What caused me the greatest confusion was actually being the last person standing in the second to last boss melee in one dungeon. My free company companion, level 80 black mage, died (he had so much better gear than me). The tank died. The healer died. I'm right in the very middle of the melee doing my sub standard don't quite know what I should be doing lower level Black mage rotation and I'm alive. There was literally a stunned silence from everyone else for a whole minute after I finished off the mob. I said "What do I do now?" "Anything you like - no just wait, we'll be right there" was the private message from Free company guy, who now thinks I'm super fantastic (nice of him, but totally incorrect) and praises me to all the others. I still have no real idea what happened there. Except, sometimes I've found, as Black mage, that standing right in the middle works better than bobbing around the outer edges (usually not in dungeons though) - have no pretensions to wanting to be a tank and the responsibility of healer would crush me. The huge difference I find with FFXiV from any other MMO I've played is how important it is to know your rotation and skills. Other games it's useful, but not vital. In this game, being fat fingered, nervous or losing track of the order of combat skills is usually fatal. Getting flustered is fatal. Let's just say, I'm familiar with the grouting in floor tiles in most dungeons.
I will always commend someone for being an absolute trainwreck in a dungeon. It's one part pity, one part passive aggressive. If nothing else you tried your best and were entertaining.
helps when the devs bake rewards for being nice and discourage bad behavior into the game. just like all the speeders who slow down when they see cops or when the gov subsidizes tax credits for investing or buying certain things. sure some people are nice straight up, or dont break any rules no matter what... but there's a whole lot of wiggle room for the majority of players.
It really confused me and I love it so much. A lot of people are nice, even on EU servers. I didn't play WoW before, only LoL (which already has one of the top 10 worst communities ever I guess) and some other MMO's, playing stuff since 1998. Started Ff14 2 months ago for the first time and it still baffles me how nice almost everyone is. Of course there are still idiots, especially in the PvP Roulette bs, but they are a clear minority
I don't really play FFXIV, but that is because I don't have time to devote to MMOs these days. Back when I did play, early on, I was playing archer and kiting around something that was WAY out of my league in one of those 'popup quests' and a random Lalafel healer came over and started backing me up. 5 minutes later, it was me, that healer, and 2 black mages just going to town on this thing until it finally died.
As s tank I always make sure to compliment my healer unless they really, unforgivably dropped the ball. I just love the FFXIV community's team-work focused mentality of "thanks for your part!" rather than WoW's "HoW coUlD yOU fAiL ME!?!?".
When your team gets wiped and the healer types "I'm sorry guys" in the chat and we all just pat him on the head and say "no worries" and the tank says "I'll pull less".
This literally happened to me two nights ago. Just started as a healer (now a lvl43 White Mage) and started a dungeon which I've never played (one of the optional ones w/ the ant colony). The tank was a little too aggressive w/ pulling, and between that and my figuring out where best to place myself as enemies aggro'd, I ended up seeing him killed, quickly followed by everyone else. Before I could apologize, the tank said pretty much "I'll pull less next time" and everyone else was like "it's all good / no worries" regarding the party being killed. Sure enough, when we all respawned the tank pulled less and we cleared the rest of the dungeon. I got two commendations. =D
Bro I freaked out last night I just started a week or so ago, I was in the great library I think dungeon at the end all 3 ppl were like hey you did great, and way to watch out for that and all 3 gave me the commendation marks it was my first time in there. I literally thought I was being trolled. So far every dungeon I have been in from LVL 15 now at level 67 everyone has said hi and no long drawn out explanations just simple on this fight do this and this and I have only died twice due to me not paying attention and moving fast enough. Coming from 15 years of wow I feel like I did when I first played Everquest.
You will usually find people explaining strats to sprouts for dungeons that actually are a bit harder than "dont stand in orange". Which is the case for most "postgame" dungeons of each expansion, as well as several as the lvl 65+ ones. Not necessarly right away, but usually if by any chance you wipe or die they will explain what's going on. It's not necessarly out of niceness but also for actually wanting to finish the dungeon :P
Most WoW refugees I've encountered in dungeons are always begging not to be kicked or constantly saying they're sorry for not dpsing enough... I feel really sorry for what they had to endure.
same, had a run of The Navel last night in which all 3 others were first timers, one fell off the side (of course) and was SO worried we be mad and apologizing profusely, I did my best to reassure them and congratulate them when we cleared. But it's kinda sad to see how traumatized some of the new players are from their past experiences in other games.
... FFXIV dungeons are WoW Normals and Heroics. No one gives a single damn how much DPS someone is doing in Normals and Heroics unless they're afking. No one is "enduring" anything by doing some leveling dungeons in WoW. Also most new players are not going to be running ACT yet and aren't going to know if they're underperforming or not in the first place to even bother apologizing. Weird post.
@@Ventorath i agree. people are polarizing the games when they and its communities aren't too far apart. main difference being squeenix actually monitors chat and bots, a side effect is people not using gamer words out of fear of ban in group content. granted thats a good thing to keep the toxicity out which is nice, but people tend to guise their toxicity in ff14 with direct passive aggressiveness. theres still buttloads of assholes in both games, they just go about it differently
It's so heart warming. Three years ago when I was first joining, i was determined to run extreme leviathan (was also a sprout that time, i just looked up mechanics, and video guide). So i queued for it. The party consisted of all sprouts. We wiped too many times. I was a tank and I gave tips, feedbacks and everything that was taught to me, as I havent cleared them myself either. No leaving, no blaming, only "Again" "we will get it this time" "you are doing great" Literally the last run because we would run out of time if we fail one more time. The sheer amount of cheers and caplock screamings when we dealt the final strike to boss, was completely overwhelming. No special loot that run but that feeling alone, is worth it. 7 commendations and 8 proud sprouts left the trial victorious.
And after three years, and looking back, you now know why that party was full of sprouts. Haha! You hadn't yet learned that most people in the NA servers usually use the party finder to form groups for extremes on the NA servers.
As a recent sprout I can confirm this is very true, people being nice is not expected and when it happens confusion ensues because for a previous wow player if someone is being nice to you they are probably trying to scam you.
I legit had to ask a FC mate if there was some trick being played on me because someone was randomly just trading me a minipet. o.0 I had no idea what was going on. People are hella nice in FF14.
I know man. Like I never said a damn thing in that game, yet others are talking to me nicely. I feel like I'm in lala land. Nobody is telling me what I'm doing wrong.
@@arcanadawn Haaa I love the hesitant pauses and confusion I get from people when I run up and randomly gift them things like campfires or full sets of accessories if theirs are really underleveled and they're a sprout.
sprouts are the game's future, without sprouts the game would stagnate and die. we have to take care of them so they can all grow in to perfect legends ❤
As a roughly week-old sprout, bless you and everyone like you. I am legitimately terrified of being a "that guy" WoW refugee, and it's been wonderful seeing how friendly folks generally are in FFXIV. I do believe I've found my new home =)
In general I think people in FFXIV overstate how friendly it is but then I see sprouts who are terrified of letting know they're new (even hiding the sprout) and it's just... what hell experience have you had before?
@@jreyes9005 I remember playing as a Tank before. The only thing I had said to be once was 'Good job, but get some better gear for next time.' It wasn't toxic nor did it sound like an insult.
WoW refugees are people that just escaped an extremely abusive relationship. The genuine kindness from FFXIV players AND staff, it can be very confusing and even overwhelming for the refugees. Be gentle.
It's not just that. We wow players (i never played FFIV but im looking into it and considering it), are both abused and abuser. It's an abusive relationship going both ways. But some of us, like me, grown so used to it, believe it to be so normal and usual, we're confused and uncomfortable when it isnt this way. Example, i tried running quite high level M+ key recently. Party leader turns out was very bad at his class (told me later he didnt play in 10 years). We fail miserably at 2nd boss, twice, reach conclusion it's impossible for our party to finish this, let alone in time. At this point, im sitting there, excited for shitshow that will unfold. Tank apologyses, says he's sorry we weren't able to complete and ruined the key. Leader says it's cool, good try. All people said good bye, mage even put a portal for us so we can leave. I don't recall ever being more uncomfortable, and i am not exagerating. I didnt run any dungeon for 3 days after that.

If you do join us then look up Savage AF, we're some of the friendliest people in the entire North American data center and we love helping out new people.
This. I literally wiped my group as I was new to the dungeon and yet people were still praising me for good heals that the run was awesome. I got two commendations as well. It was crazy. Haha after it was finished I remember just sitting at my desk very confused. Other communities, WoW especially, are just incredibly toxic.
Honestly, most of the internet was nice before 4chan; that's one of the few places online in the 16+ years of internet before it that encouraged trolling and abusing anonymity. I was so shocked when Star Wars the Old Republic turned in to a mess of toxicity. It just didn't exist as a cultural thing in MMOs before 2010.
@ZechsMerquise73 I don't know. Some of those early mmos were rough. Back then people could just say anything to you and you didn't know what they could or could not do in some games or if you used MIRC to talk to people. Like. Now people hurt your feelings, but back in the day a few people could fuck up your computer and you didn't know who could and who was just talking. One of my buddies got rid of a power-tripping mod that way.

