🌞🌻ABOUT THE CHANNEL🌻🌞
Bored of the usual vanilla, ‘Pollyanna-esque’ allotment/gardening vlog formats that saturate TH-cam, we decided to start our own, unique channel in 2023. Follow the adventures of our family as we navigate life on two allotment plots based in Devon in the UK. The Allotment Family Diary offers a light-hearted, realistic and informative look at the daily running of two large allotment plots. Chocked with dry-wit and lovingly edited, we film hours of footage each month to bring you weekly episodes that document life at our allotment plots, and sometimes outside of them.
🌷🌻ABOUT THE ALLOTMENT FAMILY🌻🌷
Tilly and Nick have maintained their plot for almost ten years now, and Tom (their son), Han (Tom's wife), and Flo (Tom and Han's daughter) acquired theirs in May 2023, with a plot extension in Feb 2024. Look forward to seeing Alfie (an elderly lurcher) and Tor (a young Romanian rescue dog) joining us in our diaries, as well as our 6 chickens (new additions to the Allotment Family), and various stray cats and other wildlife that call the allotment their home.

Ty for watching ☺️
Dave and Michael need to return if they weren’t drowned in beer. Hilarious! You did the right thing there. I’d have scorched the place. Not right putting up with that especially if they are raising your fees. Lovely video as always. Tell them cats to stop scrapping!
They…might be back! I was tempted to get the strimmer on the whole plot but didn’t really want to trespass - technically I didn’t by digging the trench as I stood only on the access path! Don’t worry. I’ve never actually seen any of the cats get physical! Ty for watching ☺️
oh and i also pellets. not growing food for snails. good tip with the chilly
Loved the snails chatting with plans for the goodies that you had planted for them lol.
Tysm. It’s always fun to insert a bit of humour into our vlogs ☺️
There must be a waiting list for plots, get the committee to release that weedy plot to someone to keep it tidy.!!!
Thankfully the plot is now being let. Fingers crossed it’s a good tenant that’ll get it in order! Tysm for watching 😊
plot next to me was neglected for 4 years and full of marestail. i asked if i was allowed to cover it up and was told no
Wow that artwork is SO GOOD! You should do commissions on sheds for people at your allotment ❤ Those cats are freaking adorable and I loved the snail chat. Love your vlogs 🐌😁
Ty so much, that’s very kind of you! Yes, the cats are very sweet ☺️
You did exactly what I'd have done .Its so damn annoying that they take so long to reallocate plots .Love the slug chat 😂
Yes, totally. We find it laughable when they raise our rent but funds could be made by actually letting vacant plots out. Glad you enjoyed the slug jolly ☺️
My mother swore by beer traps.
They are fantastic aren’t they! Ty for watching 😊
Here in the USA, I've been dealing with a lot of caterpillars munching on everything 😲 they have been bad this year. You did the right thing to protect your plot, and it's a shame that the council are lazy and don't do regular checks on the vacant lots. Glad that a new tenant will be taking on that nuisance plot 🙂👍 Happy birthday to your dad 🎉
Sorry to hear about the caterpillars. We haven’t come across any yet, but I’m sure we will soon! We’re hoping the new tenant will keep the plot in order - just happy it’s finally been let! Tysm for watching ☺️
Literal trench wars against the slime. Absolutely love it hahaha. My strawberries and beans were lost this year to slugs. The chilli thing looks promising and I might try it out. You go guy fight the powers. Super vlog as always. Different to the rest in a good way 💪🎃🫡
Sorry to hear about the beans and strawbs. Definitely give the chilli a go. So far not a single nibble on our swedes. Ty for watching ☺️
Loved the slug and snail video, made me laugh 😆. At the end of the day you are only maintaining the path which you are supposed to do. I would have done the same.
