    In this video, my Larch forest goes through some dramatic changes in just a few days.

    NEWLY SUBSCRIBED! I used to bonsai 25 years ago for several years, but then I had to move internationally. Now I am just getting back into 'bonsai-ing'. Back then, I could only learn from books and also visit bonsai expeditions to get inspiration... but now there's genius people LIKE YOU at my fingertips... and for that, I thank you!
    You are a true artist!

    Nigel, you've done a truly BEAUTIFUL job on this forest. I know that it's sinful to envy someone's work, but dag gone it, I envy your work here. This is exactly what I want to accomplish and combine it with detailed model dioramas, too. Your techniques have moved me a lot closer to my goal. THANKS BUDDY and may you and yours have a blessed day.

    Thanks so much for letting us watch your process. I think a lot of people are too timid or perhaps too vain to allow others to witness anything other than the final take. It’s so helpful to people like me to watch how your brain works though. I learn so much from watching you work things through. You’re the Bob Ross of bonsai

    Hello Mr Nigel. With this work you took an iconic piece of you and of bonsai world and tried to transform it to a masterpiece. And this fight within you it’s the real path to create something higher.
    Thanks for the inspiration.

    This forest is the reason I started to watch your channel and its such a treat to watch it evolve! Didn't like it at all at first when you started to break it up and replanting, but the result is nothing short of amazing! The height difference gave it so much more life. It reminds me of a forest from my childhood and it's a dream of mine to one day have something as beautiful and awe inspiring. Thank you for sharing!

    Nigel I love the videos I learn a lot. Since you're more relatable than those frequent flying bonsai professionals. This is truly a labor of love. You must have an uber patient wife. And if you spent 1/4 the time you did on your hair as you do on your plants. You'll probably look like brad pitt.

    Love the changes to the Larch Forest! As you were going...I was feeling pretty proud of myself as I was making some of the same decisions and judgments you were before you said them. ...I'm going to take that to mean I'm actually learning something. lol The chick taking a gander at the forest was pretty cute, too. My first thought was a fuzzy, Velociraptor had entered the forest! ;-) Thank you for sharing the hard work you do, Nigel.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks Bonnie, it's funny, when I'm editing the videos, it's easier to see the overall design, maybe because it's smaller than real life and it's more 2 dimensional. That chick is so cute, we have four of them, all Silkies.

    • @bonniehyden962
      @bonniehyden962 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We put 40 eggs in our incubator...only got 5. But they were adorable. They're already big enough to be put into "General Chicken Population" and doing very well. On seeing the design, I'm wondering if it's just the change in perspective that makes it easier to see what you want to do with each tree or design? Maybe with your naked eye...there's too much going on around the perimeter but in the video there is a focal point....the tree(s). However you do what you do...it's all good!

    I'm glad to see it's completely safe to repot in summer, I'd repotted a pomegranate tree of mine as the soil was just not draining at all and I was very worried it'd kill it doing it this time of year, but seeing someone who has a lot of experience doing it reassures me it's alright to do so.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With moderate root pruning and good aftercare, most summer re pots will survive.

    • @ashliiprigmore5441
      @ashliiprigmore5441 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd pruned a bit off, but the majority of the roots had come off as I was repotting as it was insanely root bound, the tree seems to be doing alright now! Thanks for your advice!

    this episode was an adventure nigel. watching you separate the forest in half was almost like a horror scene, and dangerously close to Friday the 13th..lol but it came back together quite seamlessly and looks great. and that topknot hairstyle is gona be EPIC when it grows out fully, I hope we get to see that before you decide to cut it all again haha. thanx for bringing us along, I cant wait till the next leap ;)

    Hey Nigel, I have what I was told is Dawn Redwood Metasequoia that I had found and dug up from my back yard, it was growing from underneath a pump pipe and fence so it has wonderful movement to it naturally but I've had it planted all summer and while it's not dead there's been no new growth. From what I understand they're quick growing trees so I'm worried that it's stunted and I don't know where to go with it from here.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It may be re generating the root system. It is common for collected trees to sit and sulk the first year. As long as it is still alive, it should take off towards the end of this year or next spring. They do like lots of water and it may need some winter protection from severe cold.

    Don't you just love mica pots! I have been using it for my bonsai as well. Like the lowered position and the move to the left. Why don't you add a small pond? Could use anything small that will hold water. What do you think? I envision small deer statues in this landscape in the winter. All the changes ameliorated this planting. Beautiful forest!

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great ideas, I like them! I can't imagine how careful you would have to, moving a large clay pot around. I'm always bumping the mica pots against door frames, the trunk in the car etc. A clay pot this size would be very expensive and you would have to be so careful not to have it chip!

    You have so many nice pots, I have such a hard time finding pots let alone trees, where I am (Niagara Region)!

      I lucked out finding the large mica pots! They were purchased second hand at a bonsai pot sale. It might be the first and only bonsai pot sale I ever encounter!
      You can purchase the mica pots on line, they are expensive, but not compared to clay pots. Mica pots will last you the rest of your life!

    The part about the best time being in spring depends upon where you're at. In the Pacific Northwest it is best the do the repotting in the fall just as they are preparing for winter. I did this for years with good results. To date I don't have one single tree that was repotted in the spring the was still living a month later.

      Spring weather can be very unpredictable and and can be a big factor in the trees recovery. We had a very short transition from winter weather to summer weather this year so the re potting season was very short, only about two weeks. Thanks, for your input on the subject, It is always nice to hear what other people do and when!

      Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone: I am learning a lot from you. I have a couple of "bonsai" myself, but learned I did a lot of stuff wrong. Hopefully I will get a proper bonsai with the knowledge I got from you. Love the fact you almost never use wire... I've seen a couple with wire though, but most is achieved by pruning, I think... Right?

    Very nice! Though I think your main tree ended up tilting a little to the left.
    I only have the possibility to keep indoor trees so I envy all your moss and the work you do with the undergrowth.