(Helldump intensifies.) Wasn't The Old Republic that game where the community collectively griefed a PvP event by queuing and refusing to help their factionmates while the GMs did nothing?
This was literally me for like the first month. It was pure culture shock. Decades of WoW and first person shooters only to find out that not everyone online is horrible, and so I don't have to be either. It's like being born and raised in an evil Empire or warmongering culture only to find out there is another way to live. Like, it's hard to adapt and even a little jarring.
That feeling when you’re dying in a quest that was a little harder than you expected, and some random person passing by sees you, swaps to their conjurer, and pockets you until you finish killin all your enemies. 🥰
I've done this a few times. The alterative is coming across them right as they die and reviving them. Being able to switch class on the fly makes these kinds of moments possible.
Bruh I did that on PLD just the other day up in the crypt in Eastern Thanalan, saw a sprout about to die while I was waiting for a FATE to spawn for a hunt and just turned and clemency'd the little lalafell. Healed him so hard I immediately pulled aggro off the skeleton as he gets a heal about 20 times the size of his HP bar.
This is one of the things that made me uncomfortable during the switch. I can't have a pug be nice to me! If they're nice to me, then I'll start to care about them. Can you imagine what kind of chaos that'll bring?! I might actually make friends and be sociable! God, what a nightmare.
@@supersongi Don’t worry, 99% of FFXIV players are like this. We’re mostly nice people that love solitude, especially since you can play a lot of the game by yourself.
Used to play WoW, tried playing as a tank and the first dungeon I did we wiped because I was still learning. Was heavily insulted for several minutes and then kicked from the group. Never tried tanking again Switched to FFXIV, randomly picked gladiator as my starting class not realizing it was a tank. Messed up in the first dungeon. Party said it was all good, gave me some pointers and we cleared on second try. Now a level 77 Gunbreaker and I absolutely love being a tank. Even when I mess up at high levels, everyone is always super chill or will give a quick rundown of whatever mechanic I messed up. God, I love this game and community.
Can feel you. Actually really scared when i started tanking as DRK the other day. Did a few of the starting dungeons and people were cool. Got to Brayflox's and got really worried because of all the mobs. Guy literally spent about five minutes giving me tips and saying he'd keep up on my heals. Amazing folks and actually starting to enjoy tanking
I got one for ya I first played ifrit extreme a few weeks back and we all died like 5 or 6 times or so cause mechanics first then getting timing down but none of us complained except how tough the boss was we all had a good time. that is what a game is meant to be not what wow has apparently become
Is there built-in voice chat for parties in FFXIV, or do you have to use Discord? I'm on day two and haven't had any human contact yet. Feels like it's only typing and reading...is that the case, or am I missing something obvious?
That's awesome! I had a somewhat similar experience. Some random came up to me out of the blue, offered a trade, and gave me a few of Gil and a axolotl minion and I was so happy and confused at the same time
As someone who played FF11 a long time and now FFXIV for 8 years, in addition to about 5-6 years of WoW; Talking to new sprouts is super adorable and I love all of you.
@@WhiskeySins I honestly think my experinces in FFXI is the reason I'm so chill in every game I've played since. Nothing has actually felt as hardcore and rewarding as those years I spent in a very slow engine with lots of programmed in tediousness that didnt push players into a cash shop. It was hard for the sake of being hard, because people wanted a hard game to play. I genuinely dont thinkt he current generation of MMO players would survive in a game as hard as FFXI was when it launched, or for most of its lifespan. On one hand I'm glad MMOs are more accessible and anyone can play them... But I do also kind of miss my hardcore little nerd squad I put together to handle the territory control points and fight back the tides of the beastmen to keep player control of the continent. I havnt really encountered a system like that again.
@@emanmodnar2 The trip to Jueno as new player was an accomplishment lol, I played FFXI for 6-7 years, I remember the community was decent, but FFXIV is more relaxed as there is no NM claiming and camping. You make way more friends there than FFXIV though.
So, first dungeon I’ve ever done on ffxiv yesterday and - they helped me tank. They actually welcomed me, told me my rotations, what spells and buffs to use, and what to expect. I was mind blown by the whole thing. I was expecting a “you have been removed from the group” but nope. Amazing community so far.
Hahahaha idk why is funny to me when people expect the worst and instead we help them. I help sprouts because when i was learning other players helped me alot and it was just random people . So wenenver i can or if some1 tell me they new i try to explain each boss to them if we in a dungeon its easier and mayb u plant the seed on this new players to help others when they expierenced
@@cerberusnovaempire9483 FFXIV is a perfect example of lead by example. The story itself starts the whole idea in your head, with all the redemption villains, and almost all evil just being misunderstood good intentions. Then, just experiencing everyone else being nice to you, makes you pass it on as well, and the cycle just perpetuates. The game is literally molding people into being better people with nothing but story telling, and leading by example.
Had some WoW refugees in a dungeon with me the other day, and I had my mentor tag on. They were apologizing for every mistake, and every time we wiped, they acted like a kick was imminent. They told me they came from WoW, but I can't tell if their behavior stemmed from WoW or their experience with mentors. Either way, I just reassured them and told them: "You know the worst thing about wiping? Nothing. You run back and try again." The only thing you stand to lose in a wipe is time. But if time mattered, you wouldn't be wasting it in FF.
I wish people in other games saw it that way. People play MMOs like it's a job sometimes, but the most hardcore of that mindset is especially bad in WoW.
@@laerwen Typically these kinds of behaviors are perpetuated because nobody gives them a reality check or calls them out for their bullshit. A lot of people are like "Well gosh, I don't want to be mean and call them out..." And then it just becomes the norm. In order to stop a community from becoming a bunch of assholes, you need to call them out when they are being an asshole. Negativity is contagious, and it spreads quickly if left unchecked.
As a wow player, i can say that a huge part of the community is very toxic. People will insult you for nothing. And also, 95% of active players are people who spent too much money and time in the game that it turns them salty because they are frustrated of the game and themselves. And they don’t want to try another game because of the money spent in wow blocks their mind so they stick world of Warcraft and they ruins peoples day.
Its funny, I've played WoW for around 13 years now and I don't think I've run into the toxic aspect of raiding. A few jerks here and there, but mostly friendly. I always hear about it though haha.
I still have not done a dungeon in new WoW other than in the starter scenario. I have no desire to, because XIV has spoiled me so much in the leniency most non-Savage/Ultimate players grant.
@FstSergeant8595 FFXIV does have content where one person messing up can wipe you, you can't expect someone who isn't trying to improve to not be kicked. but its nowhere near or even remotely WoW like in even the worst of the raid community in FFXIV, for the most part. got worse when we got the flood of wow refugees, not all of them are good to have sadly.
FFXIV is the MMO where, for the first time in 10 years, I would like to communicate to people. Sending in good words and stuff just to keep up the mood. Raids can get troublesome and some small communications could raise the morale a bit.
I always try to do that. A little greeting before the run begins, and always mention if it's my first run of that dungeon. Learning the mechanics from TH-cam is nice and all, but actually experiencing the dungeon is a different thing.
This is exactly what I do. I've been an off-and-on player for about a year now, and just this week, doing things like Leviathan Extreme and Shiva Extreme _(the mount grind, errrghhh),_ I'm in a place now where I'm comfortable giving advice on mechanics, and just telling the team 'We're getting there, keep your heads up, take a breath, _we'll get this!"_ And I've seen the difference it makes, encouraging the team, making sure the new blood knows that we _all_ had trouble with this stuff, it's called _Extreme_ for a reason, but that they _can_ do it. And it's _so_ satisfying to be able to drop that GG in chat afterwards, after we take the win, and know that, for the most part, in this game, people know you actually mean it. I played WoW mostly during Vanilla and BC, and even then, it was just such a cesspool. FFXIV is like a breath of fresh air. I never thought I would like an MMO again, and for more than a decade I just largely stayed away from them. But I'm glad my friend got me into this one.
@@BlackwingSeraph If it helps at all, you can do the mount farming on Extremes unsync (basically, everyone doesn't get their level scaled back), which makes things go so much faster. If you haven't been using it, I'd encourage giving it a shot, makes the grind so much more bearable, since you can wipe out most bosses in about a minute with a couple of people at 80.
@@maniac7770 I actually just did that today! I had a friend help me and she stomped the fights repeatedly until we got what I was looking for. We felt a little silly when we remembered that was an option, but it was outweighed by relief that we didn't have to faceplant those fights anymore.
My very first dungeon, jumping in, I didn't know that I was in a cinematic and people were willingly waiting, I thought they were just watching it with me! They asked if I liked the scene, and I was like "uuh... Y-yeah! Were you guys waiting this whole time?" They were so chill about it, and they knew immediately that I was from wow XD
I recently did the Puppet's Bunker for the first time and I was the only one who was new. So of course get the final boss and there is a CS and I was the only one watching it. The rest of the group, all 23 players, not only waited for me to finish watching it but also for me to catch up and get into the arena. Had it been WoW I would have been kicked for wasting time. Heck, had it been WoW I would have been kicked after I declared it being my first time. Because that happened a number of times for me :/
It’s an unspoken rule in FFXIV that if someone is watching a intro to a dungeon, you let them Especially if they’re a sprout Same with the final boss entering the arena
I'd like to commend the whole group. Seriously, wouldn't have got through all the flash/bang confusion without everyone. Because I get a bit of lagg, I'm slow at the end, sprout and cut scenes etc. but I feel bad that I cannot give everyone more kudos. This game is tough! and nearly everyone has been fantastic. Not an ex WOW player but I do apologize a lot. Lol.
I can't speak for most people, but imo I really don't want the comm of somebody with a sprout. It is my responsibility to help you through the duty and to help explain niche mechanics or offer guidance on how to optimize ("thm use transpose between rooms to keep timer up"). I really want sprouts to commend each other, even when it may feel undeserved (though not in the face of unhelpfulness or toxicity). It gives sprouts that little bit of a high, or at least it did me, to know that even though *I* thought I sucked, somebody thought I did something special, and it made me want to improve my play to a point where I felt I deserved it. You never know who needs a little pick me up that day, but it probably wasn't the level 80 who's so keen to race through dailies that they don't wait for your cutscene to end.
I remember when I did my first FF14 dungeon, I told the group this was my first one, and the leader was just "Cool, this will be easy, so, sit back and just spam attacks. For boss fights, focus boss unless there are adds. Nothing to big, just relax and have fun." I even ended up with the majority of the loot. Everyone was really lax and friendly. Don't get me wrong, there are toxic people everywhere, but, the number of them in FF14 is on the rather low side. Things are typically calmer, smoother, and more friendlier.
I agree that things are generally friendly over there, but I always wonder how much of it is just it being a genuinely nicer community VS people faking it because they want commendations VS Dungeon content just being very low end (difficulty-wise) compared to where most of the toxicity comes from in WoW content. Probably a combination of all 3 I guess.
I can't speak for all of us, but most of us aren't faking it. I don't even need comms any more (not unless they add another tier in 6.0) but I want to ensure that new players feel comfortable in our game, because if they have a bad experience early on that might be all they need to uninstall. Can't grow the cult if you make everyone skittish, ahem.
@@Ventorath The game rewards good behavior and helping out. There are achieves for rezzing strangers, you get loot and xp if you help people kill mobs, even if you aren't in a party with them. Everything in the mechanics of the game is designed for players to cooperate with each other and be kind. You're not competing for resources, nabbing loot from each other, or camping someone's spawn to kill them over and over. The entire design philosophy rewards players for being nice. If leads to the players relaxing and (gasp!) having fun instead of constantly being worried that your spawn is going to be nabbed by someone else. Also, you've obviously never played high level dungeons in FF because they are not easy. :P Even veteran WoW players admit that. What they aren't is designed to just make you mad an frustrated and to kill you from invisible mechanics that come out of nowhere. They are designed to be hard, but not punishing. That's the difference.
@@Ventorath Honestly (and this may shock WoW players), a bunch of FFXIV players (especially the ARR 2013-2014 vets) are the way they are based on their own "sprout" experience. In my world of Famfrit, FCs were almost always forgiving, very helpful, made sure we were well geared for battle, and had a sort of "Pay it foward" mindset of helping others. In the end once the sprout fully blossoms, it's only returning what it was given in the first place: respect, kindness, helpful/wise advice, in hopes that the next sprout gets the same treatment as many others.
I'm one of those crazy players who got everything to lv 60 on the free trial, and naturally, I had to run a lot of dungeons. I've only ever found 1 toxic person and they started insulting the healer for not healing me, the tank, fast enough. I sort of replied something along the lines of "Hey, it's OK, they're doing OK, no need to be mean" and then explained to the healer what some of their abilities did (they said they were still new and didn't know what most of those did, by that point I'd already leveled all healers to 60, so I knew how to use them and remembered having the same struggles). We ended up swiftly clearing the dungeon and the dps who was originally mean actually apologized to the healer. It felt good to help people get along :D
I actually have gotten quite a few toxic people. But in general i just seem to draw people like that around me. Is it karma or just pure bad luck? I do not know.
@@Tyrvanasome people are just a little sensitive sometimes. I've had someone yell at me when dpsing cause I wasn't following exactly their stride as a tank. If I was running and pulling everything they have every right to have a go at me but I was actually just observing to ensure if they were moving along or stopping. They thought I was trying to ninja pull though and yelled at me for something I wasn't doing lol. They then kicked me when I talked back at their accusations. Most people I've encountered have been nice, at minimum civil, but I think that and another case stand out as the worst encounters I've had. On the contrary I've had very accomodating people if I've expressed I'm not very experienced with the class I was on and they slowed right down for me. This community is a mixed bag.
We did a higher level msq dungeon, and got stuck on a boss as all sprouts. We discussed what went wrong and kept trying different things go figure out the fight, 5 wipes and no leavers or complaints
It's an issue that's created by the community and fueled by the community itself. If you have all sprouts in a party, and they're able to do that, the same people could do the same in other games without being toxic equally.
i remember haukke manor hard. we get wiped 3 times by the third add. we discussed and realized we were all first timers on that dungeon. lol one said wait ill google. then explained the mechanic its later on that its more than levels and gear like that one sprout complaining he never died before but we keep getting wiped. well thats the turtle boss that we need to cannon the heal out of it. doesnt matter your exp gear or level at that. if you dont do mechanics you wipe. but what good was we werent even toxic to each other. just googled the mechanic and discussed
This tends to be how it is the first week or two into new content too. Don't get me wrong you can get people that clear it day one and get mad. But for the most part people work together to figure things out or let you figure it out as well.
complaining about wipes is what fc chat is for xD you support your party mates in party chat no matter how frustrating it gets, otherwise people just get upset and thats no fun for anyone
on one of my first dungeons, the tank kept pulling way too fast and i could never get a shot off in time, so i worked up the courage to ask if they could slow down so i could keep line of sight, and they DID! and they weren't even sassy about it or anything! i appreciate this community so freaking much! ;u;
@@yamisniper That's not just rough for healers, it's rough for all the casting classes. I usually play Arcanist/Summoner and when a tank does that I hardly get to play the dungeon. It gets frustrating. I haven't reached the higher level dungeons yet though, so I don't know if they keep doing it later on.
@@benjaminfast5496 they do. but that's quite normal and trust me you wont be bothered at all because funfact: lategame dungeons are made to be played like that, thats why many tanks get so used to it to play the same thing in lower content where they should maybe slow down abit because of the lack of utility and skills you as a caster have there. But be asured that will also change for your class. for every class that is. Finals Dungeon content is made to run from threshhold to threshold and then mow them down (wich is a bit sad tbh but thats how it is) and so are the later skills you get. especcialy summoner doesnt realy cast anymore.. you will have so many instants and ogcd's you wont even notice that youre running and shooting instead of just standing and shooting^^
I just started playing the game, and I found a crowd of people standing in a circle, spamming the glow stick cheer emote for a player cooking on a skillet. I was confused, but also somewhat charmed by it all.
If you just accept that the vast majority of players are probably super stoned, everything will start to make sense. I usually like to use my glow sticks in dungeons or trials while we're waiting. Party time is time to partaaaay.
In JP server, whenever a sprout managed to clear a raid or a dungeon despite dying few times, we like to congratulate them. Sometimes we use any firecracker we have or that champagne item. Since I rarely have those in my inventory, I usually clapped or cheered them once they're done with the cutscene.
I used to play on JP servers before OCE ones released. I'm new and still really bad at the game, but everyone was always really nice and understanding anyway. The auto-translate phrases really helped with communication, such a good idea!
lol yep. I did a double take the other day when the only non sprout in the party congratulated us for defeating a boss. At first I wasn't sure if he was being genuine or sarcastic, but by the end I was pretty sure he was genuine.
Genuine. They might have been playing up the praise a bit to try and be welcoming if you were new, dungeon bosses aren't all that hard really, but the intent was almost certainly to encourage. Very common in lower level dungeons when you might expect people to not be used to how the game works or some of the unexpectedly tricky ones like aurum vale. That or you were just performing noticeably above average, which is always nice to see.
@@Poldovico Yep whenever I play with someone from any of the ARR dungeons in leveling roulette and get the "First Time" notification If I can find out who's new to it I always give them a commedation just for getting through it and congratulate them (especially if they're tank or healer). I mainly do it just to be friendly and welcoming
@poldovico You'd be surprised at the number of morons I have come across in DF. Seeing sprouts do the basic minimum - hold the boss, heal, do damage is more than enough for me to say "good job you guys" or "gg" or something like that when I'm in a dungeon with sprouts. Especially with the lower level dungeons where there are certain tricks that vet players know, so when I tell sprouts to do something like "focus down the boss only, ignore all adds" and they do it, I'm super happy at that point and comm and compliment them,
If I only say "tyfp" and dip at the end of a leveling dungeon with a bunch of sprouts and neglect to throw confetti and use cheer emotes, I'm probably having a bad day.
In FFXIV the difficulty kinda ramps up step by step with every dungeon and trial, which means completing a new duty usually means "Hey, you learned some new mechanics and managed them properly", even if dungeons by themselves aren't hard, the 1st time in a dungeon we're always blind and could always be caught off guard by some mechanics. This ramp-up feeling goes throughout all expansions and encounters, meaning you'll usually feel like you're always getting better at the game with the tools you are given when leveling.

