    So. Capoeira is a fighting style that slaves here, in Brazil, have creadted to defend themselves against the slavers. They uased to play some instruments and dance while practicing so the slavers wouldn't find out it was actually a fight. The capoeira fighters normaly don't do the ginga (dance) when fighting for real. It consists mostly of kicks, but punches and some grabing with the legs are used too. Capoeira without the ginga (dance) uses a lot of common kicks, so it might be hard to tell when someone is using doing it or not. Nowdays we have more complete fighting styles tho...

      There was also N'golo. N'golo is a traditional Bantu martial art from Angola, that combines elements of combat and dance, performed in a circle accompanied by music and singing. It is widely known as the forerunner of capoeira

      "Ginga", or "swaying", have a lot more than aesthetic uses. First and foremost, it plays the notion of rytym which you can then subvert, feigning a pattern that allows you to control the fight. Also it avoids you being a sitting duck for the adversay, since you're always flowing from place to place. Third, capoeira uses a lot of "spring" movements that depends on twisting your body in a way to deliver more powerful blows when the twist is released. Tension + Release = Power. Capoeira is all about momentum. So you often sway your torso, creating tension in the joints/waist you can then release when you find an opening.

    Batuque in brazilian portuguese means something like a dance or the song of the drums when dancing. It's related to the Capoeira presented in the manga

    • @ryukenshin1
      @ryukenshin1 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Portuguese man here, usually a drum-like instrument, although any surface you decide to slap with your hands rythmically, is in fact a batuque (also Brazil sucks)

      @alexkozliayev9902 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      As far as i know, batuque was a game that sailors played in the ports of brazil. The goal was to push the other player from the circle with kicks, or make them fall

      @Chriggan2 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Brazilian here. Batuque translates as "beat" in a musical sense. To hit something rhythmcally to produce music and is almost a synonym for drumming except you can "batucar" in any surface able to emit sound when hit. But I believe the manga means "beat" in a broad sense where you can just do music while beat someone.

      @alexkozliayev9902 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Chriggan2 In the manga they refer to Batuque as a lost martial art. When speaking about history of capoeira it's often said that Mestre Bimba was skilled Batuque player and transferred some skills from it to capoeira. But idk, maybe we all were pranked

    Something that I love about Japanese mangas is how they tend to represent other cultures around the world. You will never see an american comic represent a traditional martial art from another country like capoeira as the main subject of the story and the culture around it other than just a mimic that some background character has. Since, americans and europeabs tend to see this things as "something other countries do" as if it were too inferior to them despite some of their people practice it too.

    It's nice to find a youtuber who truly knows his stuff about combat arts manga:)
    What do you think of Garouden and Koukou Tekkenden Tough? Garouden was mid in my opinion, the protagonist was cool, but underused and while some fights were awesome it just didn't stand out. The best arc was probably the backstory of the wrestler based on Antonio Inoki. Koukou Tekkenden Tough is one of my favorites and (in my opinion) the strongest candidate for the best combat arts manga.

    Oh cool this video was uploaded on my b-day!
    I've never heard of this manga. We've heard of just about every fighting manga under the sun. Especially the ones drawn in such a distorted way. Again Capoeira is martial arts that you see characters in fight games or comics or movies identify with but never an in depth look. When I first heard of it I was fascinated by it and the history behind it. Much of it reminded me of the old B-boy dance styles. But I have yet to see actual battles showing it's effectiveness.
    Hey who knows, maybe your vid can get some exposure and someone can pick it up. I would love to see this title recommended to some of the manga distributors. It needs an anime. We had 'Air Master', which was one of my favorites featuring the most odd cast of female fighters and artistry.
