Working on my Silver Birch Bonsai Forest

  • This silver birch forest/group planting is the largest of my bonsai trees in The Bonsai Garden, and in the biggest pot. It was inspired by and put together in 2019 after seeing the two video series by Nigel Saunders and Jonathan Aristone where they put together a silver birch forest. I consider these videos to be some of the finest in the subject:

    • Creating a Birch Bonsa...
    Unfortunately wire on one of the trees damaged the newly emerging leader and the tree, which was sat in a prominent spot at the front of the composition died. This is my maintenance work to give the trees their first root pruning, and to finally replace the dead tree with a new tree.

      Thank you! I need to be sure not to strangle the replacement tree with wire too. 😊

    Ah yes well done Jason, the Birch forests are our passions. This year I have two donor trees that are already white that I am going to air layer soon to make 4 new white trees to add next spring. Morten gave our group some very valuable tips for high success on air layering over the winter months, so I hope to make some major adjustments to my forest next spring. Possibly we may video the new transformation. Good luck Jason the new season is upon us already , yeah !!! Thanks for the cameo lol.

    That is a really nice birch forest. The new tree is really great with that nice white bark near the bottom. I hope it does well this season. The tree that didn't make it was really nice too, its a shame when they do that to us.

    I hadn't thought to use a wedge cut like before. Seemed to work really well. The last two forests I have had to break up first and then almost 'start again'. This episode leads in nicely to my BIG oak forest composition which has been in the pipeline for a few years now. I finally got the pot at Doncaster :)

    Fantastic job Jason! But why I am I hungry for a slice of cake now?🤣 I was at Jonathans a few weeks ago.. but his hardy trees were still all tucked away for winter. I'll be back in the summer to see his forest though. 🐦💙

      Be sure to get some video of that forest - I pestered Nigel for months for an update after the initial videos. 😁

      If doing it again I would try and get hold of slightly more mature trees - therein lies the main problem…

    Is it bonsai soil that it is planted in? It looks almost like potting soil.

    • @TheBonsaiGarden
      @TheBonsaiGarden  ปีที่แล้ว

      As one of my earlier efforts there is probably more regular compost in there than in my current soil mix, but there is also some agriculture sand, and some moler clay in there.