ahh levi ex i remember my first time beating it. 7 down bar for me the gunbreaker tank 1% hp and i just used my ranged pull to get the final hit as he was about to go for the tidal wave wipe. most epic thing 've ever done in ff14
@Vayalond might want to check out Trusts. Run dungeons with the Scions. You have to level them up but it’s pretty fast (4-5 per level) and then you can run any 71+ dungeon to your heart’s content with a pretty reliable group. Even Alphie improves 😆

I had one dungeon where I misunderstood a crucial mechanic and I literally died over and over again and my party everytime was like "lol np dude" "you'll get the hang of it" "just stick with us you're doing great"
same omg- i was playing a healer for the first time in a raid, and i was still new at what to look for and how to best utilize my skills, and at this one point (there must have been a lot of new players) a bomb attack that you’re supposed to dodge by hiding behind a rock took out half the players including me and we wiped, not a single person out of the 20+ people were upset, it was all “hey guys don’t sweat it, just hide behind the rock with us!” and i was already so nervous and overwhelmed, when we lived and learned they were all like “there you go! you got it!” it genuinely startles me so much it’s like i walked into another universe where online isn’t synonymous with hate and being rude 😅 any time i have a question it’s 100% of the time met with genuine responses and it’s so scary
As someone who's only played FFXIV seeing wow people come in and be shocked by how chill the community can be is really nice. We try our best and that's all that matters. Enjoy the game sprouts!
My favourite is seeing so many wow refugees are also not toxic either. It's the game itself. When you spend that much time playing a game that is designed to frustrate you and make you grind and do chores for 95% of your playtime, you start to internalise resentment, and that comes out on other players. When the game is actually fun to play and respects your time, it's much easier to not get annoyed because you don't feel like you're wasting time out of the 18 hours you'll need to do all your daily rotation of shit.
To all the people saying ‘the FFXIV community isn’t always nice’ - listen there’s gonna be jerks in any group of people but as someone who’s played a good deal of both games FFXIV’s few cases of actual trolls got NOTHIN on the troll levels of the AVERAGE WoW player let alone a super toxic one. Just let them have this lmao.
Your bar is extremely low. FF14 loves to tote itself as a "friendly community" but outside of WoW, every other MMO I've played has had similar or better communities as far as elitism and toxicity goes.

This was my first run! Being an English speaker on a Japanese data centre, I had no idea about the auto translate function. So here I am, telling them I'm new IN English, they are using the translator, I have no idea what is going on and at the end of it all they are using emotes to cheer etc and I'm trying to read about the commendations, by the time I knew what it was they had already left the dungeon. There was a lot of confusion in my first dungeon, at least for me! Massive difference to my first experience in WoW
Oh I'm in Pandemonium and yeah! I use romaji Japanese though hahaha but these newer servers definitely more friendly than the legacy ones. They give you lots of commendations even when you know you sucks hahahah
Fellow JP server player here, don't worry about language barrier. As long they can understand you well, it's fine. Explore the auto translate function, it's pretty much a big help.
Iirc English is a part of the high school curriculum in JP so most Japanese players will be able to read English to some degree. Auto-TL is better tho XD

This scene from Amadeus is the perfect metaphor for the culture shock involved. I played WoW for six years and was astonished even while in neck-deep at the level of toxic BS that was normalized. People who are just coming over to FF now: we've been gaslit by a company that doesn't care enough to have higher standards and enforce them. They think it's part of the charm. Need to inform them via our wallets that *it's not*. It just sucks. I have a lot of stories like everyone else about how people in FF are super cool. I might actually consider a second main job as a healer because I am not nearly as afraid of being harassed with really not much recourse the way I was in WoW. Play games that improve your mental health, not destroy it.
Healers don't face much harassment unless you're clearly and consistently doing a mechanic wrong. Most groups will assume the tank fucked up somehow, instead.
If you're unsure about trying healer my advice would be to try and make friends with a few others and ask if they'll help you learn a few dunges as a new hlr. Everyone's real nice, and if they know you need help they will help! I'm a hlr main myself (ast) so I know it can be a bit intimidating at first, but I encourage you to try it out!
Oooh, I hope you'll try healer! I was terrified to try it at first. (I never played WoW, but I did play support in LoL a lot and... Yeah, scarring.) But healing can be really fun. Also, I think we can all agree that AST has just the prettiest spell effects and LB3. And what is a job if not the aesthetic. ;)
I was never very scared of healing in WoW. I find it fun and no one has ever really harassed me for it. Tanking, though... No. I will never tank. I have never tried. I will never try. Hell, even DPS intimidates me.

As an long time WoW player, I still sense the built up toxicity in myself when someone stands in fire while healing or repeatedly messes up what seems like an obvious mechanic. But the kindness I have seen has slowly been seeping the venom from my heart :)
I stop rezzing the person when they die immediately after being picked up. In the end, there are 2 other players who want to go through the dungeon in a reasonable amount of time and some players just play so bad that rezzing them would amount to a few seconds of gameplay for them and a dps loss for everyone else.
My WoW experience: Playing tank and getting kicked because I was waiting for everyone else to be ready before pulling the boss. My FFXIV experience: Playing tank and me and the healer dancing together while waiting for the rest of the group to catch up. I've never really been a fan of directly comparing two games to each other. But by the twelve is this community a lot less angry at everything.
I've had exactly one toxic interaction in this game: A guy who never went to get his Paladin job stone was upset because I was playing Dancer. Why? Because it was "Shit DPS". What caused this? He saw I was playing Dancer. I contacted the support desk and I basically got a "Yeah you're not supposed to be that way. Sorry that happened."

In WoW, if you pull a boss and the healer and dps aren't ready, they're expected to cope. In FFXIV, I've seen runs where a tank pulls the boss, realizes no one is following him in and and when he asked: 'Uh, team?' they responded with: 'Sprout is watching cutscene. We're waiting for it to finish.' he apologized profusely and honestly hadn't noticed. He didn't die, but he did feel bad about pulling without checking if everyone was ready. No one expects a ready check in a 4 man dungeon, but a quick 'is everyone here and ready to go' glance is always nice. It makes me beam with pride and joy every time a group waits the 20-30 seconds it takes for the intro of the final dungeon boss to finish. Some take a bit longer, but I have never seen anyone complain about having to wait. I have seen tanks pull a boss even though they knew damn well not everyone was there yet, but even in those cases, a group is quick to call them on that and say: None of that! They deserve to watch their cutscene and we don't have the right to rush them.
I loveee this community, I've never encountered anyone mad at a wipe. Usually it's "oops srry didn't heal fast enough" or "dang man forgot tank stance" and a response is always along the lines of "ya dude it's cool, been there" , so nice ;;
I remember back in the old ARR days where everyone in the dungeon was pretty quiet and only spoke up if we did mechanics wrong. These days, I'm showered with hellos and ggs. Not only has the game evolved, the community has as well.
When I first got into some "higher" level dungeons where mechanics are less forgiving, I died and promptly tried to explain that I wasn't dogshit and just having a bad day and I'm sorry. The group stopped the dungeon and had to explain that its totally ok, and we were actually doing just fine, they all patted me on the back... I was so shocked by their kindness, still am to this day.
I try to do that when I see someone apologize in chat for "screwing up" or whatever. I'm usually the one apologizing, so when I see someone else having a rough go of it, I try to cheer them on so they don't get discouraged. I was doing a dungeon with 2 other sprouts & a veteran tank and all three of us sprouts died in the middle of the final boss & got locked out of the battle area. We stood there & watched the tank kick butt. We all apologized & then gave commendations to the tank & they were super nice about us all dying and gave some suggestions. It could have been so much worse, but everyone was just helpful.
bro, i ran an extreme one time and it was 7 first timers and one guy who done the trail before, he explained the mechanics to us for like 45 minutes, he was such a nice dude
I'm not a wow refugee, but duuude I was in shock when I started playing. I'm a WHM sprout and the amount of support received and patience people have is amazing. I'm level 47 now and I've only had one slightly negative player that said "oh god" when I got a bit overwhelmed and let someone die lol. If I die to a mechanic they'll take the time to explain it before the next instance. And I'll still get commendations and "good job dude" after the dungeons even though I died twice and costed them time. Can't imagine that in any other game. None.
When I started playing WHM, I got really overwhelmed in my first dungeon as one, to the point of crying because I felt like it was too much for me; the players were around me, waiting for my character to move again while I was drying my tears, and took it really slow because they understood without a word that it was my first time playing WHM, it was incredibly sweet of them
It makes me happy to know that I can watch the cutscenes for the pivotal story dungeons and the party will be completely fine with me watching it. I love the story so far (about to finish stormblood’s plot) and I can’t wait to see the rest!