Exactly! Glad you feel the same. Got to set the world to rights sometimes. Ty for watching ☺️
My garlic was a disaster but most likely my fault I probably pulled it too early. It has been weather yo yo here it was 30+ yesterday and 14c today rain tomorrow 🤦♀️. Fab cucamelons 👍👍. Yes I would think the council have to keep it clear 😢 that’s bad maintenance and management. Good man 💪🏻 it’s not your job but great you stepped up to the plate. Your garden your rules is how I look at things too. Have a wonderful week a great update everyone, Ali 🇨🇦
Thnx, Ali! Tilly is doing a bit this week on the rest of her garlic, and we think a mild winter and wet spring could possibly be to blame. What a year for weather it’s been, all over the world apparently too! Thankfully the plot is now let, although we’d like to see more site maintenance especially considering the rent hikes. I guess if no one else will do it, you have to step up and get things done yourself! Hope you have a fab week, and the growing gods are kind to your garden ☺️
Cool, just heard someone is taking it on.
agreed councils should do more. makes you wonder what our rent goes on.. another great vid all. love the family dynamic and banter to.
I’d have to agree. Tysm for watching 😊
I had a snail problem until i threw a salt ring around my wall so they stopped coming into my garden
That’s great - A good win in the slug wars for you! Ty for watching 😊
@@AllotmentFamilyDiary It took 5 years of trials and errors before i got the one that works.
I mix chicken grain with water and red pepper flakes each morning then feed it to them the next morning. The flakes are good for them
Ty for the tip! I’ll be sure to let Tilly know ☺️
A less expensive option to beer traps is yeast. A teaspoon of yeast to a litre of warm water and use as you would beer. Mid winter here in NZ so not as many slugs around!
A fantastic alternative. Ty for the tip. We’ll be sure to try it out once the ale supplies are depleted! Ty for watching ☺️
Great video! Loved the "mollusk" chat😂 Really appreciate the chilies and other tips against the slugs... we are at war as well! Yes... I would have done the same along the public path... absolutely. Praying new neighbors fit in nicely!🙏💕 Blessings on everyone and your growing season! 🌻🐛Carolyn in Ohio 🌿💚
Tysm for watching, Carolyn. Have a great week ☺️
I might have accidentally oversprayed with weed killer ❤️
That’s naughty…But I like it! 😂
Or petrol!
Hi I would love to see what the black moon tomatoes look like when they ripen and could you do a taste test for us ❤🇦🇺 even though I live in Australia I have a similar growing season as you as I’m in the tropics.😀
Of course! We’d be more than happy to. We’ve never tasted them but apparently they are sweet with smoky undertones. I guess the proof is in the tasting. Hopefully Han might cook something up for us in a video too. Ty for watching ☺️
Would like to this this too 🍅
Had the same issue with our garlic, but ours is even smaller and not divided very much... Maybe not cold enough over winter as apparently that helps with division?...
Such a waste to have an empty plot full of weeds... Would think they would just let the community and volunteers do something with it in the meantime or just cover the ground at least?
Yes, had a very mild winter, then lots of rain. We’re thinking that could be the issue. Sadly they won’t let tenants do anything on other plots, although I was tempted to strim it all down at one point anyway! Thankfully the plot is now being let, so hopefully it’ll be kept in good order - We’ll post updates in future vlogs. Ty for watching 😊
Our chickens enjoyed our tiny garlic at least... as ours was so small it wasn't even really worth eating!
@@charlottec3379 that’s a great way to use it. I bet they were happy chickens too!
I have so many wood lice on my plot this year 😒
It’s crazy isn’t it. Little buggers are everywhere 😩
You should see the empty plots next to me 😡 4years now of untamed brambles and stinging nettles ..council dgaf
It’s awful isn’t it. Have you taken any steps to resolve problems with the untamed plot? Ty for watching ☺️
I have to fight it back from the boundaries often, it soon springs back, I dragged some plastic sheet I found and tried to create a barrier but that is now itself overgrown.. does really P me off having to spend time and energy sorting it .. the neighbour the other side doesn’t seem to do anything about the bindweed and brambles either so I have it growing over the fences from three sides .. rent has gone up 50% in two years and is bound to increase again this year and they do nothing for it.. the waiting lists are so long, why are plots left empty for years and years 😡
I'm new to your channel- I love your fencing. Did you do these yourselves?
Hello, welcome to the channel and thanks for watching! Yes, the fences were built by us. If you’re interested in seeing how we did it please check out episode 10 where we do a tutorial ☺️
Lucky as we have so many mice! 🐁 you will not have that issue
Oh no! Thankfully all the cats at the allotment keep the rodents under control! Ty for watching ☺️
@@AllotmentFamilyDiary very lucky we are over run
@@ThatBritishHomestead Sorry to hear that 😩
Thnx for watching! ☺️
