one, it's Def my favorite but I can understand the structure of it being off putting. RG is much more similar to the previous books so I think you'll enjoy it!

    JUSTICE FOR THE SCORPION

  • @IshtarNike
    @IshtarNike ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My issue with the "upsides" of colonialism argument is that it's so often used to brush aside calls for restitution and justice. Honestly the Monty Python but is funny but it's actually quite poor argumentation because it implies a false dichotomy. EITHER we stayed in a less developed state with worse technology, OR we accept invasion and subjugation for the benefits. It ignores the idea that improvements can come through peaceful exchange and cooperation. It also reifies different cultures and people's. I know it's utopian but at the end of the day we are one race and we are more similar than different. We don't always need to assume that "our" people will never mix with "their" people and become one.

    This was a great discussion that cleared up a lot of questions I had, but Allen made this stream almost unwatchable. Way too animated, way too opinionated to the point of taking over the stream. It’s like he’s talking at you rather than to you.