Man, the culture surrounding FFXIV is so cool. Me and 3 other guys were running the Midgardsomr dungeon and we died 2 times. Instead of people arguing or complaining, we all played it off with some jokes. We didn't blame anyone despite there being a weaker link in the team. (Our healer was getting used to his new Scholar layout) We celebrated rather than complained. The guy said sorry and we 3 insisted everything was cool and the boss was pretty tricky to deal with. I love that the fact that we did somewhat poorly on the boss but kept our spirits high made the run so much less frustrating and even more fun because it was a nice change from just laying waste to other bosses. If you haven't yet, get this damn game.
I'm not a WoW refugee but back when I first started, I decided to play as conjurer and god was I constantly scared of being blamed for the tank dying or party wiping. So I kind of panic healed. I think the first time I really messed up was when I continuously fell off of the platform due to landslides in the Navel. I was really scared because the group had to wipe whenever I fell because I'm the healer and after maybe 3-4 falls and a number of apologies, one of the dps gave me some pointers on how to not fall. After about two more tries, we cleared as I finally got the hang of it. The group was super nice to me while I was trying to get the hang of the landslides. I also got over panic healing when the tank in an early dungeon told me I could dps when he wasn't below like 50%. I can safely say I'm a decent white mage now thanks to the people who gave me pointers when I was new.
This happened to me too, about the panic healing and all. As a long time healer in RPGs, I always took players dying to heart, but everyone in this game just stays chill and try again. Sometimes I even tear up with their kindness.
@@SwitchZettoYeah I also had the fear of being blamed for deaths, and even now as a player who's been around for a while I still worry that someone is going to be upset that I didn't heal fast enough or that I didn't immediately revive them, but most of the time they either stay silent and wait patiently for my swiftcast or go "Oops my bad" and the patience is amazing even after seeing it so much over these last few years
I'm just finishing up Heavensward now, and have only come across one player who was horrible in that entire time. It was Sohm Al, and the tank was chain pulling despite not knowing the dungeon, and caused a wipe. This bard pipes up calling him a WoW refugee who doesn't know how to play, and then apologised for snapping as he'd had people causing wipes all week. Then left. So not only are there very few toxic players, even the ones who snap apologise sometimes!
I only been playing a little over two weeks. As soon as the MSQ said i had to go do Sastasha I legit broke out in a cold sweat and nearly had a anxiety attack. I'm playing a gladiator because i want to try out a paladin later so i was tanking. The first couple of pulls were funky because i didn't notice my iron will buff turned off when we entered the dungeon. i switched it back on and things went much smoother. It was actually fun tanking it. The group was very supportive and actually gave me a few helpful pointers. Imagine my surprise when i didn't get cussed or kicked if i missed an add pick up. I'll never be comfortable as a speed run tank but i think i might like tanking in the future.
Yeah you will. You'll eventually get to a point where doing those dungeons is second nature. You'll learn what you can and cannot pull. You'll be wall-pulling in no time. It's no big deal. And I am a trashcan of a tank.
Tanking is easy as long as you remember your primary job as a tank is mob control, as long you have all the mobs attention trust your team to kill them and keep you alive. Also don’t stand in AOEs.
Nah man, you’ll be wall pulling soon, if not already. Don’t let your anxiety get the better of you and if you’re ever in doubt just ask the healer if they are ok with you trying it for the first time. 99.99%of them will tell you knock yourself out. Let ‘er rip, fellow tank!
Honestly, sprouts are adorable 😭💕 got Suzaku after a looooong time and 3 dps and my co-healer were new. When the platform colors came up, I simply said, "watch out for the tether". They watched it alright, and stood on the colors in the order they'd explode 😭😭 I couldn't help but laugh and say "oh my goodness!!! They at least watched the tether😂😂😂"
I just started to try my hand and a healing class, said it in the duty roulette of "hey I'm still learning the mechanics on this class. Bare with me." and tank went a little slower and didn't pull huge groups. It was just nice to be learning with support.
Not sure how toxic this is but... If a healer says that to me but handles the small pulls okay, and I can see they're DPSing I'll start pulling more just to push them a little. If we wipe we wipe I don't mind, but I feel as a veteren healer the best way to get more comfortable doing bigger pulls is to just do it once you got the basics down.
@@miamha Meanwhile I did Paglth'an the first time and they pulled literally every mob until the end areas and I literally about had a panic attack cause I was up at 5am in the morning trying not to puke (but needed a distraction). The ONLY reason I didn't mind is cause I am a healer of several years at this point, but if that happened to a sprout I'd be so upset for them :(
@@LithFox Well technically you would not easily see sprouts in the latest dungeon. It is very usual to pull wall to wall in high end dungeons lvl80s since by that point you are supposed to be at ease with your class etc. You can still see people who might have skipped expansions or bought their classes but then its up to them to practice. Surely though If I was a sprout I would kindly ask to slow down and let the people know I bought a class, lets say, and still learning it. Most that could happen either they joke and kick me or we stay and clear happily and slow.
@@miamha I know this comment isn't exactly fresh (thank the TH-cam algorithm for that) but I just want to say that, as long as you do any such ramping up in a gradual way, I wouldn't consider it toxic at all really. If both you and the healer seem to be very comfortable, it doesn't hurt to go a little further, perhaps "chain pulling" rather than wall to wall (that is, moving on to pack #2 before pack #1 is completely dead). There are of course contextual things like "maybe don't do as much of that if you have a BLM, since they can't really do damage *and* move a lot," but by and large if your newbie healer seems to have a very solid grasp, you can probably push a *little* more. Perhaps ask just before a boss "is this a good pace? Seems like you've got a very good handle on things." Communication is almost always best!
@@playmary123 I don't even think it's *possible* to see a sprout in something like Paglth'an, but I find most folks are quite willing to be patient if you speak up or the game says "one or more party members have yet to complete this duty." I tend to give people the option of pointers (if I think I can give good ones, that is!) but avoid just leaping straight into them.
When I rush for the exit after a run it's not intended as being rude, it's usually because I'm embarrassed about dying 17 times because many mechanics are super opaque.

@@HiddenEvilStudios I agree with this. Players who macro their greetings or apologies or whatever, I typically find less sincere. It feels like they couldn't be bothered to say something relevant to the situation, so they just make a homogeneous automated message instead and it feels a bit lazy and condescending. I prefer they didn't say anything at all rather than that, tbh. But that's just me.
@@Xylarxcode Keep in mind though that not every FF14 player has a keyboard at hand. I heard many console players have macros for the basics (like "hi" or "gg") bc. the PS keyboard software is a nightmare and they don't want to be super rude by not greeting at all.
This was litterally me when I migrated from wow to FFXIV. I was so bad at tanking and afraid to watch the cutscenes in the dungeon and the people were like: Don't worry. Watch the cutscenes. This game has an amazing story, enjoy it.
I did some content yesterday where me (dps) and a Tank were new to it. In the end, there was like a Sword on the ground and I thought we need to attack it since everyone stopped to dps the boss. I accidently clicked the sword (it wasn't an enemy) was about to post in chat that I'm sorry but then a freaking QTE starts and I was mashing out of my mind. That was the most insane and epic thing so far and everyone said: nice safe! and WD! I have legit no idea what happened but I got a lot of commendations and told to enjoy the story. Very wholesome, legit almost cried because of everything.

Nearly 17 years of WoW, dungeons have always been a bit scary. Even if you know it, a screw up can bring the salt. I’ve never tanked in my life. Ever. It always freaked me out. The idea of keeping agro, positioning, staying alive, etc., just gave me anxiety. Then, came FF. I started playing 2-3 days ago. We’re talking maybe 10 hours total played? I just really like Paladin, so decided I’d go gladiator. Besides, just playing solo, so nbd. But, I got to the point in the main questline where it forces you to run a dungeon. And I was the tank. It was fantastic! No stress, just “Hey all, new here” “Me too” “Kk”. Three sprouts, one vet- she guided us through, pulled extra packs when I could handle it but was going slow, and all were happy at the end! I can’t express what a great job FF does to teach you your class, role, and the Hall of Novices to practice role activities- it’s night and day difference from WoW. Not sure, but it really feels like this may be the actual WoW-killer for me!
In my experience, this is mostly true. I've had only one asshole who was mean when I slid off an edge and was rude when I asked about a boss mechanic. He annoyed me enough to drop out of the run. Everyone else has been super chill. We had a tank in Aurum Vale who forgot to put on level appropriate armor (leveling new class), died super consistently, and I just asked him what level his armor was cause he was dying super fast. He saw his mistake, apologized profusely, and I just asked him to take small pulls and see if it would work. The rest of the team was fine with it, and we just slow rolled the dungeon. Folks tend to be very chill on dungeons.
My first few dungeons were great & then I got a real cranky healer in one. I am new to gaming in general FFXIV in particular so I didn't understand all the mechanics & kept dying. He chewed me out & I was so bummed I just shut off the game (later I felt bad I left the other DPS & Tank in there alone) & didn't play for a few months because all my confidence was shot. I've been playing again for the last few months & have watched some tips videos & read up on dungeons so I feel more confident, but also everyone has been super chill & helpful since then, so I figure that guy was a one-off. I now tend to start dungeons with a "Hello" and a "Tips are welcome" type message. I've gotten some great tips along the way that have helped me be a better player.

For those who are new to FFXIV. the FFXIV community is very nice when it comes to helping each other out. This is coming from someone who has been playing FFXIV since Heavenward. Sure, you might bump into someone in the game that is harsh and sweaty but that is rare (at least for me) I remember playing the Raid The Orbonne Monastery in Stormblood for the first time and remember i was fighting i think it was the boss where you have to pick up Shield and sword perks to help protect yourself and break your teammates out of the crystal. During that boss fight, i was a tank and was going to do my role on aggroing on of the 3 giant adds so my party can kill him, i messed up twice got us killed and Party C tank was talking smack to me for not doing my job well saying i was a bad tank and other harsh things, the parties saw this and Party A, B and his Party were defending me by talking back to him saying that i'm new and he is here to learn like everyone else did. i was just there standing doing nothing while these parties were straight going at him. it took me 2 more times but we ended up beating the boss and moving on and clearing it. i got my parties player commendations that day and getting complements on i was a good tank. To this day, i'll never forget that moment. best community in a game i have every played in.

Liberals love acting like conservatism is about bringing us into a dark age when really we just want to be taxed less or at least more fairly like a flat tax, unborn babies from being killed, and to stop brainwashing's our children into communism or into a victim mentality. We are sick of critical race theory, we are sick of being told we have to take and experimental vaccine and we are sick of elites trying to take our guns away, etc. Essentially we just want to be left alone. These principles have nothing to do with going back in history, its has to do with maintaining what works. Historically leftism is really what has ended more civilization's than conservatism. Communism, Over migration, Hedonism, etc. The Elites are overwhelmingly Liberal and the middle class tends to be more conservative. Look at blue collar workers in America such as construction workers, welders, private farmers, etc they are nearly all conservative. Literally the backbone of any Country is conservative in nature because traditions and principles are what keep their families successful for years to come but they will still embrace new innovations and technology all the same as long as they fit within the morals ethics and principles of conservatism.
As a sprout that fortunately didn't play wow for too long i find this absolutely hilarious. People are so nice. I was afk for like 5mins and when i got back this dude was trying to give me a companion. Just waiting for me when i got with the trade screen up. I was really confused at first at this display of kindness AND patience and i still feel bad about keeping him waiting :)
I think this goes for everyone new to the game. Not just WoW refugees. I know me and a friend was confused as hell with the commendations when we first did dungeons.
When I started playing back in May I would literally look up every dungeon and trial before doing them as to not go in blind, yes I messed at times but never had one bad group the whole time, if I didn't know how to do something it was just explained. The reason I looked up everything because it was fear of being kicked or belittled by the group. I encountered none of this and so many times after a dungeon or trial would end someone would say enjoy the rest of the MSQ. Honestly its a great community.
I always look stuff up because I don't want to drag the group down. And half the time i end up in a group of all noobs and I end up guiding people through boss battles I've never done before. It never hurts to be prepared. Even if nobody's going to bite your head off for making a mistake, it's still better to make as few as possible.
I'm the same way, I have major dungeon anxiety from my WoW days so nearly every dungeon or trial I run, I'm looking up the mechanics and writing them down so I don't get people upset.
I do this too. As a former WoW player (left after Mists, been playing FF for 5 years now) it was drummed in to you that you must research boss mechanics before entering a dungeon. Still do it even now, more out of habit. But I kinda feel for sprouts and when I look back on this habit, I do rather think it spoils the enjoyment and wonder of the game for new players. Imagine looking forward to going to watch a movie and then being told you have to watch spoiler clips beforehand. Don't get me wrong, I get the 'be prepared' mentality - but I do sometimes think being pressured into not going blind into a dungeon and experiencing it as it was intended is just peer pressure to get things done quickly.
Watching a video of a fight before doing it for the first time legitimately spoils the whole experience for me. People will also only expect that if you're doing Savage/Ultimate raids in a public group, so there's no reason to reduce your enjoyment for most content.
@@Furnado_ I don't like video guides, I only find written guides. Personally, I don't find enjoyment in walking into dungeons and raids blind. It terrifies me. I have more fun when I have knowledge of what to expect vs when I have no idea what I'm doing. I guess people just have different ideas of enjoyment, lol.
I keep having this same thought whenever I think about my experience playing wow so im sharing it here: Being so lovingly welcomed into ffxiv after years of being a WoW player was like finding my soulmate after a miserable breakup. Seriously, the moment I say "Heyo, I'm new" everyone just says "okay cool" and the more experienced folks are immediately like "here's how you do this one, try doing this and then that when we get to this point :)" and are so patient and kind, and it actually makes me excited to play the fkin game and join parties! I feel safe here ;w; Much love to every ffxiv player for the wonderful community you've all made.
Reading comments from former WoW players makes me so happy. Welcome to the community! I hate y’all had to deal with such hostility before, but this is the only online game I can think of where people tend to not grief newbies as much as other games and are genuine with others. Almost ten years playing this game and I’m still amazed when people give random tips and help when I’m struggling with my rotation or even playing Mahjong. This community is what keeps me coming back every time.
I play on a server where I don’t speak their language, so I just use emotes like some kind of mime. Bow at the end of an instance, kneel and put my head on the floor when making mistakes, cheer on when we wipe (and I think I’m not the reason why we wiped, lol). I’ve had people respond back with emotes. It’s fun!
have a look through and figure out how to use the autotranslate system in chat, it's extremely handy and no matter what language you or they speak, it will make sense to everyone :)
I always loved the silent communications in this game. Even if I'm on English servers, I still appreciate those silent interactions because I'd be really awkward if I have to do random chatters out of nowhere.

I can’t help but think of the time I got Ala Mhigo as a roulette with a bunch of first-timers. One asked me (DRK) to go slow, and I joked “No promises” (I go slow anyway for the healer to recover after every encounter). After elaborating that it was a bad joke, I checked if the group was doing all right, to the point the healer thanked me for both that and going slow. After wiping to Zenos yae Galvus, we beat him with a vengeance. In short, I’m glad I joined such a friendly community.
The most shocking thing to me was how patient everyone is. The cutscenes are the biggest example. Towards the beginning of my ffxiv career i was apologizing for making people wait while i watched but i can say that every single time I apologized i was told it’s okay and that i absolutely should be watching the cutscenes. No one has any patience in wow. I have come to the realization that it’s because ffxiv doesn’t waste the player’s time like wow. Wipe on the final boss? No worries here’s a port. Haukke manor has you run all the way back? Oh no, use your hearth to return to the front. It’s almost like the game is designed to be fun?! But that’s just crazy talk right?
Best community ever. Went from another mmo where I had dungeon anxiety, to this which makes me excited to play new content. So far only one trash experience in the 3 months I’ve been playing. Those are some great odds!
As a healer main, I tend to offer sprout tanks advice if I see them screwing up or making mistakes. You can usually tell the former WoW players because they think honest advice is meant as an attack, but it's always so great when they realize that most people in the FF community want to be helpful. I had a brand new DRK tank who I offered a bit of advice to during the run, then who stayed after the roulette was done and asked me what all he'd done wrong and could do better since he'd never tanked before. We chatted for almost a half hour about things and now he's pulling great tanking runs.
The few trash experiences I've had In XIV have unanimously resulted in the team voting the problem player out and going on to succeed without them. Feels VERY good.
@@WithASideOfTibbs Generally people don't get mad at people with a flower or sprout above their heads. And to some extend even less skilled players, since you can tell who they are. Almost, if not all extremely experienced players use a DPS meter outside of the game to see performance of the group. Hence why we can tell who is casual and who is just new. In any case 95% wont discrimminate and wont be rude. They'll be helpful. But you CAN meet a toxic experienced player, especially the 1 Ultimate snobs that think they own the place, while us 3ults and week 1 people just chill.

This is the only game where I had a big freakin’ symbol to let people know I was new and everybody was happy to help me. Now I’m in my first year Im leading new sprouts in dungeons and I feel like a school teacher leading kids on a field trip and I kinda like it!
As a WoW refugee who healed Whhhhhoooooo boi is healer so less toxic in Ffxiv. I picked up Arcanist so I have a dps and a healer at the same level but even when the healing jumped in complexness it wasn't toxic from the others. I've only healed the main story duty's to around lvl43 and the only issue I had is with one tank who pulled the entire room and he took so much damage me spamming my quickest healing spell did nothing. No salt after the wipe blaming the healer for the impossible, just the tank readjusting pull sizes to reasonable levels. Much more pleasant than anything in wow that would come from that.
Just as a note, unless the tank or you were undergeared, or he was not using his cooldowns right, it's basically impossible to run into unhealable pulls, there might have been something you could have done to raise your output. I have not started Scholar yet, so I don't know specifics there, but it's something very common with beginner white mages that will spam Cure 1 because it's technically their fastest cast(and to conserve mana) not realizing that it massively drops their healing output per GCD compared to using Cure 2. But like I said having not optimal gear on both the healer and tank can throw a wrench in that calculation and especially level 50 and below dungeons can be cutting it very close with big pulls even if everyone plays optimally, because you just have so few buttons at that level. I just wanted to let you know that you maybe have some unused potential you could be looking into, but generally tanks will have no issues with scaling down a bit if they see healers struggling.
@@Whosimon Early level Scholar does indeed have trouble healing. It isn't until 50+ where the class really comes online in a meaningful way; until then, it's way rougher than the other two.
@@Whosimon Actually some lower level dungeons are scaled strangely so that literally everyone is made of paper. this problem goes away at higher levels.
avoid using physick unless you absolutely have to ( no mp) even when you have to heal fast is better to use adloquium if you have it. If you need for a quick spell you can use swiftcast + the spell you need for insta cast, provided that you can keep the tank alive ( alse is better to leave it to insta raise the dead tank and get back on track) For the most part use the fairy cooldowns during pulls once you get them + adloquium. Soon at lvl45 you ll see a big difference just by the use of eatherflow aka lustrate
Met a baby BLM refugee in a roulette, myself and the rest of the party happily explained what questions they had about their role and cleared some of their fears about dungeons in the game. I hope they're having fun still!
Your average FF14 dungeon: Obligatory naked miq'uote. "Tank stance, please." DPS at the front of the dungeon getting carried because you can't kick them because the tank keeps pulling everything. "TANK STANCE PLEASE." Healer not attacking and only using Cure 3. -wipe- "Standing in orange is bad, mmkay?" "Come on, tank, PLEASE, get into tank stance." Somehow you finish the dungeon. GGs tyfp The one DPS doing all the work gets no comms and the other won the items with need rolls.
this is horrifying accurate... i'd like to add something: 8 player instance = at least one male Rhoegadyn as WHM and the only visible clothing is a leopard panty (they would use a string if they could!!)
Sprouts always make me smile whenever I see them. Because I was one once as well, and I remember the feeling of being blown away by the game, being scared of my first dungeon (mild performance anxiety, as it was my first true MMO experience with party dungeon mechanics), and then slowly realizing that I wasn’t going to be picked apart or judged for failing at first. The lessons I’ve learned from players who cared enough to sit me down and chat me through the upcoming boss when I said “first time, new here” was so heartwarming, and I sincerely hope to pay it forward to others like myself.
Was doing roulette with friend the other day. Got a tank doing a dungeon for the first time. Our hraler is great so we said "big pulls buddy" and they followed suit. At the end they said how cool it was to fight like 10+ mobs at once and not die. Feels good every time.
as a wow refugee I never see anyone say anything. I havent experienced any toxicity but ive completed the first three dungeons and no one said a word in them, except for two ggs in the third one.
I've never played WoW, but I did recently end up healing for a group of WoW Refugees in their first ever dungeon. On no less than three occasions while giving them tips they broke down from how nice and helpful I was. When I told them you could press tab to target something they freaked out like, "You won't get yelled at and kicked for tab targeting???"
I was TAB targeting in WoW for three expansions and in one I got ahead of curve (highest difficulty achievement for raid) so kinda dont understard it. I would sooner laugh at someone targeting with mouse.
I had a run as heals with 3 sprouts, it was the last dungeon for ShB (the really good one before fighting you know who) and DrEx for me. And they started talking about WoW. So I vowed to myself to keep them alive. And just let them enjoy the content. The bosses of these sometimes tend to kill parties if you don't pay attention. Mainly, It was nice chatting to them as well. Nice people tbh! Regardless of how it seems or may appear, gamers in general are nice to each other regardless of what game we spent the most time in. We all just want a good time in the end after all.
This is so true. I ran my first dungeon yesterday as healer (first time healing since 2014 or so) and I couldn't believe how relaxed and chill everyone was. FFxiv is a breath of fresh air.
did World of Darkness raid the other day. Healer apologized for their mom being distracting, lead up to to them complaining about not liking their mother, a few other party members chastising the healer for saying such a thing, and then 1 boss later, apologizing to the healer for stepping over bounds, and not knowing the situation. I was like. O_O wtf? is this real life? lol
I remember how mean and hostile people were when I first started playing WoW. I had a friend who got me into it and she raided regularly so I was lucky to have her give me pointers and advice on how to not piss people off in a dungeon or raid. Then WoW went to shit and I found myself playing FFXIV and so far I have yet to find a toxic player 70 levels in.

One of the biggest things I've noticed that Sprouts (especially WoW refugees) are surprised by is that they can actually need on gear without fear of being yelled at. xD And greed on gear just to greed. I was the same way when I first switched from WoW to FF14 in 2017.
I still sometimes only greed on non class gear because I don't want to take it from someone because I chose need, but now I do indeed feel like I can need on gear for my class without feeling bad because of people like you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you
what i really like doing sometimes is to just start typing and talking in the chat, usually about me being a dummy and almost dying, or how we turned the mini boss into swiss cheese. i guess it eases the party's nerves or it opens the door to be a lil more relaxed cus then everyone starts getting social and vocal, its really fun!
Good Christ the reactions from the the WOW people make me glad i never got into it. Like "I'm was so indoctrinated into accepting nonstop abuse and hatred as normal after 15 years that when someone was nice for .5 seconds i cried for two hours"
I just ran my first 2 dungeons today, one as a DPS one as a tank. After my tank run, the other players thanked me and gave me commendations... I was so confused. I had to google what was up with the commendations. The culture shock coming from WoW is real, but so welcomed!
Makes you realize just how abusive your relationship with WoW truly was lol. I still get nervous when I tank a dungeon because I expect to be screamed at and/or have the party disband anytime I fuck something up lol.

I haven't moved from WoW, but I do have a story about my experience and a time I was surprised by the community. I was doing Titan for the first time - ages ago now - but it was either 2 or 3 sprouts out of 4, and we wiped so many times for so many different reasons, but the person or two who knew how to do it was(/were) really patient, and we finished it - even if we did only have

What caused me the greatest confusion was actually being the last person standing in the second to last boss melee in one dungeon. My free company companion, level 80 black mage, died (he had so much better gear than me). The tank died. The healer died. I'm right in the very middle of the melee doing my sub standard don't quite know what I should be doing lower level Black mage rotation and I'm alive. There was literally a stunned silence from everyone else for a whole minute after I finished off the mob. I said "What do I do now?" "Anything you like - no just wait, we'll be right there" was the private message from Free company guy, who now thinks I'm super fantastic (nice of him, but totally incorrect) and praises me to all the others. I still have no real idea what happened there. Except, sometimes I've found, as Black mage, that standing right in the middle works better than bobbing around the outer edges (usually not in dungeons though) - have no pretensions to wanting to be a tank and the responsibility of healer would crush me. The huge difference I find with FFXiV from any other MMO I've played is how important it is to know your rotation and skills. Other games it's useful, but not vital. In this game, being fat fingered, nervous or losing track of the order of combat skills is usually fatal. Getting flustered is fatal. Let's just say, I'm familiar with the grouting in floor tiles in most dungeons.
As a new healer, I feel this! I never even considered playing healer in any other mmo until I started FF14.

I will always commend someone for being an absolute trainwreck in a dungeon. It's one part pity, one part passive aggressive. If nothing else you tried your best and were entertaining.

helps when the devs bake rewards for being nice and discourage bad behavior into the game. just like all the speeders who slow down when they see cops or when the gov subsidizes tax credits for investing or buying certain things. sure some people are nice straight up, or dont break any rules no matter what... but there's a whole lot of wiggle room for the majority of players.

It really confused me and I love it so much. A lot of people are nice, even on EU servers. I didn't play WoW before, only LoL (which already has one of the top 10 worst communities ever I guess) and some other MMO's, playing stuff since 1998. Started Ff14 2 months ago for the first time and it still baffles me how nice almost everyone is. Of course there are still idiots, especially in the PvP Roulette bs, but they are a clear minority

I don't really play FFXIV, but that is because I don't have time to devote to MMOs these days. Back when I did play, early on, I was playing archer and kiting around something that was WAY out of my league in one of those 'popup quests' and a random Lalafel healer came over and started backing me up. 5 minutes later, it was me, that healer, and 2 black mages just going to town on this thing until it finally died.
As s tank I always make sure to compliment my healer unless they really, unforgivably dropped the ball. I just love the FFXIV community's team-work focused mentality of "thanks for your part!" rather than WoW's "HoW coUlD yOU fAiL ME!?!?".

This literally happened to me two nights ago. Just started as a healer (now a lvl43 White Mage) and started a dungeon which I've never played (one of the optional ones w/ the ant colony). The tank was a little too aggressive w/ pulling, and between that and my figuring out where best to place myself as enemies aggro'd, I ended up seeing him killed, quickly followed by everyone else. Before I could apologize, the tank said pretty much "I'll pull less next time" and everyone else was like "it's all good / no worries" regarding the party being killed. Sure enough, when we all respawned the tank pulled less and we cleared the rest of the dungeon. I got two commendations. =D
Bro I freaked out last night I just started a week or so ago, I was in the great library I think dungeon at the end all 3 ppl were like hey you did great, and way to watch out for that and all 3 gave me the commendation marks it was my first time in there. I literally thought I was being trolled. So far every dungeon I have been in from LVL 15 now at level 67 everyone has said hi and no long drawn out explanations just simple on this fight do this and this and I have only died twice due to me not paying attention and moving fast enough. Coming from 15 years of wow I feel like I did when I first played Everquest.

You will usually find people explaining strats to sprouts for dungeons that actually are a bit harder than "dont stand in orange". Which is the case for most "postgame" dungeons of each expansion, as well as several as the lvl 65+ ones.
Not necessarly right away, but usually if by any chance you wipe or die they will explain what's going on. It's not necessarly out of niceness but also for actually wanting to finish the dungeon :P

Most WoW refugees I've encountered in dungeons are always begging not to be kicked or constantly saying they're sorry for not dpsing enough... I feel really sorry for what they had to endure.

same, had a run of The Navel last night in which all 3 others were first timers, one fell off the side (of course) and was SO worried we be mad and apologizing profusely, I did my best to reassure them and congratulate them when we cleared. But it's kinda sad to see how traumatized some of the new players are from their past experiences in other games.
... FFXIV dungeons are WoW Normals and Heroics. No one gives a single damn how much DPS someone is doing in Normals and Heroics unless they're afking. No one is "enduring" anything by doing some leveling dungeons in WoW. Also most new players are not going to be running ACT yet and aren't going to know if they're underperforming or not in the first place to even bother apologizing. Weird post.
@@Ventorath i agree. people are polarizing the games when they and its communities aren't too far apart. main difference being squeenix actually monitors chat and bots, a side effect is people not using gamer words out of fear of ban in group content. granted thats a good thing to keep the toxicity out which is nice, but people tend to guise their toxicity in ff14 with direct passive aggressiveness. theres still buttloads of assholes in both games, they just go about it differently
It's so heart warming. Three years ago when I was first joining, i was determined to run extreme leviathan (was also a sprout that time, i just looked up mechanics, and video guide). So i queued for it. The party consisted of all sprouts. We wiped too many times. I was a tank and I gave tips, feedbacks and everything that was taught to me, as I havent cleared them myself either. No leaving, no blaming, only "Again" "we will get it this time" "you are doing great" Literally the last run because we would run out of time if we fail one more time.
The sheer amount of cheers and caplock screamings when we dealt the final strike to boss, was completely overwhelming. No special loot that run but that feeling alone, is worth it. 7 commendations and 8 proud sprouts left the trial victorious.
This is what it means to be a Warrior of Light.
And after three years, and looking back, you now know why that party was full of sprouts. Haha! You hadn't yet learned that most people in the NA servers usually use the party finder to form groups for extremes on the NA servers.

Some of my best mentor roullete runs were when I got something like Shiva Extreme with 7 sprouts and had to teach em to clear it xD and we did.
As a recent sprout I can confirm this is very true, people being nice is not expected and when it happens confusion ensues because for a previous wow player if someone is being nice to you they are probably trying to scam you.

Most toxic thing I’ve seen in a dungeon is someone saying ‘bad bad tank’ once. It’s a relief.
In general I think people in FFXIV overstate how friendly it is but then I see sprouts who are terrified of letting know they're new (even hiding the sprout) and it's just... what hell experience have you had before?
@@jreyes9005 I remember playing as a Tank before. The only thing I had said to be once was 'Good job, but get some better gear for next time.' It wasn't toxic nor did it sound like an insult.
WoW refugees are people that just escaped an extremely abusive relationship. The genuine kindness from FFXIV players AND staff, it can be very confusing and even overwhelming for the refugees. Be gentle.

i was literally blown away that i didnt get kicked for dying in a new dungeon at level 20
It's not just that. We wow players (i never played FFIV but im looking into it and considering it), are both abused and abuser. It's an abusive relationship going both ways.
But some of us, like me, grown so used to it, believe it to be so normal and usual, we're confused and uncomfortable when it isnt this way.
Example, i tried running quite high level M+ key recently. Party leader turns out was very bad at his class (told me later he didnt play in 10 years). We fail miserably at 2nd boss, twice, reach conclusion it's impossible for our party to finish this, let alone in time. At this point, im sitting there, excited for shitshow that will unfold. This. I literally wiped my group as I was new to the dungeon and yet people were still praising me for good heals that the run was awesome. I got two commendations as well. It was crazy. Haha after it was finished I remember just sitting at my desk very confused. Other communities, WoW especially, are just incredibly toxic.

Honestly, most of the internet was nice before 4chan; that's one of the few places online in the 16+ years of internet before it that encouraged trolling and abusing anonymity. I was so shocked when Star Wars the Old Republic turned in to a mess of toxicity. It just didn't exist as a cultural thing in MMOs before 2010.

This was literally me for like the first month. It was pure culture shock. Decades of WoW and first person shooters only to find out that not everyone online is horrible, and so I don't have to be either. It's like being born and raised in an evil Empire or warmongering culture only to find out there is another way to live. Like, it's hard to adapt and even a little jarring.

I've done this a few times. The alterative is coming across them right as they die and reviving them. Being able to switch class on the fly makes these kinds of moments possible.
Bruh I did that on PLD just the other day up in the crypt in Eastern Thanalan, saw a sprout about to die while I was waiting for a FATE to spawn for a hunt and just turned and clemency'd the little lalafell. Healed him so hard I immediately pulled aggro off the skeleton as he gets a heal about 20 times the size of his HP bar.
This is one of the things that made me uncomfortable during the switch. I can't have a pug be nice to me! If they're nice to me, then I'll start to care about them. Can you imagine what kind of chaos that'll bring?! I might actually make friends and be sociable! God, what a nightmare.

Used to play WoW, tried playing as a tank and the first dungeon I did we wiped because I was still learning. Was heavily insulted for several minutes and then kicked from the group. Never tried tanking again
Switched to FFXIV, randomly picked gladiator as my starting class not realizing it was a tank. Messed up in the first dungeon. Party said it was all good, gave me some pointers and we cleared on second try. Now a level 77 Gunbreaker and I absolutely love being a tank. Even when I mess up at high levels, everyone is always super chill or will give a quick rundown of whatever mechanic I messed up. God, I love this game and community.
Can feel you. Actually really scared when i started tanking as DRK the other day. Did a few of the starting dungeons and people were cool. Got to Brayflox's and got really worried because of all the mobs. Guy literally spent about five minutes giving me tips and saying he'd keep up on my heals. Amazing folks and actually starting to enjoy tanking

@@WhiskeySins I honestly think my experinces in FFXI is the reason I'm so chill in every game I've played since. Nothing has actually felt as hardcore and rewarding as those years I spent in a very slow engine with lots of programmed in tediousness that didnt push players into a cash shop. It was hard for the sake of being hard, because people wanted a hard game to play. I genuinely dont thinkt he current generation of MMO players would survive in a game as hard as FFXI was when it launched, or for most of its lifespan. On one hand I'm glad MMOs are more accessible and anyone can play them... But I do also kind of miss my hardcore little nerd squad I put together to handle the territory control points and fight back the tides of the beastmen to keep player control of the continent. I havnt really encountered a system like that again.
@@emanmodnar2 The trip to Jueno as new player was an accomplishment lol, I played FFXI for 6-7 years, I remember the community was decent, but FFXIV is more relaxed as there is no NM claiming and camping. You make way more friends there than FFXIV though.
So, first dungeon I’ve ever done on ffxiv yesterday and - they helped me tank. They actually welcomed me, told me my rotations, what spells and buffs to use, and what to expect. I was mind blown by the whole thing. I was expecting a “you have been removed from the group” but nope. Amazing community so far.
Hahahaha idk why is funny to me when people expect the worst and instead we help them. I help sprouts because when i was learning other players helped me alot and it was just random people . So wenenver i can or if some1 tell me they new i try to explain each boss to them if we in a dungeon its easier and mayb u plant the seed on this new players to help others when they expierenced
@@cerberusnovaempire9483 FFXIV is a perfect example of lead by example. The story itself starts the whole idea in your head, with all the redemption villains, and almost all evil just being misunderstood good intentions. Then, just experiencing everyone else being nice to you, makes you pass it on as well, and the cycle just perpetuates. The game is literally molding people into being better people with nothing but story telling, and leading by example.

Had some WoW refugees in a dungeon with me the other day, and I had my mentor tag on. They were apologizing for every mistake, and every time we wiped, they acted like a kick was imminent.
They told me they came from WoW, but I can't tell if their behavior stemmed from WoW or their experience with mentors. Either way, I just reassured them and told them: "You know the worst thing about wiping? Nothing. You run back and try again."
The only thing you stand to lose in a wipe is time. But if time mattered, you wouldn't be wasting it in FF.

I wish people in other games saw it that way. People play MMOs like it's a job sometimes, but the most hardcore of that mindset is especially bad in WoW.
@@laerwen Typically these kinds of behaviors are perpetuated because nobody gives them a reality check or calls them out for their bullshit. A lot of people are like "Well gosh, I don't want to be mean and call them out..." And then it just becomes the norm.
In order to stop a community from becoming a bunch of assholes, you need to call them out when they are being an asshole. Negativity is contagious, and it spreads quickly if left unchecked.
As a wow player, i can say that a huge part of the community is very toxic. People will insult you for nothing. And also, 95% of active players are people who spent too much money and time in the game that it turns them salty because they are frustrated of the game and themselves. And they don’t want to try another game because of the money spent in wow blocks their mind so they stick world of Warcraft and they ruins peoples day.
Its funny, I've played WoW for around 13 years now and I don't think I've run into the toxic aspect of raiding. A few jerks here and there, but mostly friendly. I always hear about it though haha.
The dungeon etiquette in FFXIV vs WoW is so night and day.
I still have not done a dungeon in new WoW other than in the starter scenario. I have no desire to, because XIV has spoiled me so much in the leniency most non-Savage/Ultimate players grant.

@FstSergeant8595 FFXIV does have content where one person messing up can wipe you, you can't expect someone who isn't trying to improve to not be kicked. but its nowhere near or even remotely WoW like in even the worst of the raid community in FFXIV, for the most part. got worse when we got the flood of wow refugees, not all of them are good to have sadly.
FFXIV is the MMO where, for the first time in 10 years, I would like to communicate to people. Sending in good words and stuff just to keep up the mood. Raids can get troublesome and some small communications could raise the morale a bit.
Please do! By all means talk to people in party chat if something is unclear, or you just want to reaffirm something.
I always try to do that. A little greeting before the run begins, and always mention if it's my first run of that dungeon. Learning the mechanics from TH-cam is nice and all, but actually experiencing the dungeon is a different thing.
This is exactly what I do. I've been an off-and-on player for about a year now, and just this week, doing things like Leviathan Extreme and Shiva Extreme _(the mount grind, errrghhh),_ I'm in a place now where I'm comfortable giving advice on mechanics, and just telling the team 'We're getting there, keep your heads up, take a breath, _we'll get this!"_ And I've seen the difference it makes, encouraging the team, making sure the new blood knows that we _all_ had trouble with this stuff, it's called _Extreme_ for a reason, but that they _can_ do it. And it's _so_ satisfying to be able to drop that GG in chat afterwards, after we take the win, and know that, for the most part, in this game, people know you actually mean it.
I played WoW mostly during Vanilla and BC, and even then, it was just such a cesspool. FFXIV is like a breath of fresh air. I never thought I would like an MMO again, and for more than a decade I just largely stayed away from them. But I'm glad my friend got me into this one.
@@BlackwingSeraph If it helps at all, you can do the mount farming on Extremes unsync (basically, everyone doesn't get their level scaled back), which makes things go so much faster. If you haven't been using it, I'd encourage giving it a shot, makes the grind so much more bearable, since you can wipe out most bosses in about a minute with a couple of people at 80.
@@maniac7770 I actually just did that today! I had a friend help me and she stomped the fights repeatedly until we got what I was looking for. We felt a little silly when we remembered that was an option, but it was outweighed by relief that we didn't have to faceplant those fights anymore.
My very first dungeon, jumping in, I didn't know that I was in a cinematic and people were willingly waiting, I thought they were just watching it with me! They asked if I liked the scene, and I was like "uuh... Y-yeah! Were you guys waiting this whole time?"
They were so chill about it, and they knew immediately that I was from wow XD
I recently did the Puppet's Bunker for the first time and I was the only one who was new. So of course get the final boss and there is a CS and I was the only one watching it. The rest of the group, all 23 players, not only waited for me to finish watching it but also for me to catch up and get into the arena.
Had it been WoW I would have been kicked for wasting time. Heck, had it been WoW I would have been kicked after I declared it being my first time. Because that happened a number of times for me :/

I'd like to commend the whole group. Seriously, wouldn't have got through all the flash/bang confusion without everyone. Because I get a bit of lagg, I'm slow at the end, sprout and cut scenes etc. but I feel bad that I cannot give everyone more kudos. This game is tough! and nearly everyone has been fantastic. Not an ex WOW player but I do apologize a lot. Lol.
I can't speak for most people, but imo I really don't want the comm of somebody with a sprout. It is my responsibility to help you through the duty and to help explain niche mechanics or offer guidance on how to optimize ("thm use transpose between rooms to keep timer up"). I really want sprouts to commend each other, even when it may feel undeserved (though not in the face of unhelpfulness or toxicity). It gives sprouts that little bit of a high, or at least it did me, to know that even though *I* thought I sucked, somebody thought I did something special, and it made me want to improve my play to a point where I felt I deserved it. You never know who needs a little pick me up that day, but it probably wasn't the level 80 who's so keen to race through dailies that they don't wait for your cutscene to end.
I remember when I did my first FF14 dungeon, I told the group this was my first one, and the leader was just "Cool, this will be easy, so, sit back and just spam attacks. For boss fights, focus boss unless there are adds. Nothing to big, just relax and have fun." I even ended up with the majority of the loot. Everyone was really lax and friendly.
Don't get me wrong, there are toxic people everywhere, but, the number of them in FF14 is on the rather low side. Things are typically calmer, smoother, and more friendlier.
I agree that things are generally friendly over there, but I always wonder how much of it is just it being a genuinely nicer community VS people faking it because they want commendations VS Dungeon content just being very low end (difficulty-wise) compared to where most of the toxicity comes from in WoW content.
Probably a combination of all 3 I guess.
I can't speak for all of us, but most of us aren't faking it. I don't even need comms any more (not unless they add another tier in 6.0) but I want to ensure that new players feel comfortable in our game, because if they have a bad experience early on that might be all they need to uninstall. Can't grow the cult if you make everyone skittish, ahem.

@@Ventorath The game rewards good behavior and helping out. There are achieves for rezzing strangers, you get loot and xp if you help people kill mobs, even if you aren't in a party with them. Everything in the mechanics of the game is designed for players to cooperate with each other and be kind. You're not competing for resources, nabbing loot from each other, or camping someone's spawn to kill them over and over. The entire design philosophy rewards players for being nice. If leads to the players relaxing and (gasp!) having fun instead of constantly being worried that your spawn is going to be nabbed by someone else. Also, you've obviously never played high level dungeons in FF because they are not easy. :P Even veteran WoW players admit that. What they aren't is designed to just make you mad an frustrated and to kill you from invisible mechanics that come out of nowhere. They are designed to be hard, but not punishing. That's the difference.
@@Ventorath Honestly (and this may shock WoW players), a bunch of FFXIV players (especially the ARR 2013-2014 vets) are the way they are based on their own "sprout" experience. In my world of Famfrit, FCs were almost always forgiving, very helpful, made sure we were well geared for battle, and had a sort of "Pay it foward" mindset of helping others. In the end once the sprout fully blossoms, it's only returning what it was given in the first place: respect, kindness, helpful/wise advice, in hopes that the next sprout gets the same treatment as many others.
I'm one of those crazy players who got everything to lv 60 on the free trial, and naturally, I had to run a lot of dungeons. I've only ever found 1 toxic person and they started insulting the healer for not healing me, the tank, fast enough.
I sort of replied something along the lines of "Hey, it's OK, they're doing OK, no need to be mean" and then explained to the healer what some of their abilities did (they said they were still new and didn't know what most of those did, by that point I'd already leveled all healers to 60, so I knew how to use them and remembered having the same struggles). We ended up swiftly clearing the dungeon and the dps who was originally mean actually apologized to the healer.
It felt good to help people get along :D

I actually have gotten quite a few toxic people. But in general i just seem to draw people like that around me. Is it karma or just pure bad luck? I do not know.
@@Tyrvanasome people are just a little sensitive sometimes. I've had someone yell at me when dpsing cause I wasn't following exactly their stride as a tank. If I was running and pulling everything they have every right to have a go at me but I was actually just observing to ensure if they were moving along or stopping. They thought I was trying to ninja pull though and yelled at me for something I wasn't doing lol. They then kicked me when I talked back at their accusations. Most people I've encountered have been nice, at minimum civil, but I think that and another case stand out as the worst encounters I've had.
On the contrary I've had very accomodating people if I've expressed I'm not very experienced with the class I was on and they slowed right down for me. This community is a mixed bag.
We did a higher level msq dungeon, and got stuck on a boss as all sprouts.
We discussed what went wrong and kept trying different things go figure out the fight, 5 wipes and no leavers or complaints
It's an issue that's created by the community and fueled by the community itself. If you have all sprouts in a party, and they're able to do that, the same people could do the same in other games without being toxic equally.
i remember haukke manor hard. we get wiped 3 times by the third add. we discussed and realized we were all first timers on that dungeon. lol

its later on that its more than levels and gear like that one sprout complaining he never died before but we keep getting wiped. well thats the turtle boss that we need to cannon the heal out of it. doesnt matter your exp gear or level at that. if you dont do mechanics you wipe.

This tends to be how it is the first week or two into new content too. Don't get me wrong you can get people that clear it day one and get mad.
But for the most part people work together to figure things out or let you figure it out as well.

on one of my first dungeons, the tank kept pulling way too fast and i could never get a shot off in time, so i worked up the courage to ask if they could slow down so i could keep line of sight, and they DID! and they weren't even sassy about it or anything! i appreciate this community so freaking much! ;u;

@@yamisniper That's not just rough for healers, it's rough for all the casting classes. I usually play Arcanist/Summoner and when a tank does that I hardly get to play the dungeon. It gets frustrating. I haven't reached the higher level dungeons yet though, so I don't know if they keep doing it later on.
@@benjaminfast5496 they do. but that's quite normal and trust me you wont be bothered at all because funfact: lategame dungeons are made to be played like that, thats why many tanks get so used to it to play the same thing in lower content where they should maybe slow down abit because of the lack of utility and skills you as a caster have there. But be asured that will also change for your class. for every class that is.
Finals Dungeon content is made to run from threshhold to threshold and then mow them down (wich is a bit sad tbh but thats how it is) and so are the later skills you get. especcialy summoner doesnt realy cast anymore.. you will have so many instants and ogcd's you wont even notice that youre running and shooting instead of just standing and shooting^^

FFXIV in a nutshell
If you just accept that the vast majority of players are probably super stoned, everything will start to make sense. I usually like to use my glow sticks in dungeons or trials while we're waiting. Party time is time to partaaaay.
In JP server, whenever a sprout managed to clear a raid or a dungeon despite dying few times, we like to congratulate them. Sometimes we use any firecracker we have or that champagne item. Since I rarely have those in my inventory, I usually clapped or cheered them once they're done with the cutscene.
When a friend gets married, ask them for the champagne.

I used to play on JP servers before OCE ones released. I'm new and still really bad at the game, but everyone was always really nice and understanding anyway. The auto-translate phrases really helped with communication, such a good idea!
lol yep. I did a double take the other day when the only non sprout in the party congratulated us for defeating a boss. At first I wasn't sure if he was being genuine or sarcastic, but by the end I was pretty sure he was genuine.
Genuine. They might have been playing up the praise a bit to try and be welcoming if you were new, dungeon bosses aren't all that hard really, but the intent was almost certainly to encourage. Very common in lower level dungeons when you might expect people to not be used to how the game works or some of the unexpectedly tricky ones like aurum vale. That or you were just performing noticeably above average, which is always nice to see.
@@Poldovico Yep whenever I play with someone from any of the ARR dungeons in leveling roulette and get the "First Time" notification If I can find out who's new to it I always give them a commedation just for getting through it and congratulate them (especially if they're tank or healer). I mainly do it just to be friendly and welcoming
@poldovico You'd be surprised at the number of morons I have come across in DF. Seeing sprouts do the basic minimum - hold the boss, heal, do damage is more than enough for me to say "good job you guys" or "gg" or something like that when I'm in a dungeon with sprouts. Especially with the lower level dungeons where there are certain tricks that vet players know, so when I tell sprouts to do something like "focus down the boss only, ignore all adds" and they do it, I'm super happy at that point and comm and compliment them,
If I only say "tyfp" and dip at the end of a leveling dungeon with a bunch of sprouts and neglect to throw confetti and use cheer emotes, I'm probably having a bad day.
In FFXIV the difficulty kinda ramps up step by step with every dungeon and trial, which means completing a new duty usually means "Hey, you learned some new mechanics and managed them properly", even if dungeons by themselves aren't hard, the 1st time in a dungeon we're always blind and could always be caught off guard by some mechanics. This ramp-up feeling goes throughout all expansions and encounters, meaning you'll usually feel like you're always getting better at the game with the tools you are given when leveling.

@Vayalond might want to check out Trusts. Run dungeons with the Scions. You have to level them up but it’s pretty fast (4-5 per level) and then you can run any 71+ dungeon to your heart’s content with a pretty reliable group. Even Alphie improves 😆

same omg- i was playing a healer for the first time in a raid, and i was still new at what to look for and how to best utilize my skills, and at this one point (there must have been a lot of new players) a bomb attack that you’re supposed to dodge by hiding behind a rock took out half the players including me and we wiped, not a single person out of the 20+ people were upset, it was all “hey guys don’t sweat it, just hide behind the rock with us!” and i was already so nervous and overwhelmed, when we lived and learned they were all like “there you go! you got it!” it genuinely startles me so much it’s like i walked into another universe where online isn’t synonymous with hate and being rude 😅 any time i have a question it’s 100% of the time met with genuine responses and it’s so scary
As someone who's only played FFXIV seeing wow people come in and be shocked by how chill the community can be is really nice. We try our best and that's all that matters. Enjoy the game sprouts!
My favourite is seeing so many wow refugees are also not toxic either. It's the game itself. When you spend that much time playing a game that is designed to frustrate you and make you grind and do chores for 95% of your playtime, you start to internalise resentment, and that comes out on other players. When the game is actually fun to play and respects your time, it's much easier to not get annoyed because you don't feel like you're wasting time out of the 18 hours you'll need to do all your daily rotation of shit.
To all the people saying ‘the FFXIV community isn’t always nice’ - listen there’s gonna be jerks in any group of people but as someone who’s played a good deal of both games FFXIV’s few cases of actual trolls got NOTHIN on the troll levels of the AVERAGE WoW player let alone a super toxic one. Your bar is extremely low. FF14 loves to tote itself as a "friendly community" but outside of WoW, every other MMO I've played has had similar or better communities as far as elitism and toxicity goes.

This was my first run! Being an English speaker on a Japanese data centre, I had no idea about the auto translate function. So here I am, telling them I'm new IN English, they are using the translator, I have no idea what is going on and at the end of it all they are using emotes to cheer etc and I'm trying to read about the commendations, by the time I knew what it was they had already left the dungeon. There was a lot of confusion in my first dungeon, at least for me! Massive difference to my first experience in WoW
Oh I'm in Pandemonium and yeah! I use romaji Japanese though hahaha but these newer servers definitely more friendly than the legacy ones. They give you lots of commendations even when you know you sucks hahahah
Fellow JP server player here, don't worry about language barrier. As long they can understand you well, it's fine. Explore the auto translate function, it's pretty much a big help.
Iirc English is a part of the high school curriculum in JP so most Japanese players will be able to read English to some degree. Auto-TL is better tho XD

This scene from Amadeus is the perfect metaphor for the culture shock involved. I played WoW for six years and was astonished even while in neck-deep at the level of toxic BS that was normalized. People who are just coming over to FF now: we've been gaslit by a company that doesn't care enough to have higher standards and enforce them. They think it's part of the charm. Need to inform them via our wallets that *it's not*. It just sucks.
I have a lot of stories like everyone else about how people in FF are super cool. I might actually consider a second main job as a healer because I am not nearly as afraid of being harassed with really not much recourse the way I was in WoW. Play games that improve your mental health, not destroy it.
Healers don't face much harassment unless you're clearly and consistently doing a mechanic wrong. Most groups will assume the tank fucked up somehow, instead.
If you're unsure about trying healer my advice would be to try and make friends with a few others and ask if they'll help you learn a few dunges as a new hlr. Everyone's real nice, and if they know you need help they will help! I'm a hlr main myself (ast) so I know it can be a bit intimidating at first, but I encourage you to try it out!
Oooh, I hope you'll try healer! I was terrified to try it at first. (I never played WoW, but I did play support in LoL a lot and... Yeah, scarring.) But healing can be really fun. Also, I think we can all agree that AST has just the prettiest spell effects and LB3. And what is a job if not the aesthetic. ;)
I was never very scared of healing in WoW. I find it fun and no one has ever really harassed me for it.

As an long time WoW player, I still sense the built up toxicity in myself when someone stands in fire while healing or repeatedly messes up what seems like an obvious mechanic. But the kindness I have seen has slowly been seeping the venom from my heart :)
I stop rezzing the person when they die immediately after being picked up. In the end, there are 2 other players who want to go through the dungeon in a reasonable amount of time and some players just play so bad that rezzing them would amount to a few seconds of gameplay for them and a dps loss for everyone else.

My WoW experience: Playing tank and getting kicked because I was waiting for everyone else to be ready before pulling the boss.
My FFXIV experience: Playing tank and me and the healer dancing together while waiting for the rest of the group to catch up.
I've never really been a fan of directly comparing two games to each other. But by the twelve is this community a lot less angry at everything.
I've had exactly one toxic interaction in this game: A guy who never went to get his Paladin job stone was upset because I was playing Dancer. Why? Because it was "Shit DPS". What caused this? He saw I was playing Dancer.
I contacted the support desk and I basically got a "Yeah you're not supposed to be that way. Sorry that happened."

In WoW, if you pull a boss and the healer and dps aren't ready, they're expected to cope.
In FFXIV, I've seen runs where a tank pulls the boss, realizes no one is following him in and and when he asked: 'Uh, team?' they responded with: 'Sprout is watching cutscene. We're waiting for it to finish.' he apologized profusely and honestly hadn't noticed. He didn't die, but he did feel bad about pulling without checking if everyone was ready.
No one expects a ready check in a 4 man dungeon, but a quick 'is everyone here and ready to go' glance is always nice.
It makes me beam with pride and joy every time a group waits the 20-30 seconds it takes for the intro of the final dungeon boss to finish. Some take a bit longer, but I have never seen anyone complain about having to wait.
I have seen tanks pull a boss even though they knew damn well not everyone was there yet, but even in those cases, a group is quick to call them on that and say: None of that! They deserve to watch their cutscene and we don't have the right to rush them.
SE does not treat players badly like bliz does, so alot of it comes from that.

I loveee this community, I've never encountered anyone mad at a wipe. Usually it's "oops srry didn't heal fast enough" or "dang man forgot tank stance" and a response is always along the lines of "ya dude it's cool, been there" , so nice ;;
I remember back in the old ARR days where everyone in the dungeon was pretty quiet and only spoke up if we did mechanics wrong.
These days, I'm showered with hellos and ggs. Not only has the game evolved, the community has as well.
When I first got into some "higher" level dungeons where mechanics are less forgiving, I died and promptly tried to explain that I wasn't dogshit and just having a bad day and I'm sorry. The group stopped the dungeon and had to explain that its totally ok, and we were actually doing just fine, they all patted me on the back... I was so shocked by their kindness, still am to this day.

I try to do that when I see someone apologize in chat for "screwing up" or whatever. I'm usually the one apologizing, so when I see someone else having a rough go of it, I try to cheer them on so they don't get discouraged. I was doing a dungeon with 2 other sprouts & a veteran tank and all three of us sprouts died in the middle of the final boss & got locked out of the battle area. We stood there & watched the tank kick butt. We all apologized & then gave commendations to the tank & they were super nice about us all dying and gave some suggestions. It could have been so much worse, but everyone was just helpful.
bro, i ran an extreme one time and it was 7 first timers and one guy who done the trail before, he explained the mechanics to us for like 45 minutes, he was such a nice dude

I'm not a wow refugee, but duuude I was in shock when I started playing. I'm a WHM sprout and the amount of support received and patience people have is amazing. I'm level 47 now and I've only had one slightly negative player that said "oh god" when I got a bit overwhelmed and let someone die lol. If I die to a mechanic they'll take the time to explain it before the next instance. And I'll still get commendations and "good job dude" after the dungeons even though I died twice and costed them time. Can't imagine that in any other game. None.
When I started playing WHM, I got really overwhelmed in my first dungeon as one, to the point of crying because I felt like it was too much for me; the players were around me, waiting for my character to move again while I was drying my tears, and took it really slow because they understood without a word that it was my first time playing WHM, it was incredibly sweet of them
It makes me happy to know that I can watch the cutscenes for the pivotal story dungeons and the party will be completely fine with me watching it. I love the story so far (about to finish stormblood’s plot) and I can’t wait to see the rest!

Its truly amazing the difference the community makes for the health of a game. I've enjoyed ffxiv so much more than WoW. Healing has absolutely become my favorite role.

Man, the culture surrounding FFXIV is so cool. Me and 3 other guys were running the Midgardsomr dungeon and we died 2 times.
Instead of people arguing or complaining, we all played it off with some jokes. We didn't blame anyone despite there being a weaker link in the team. (Our healer was getting used to his new Scholar layout)
We celebrated rather than complained. The guy said sorry and we 3 insisted everything was cool and the boss was pretty tricky to deal with. I love that the fact that we did somewhat poorly on the boss but kept our spirits high made the run so much less frustrating and even more fun because it was a nice change from just laying waste to other bosses.

I'm not a WoW refugee but back when I first started, I decided to play as conjurer and god was I constantly scared of being blamed for the tank dying or party wiping. So I kind of panic healed. I think the first time I really messed up was when I continuously fell off of the platform due to landslides in the Navel. I was really scared because the group had to wipe whenever I fell because I'm the healer and after maybe 3-4 falls and a number of apologies, one of the dps gave me some pointers on how to not fall. After about two more tries, we cleared as I finally got the hang of it. The group was super nice to me while I was trying to get the hang of the landslides. I also got over panic healing when the tank in an early dungeon told me I could dps when he wasn't below like 50%. I can safely say I'm a decent white mage now thanks to the people who gave me pointers when I was new.
This happened to me too, about the panic healing and all. As a long time healer in RPGs, I always took players dying to heart, but everyone in this game just stays chill and try again. Sometimes I even tear up with their kindness.

I'm just finishing up Heavensward now, and have only come across one player who was horrible in that entire time. It was Sohm Al, and the tank was chain pulling despite not knowing the dungeon, and caused a wipe. This bard pipes up calling him a WoW refugee who doesn't know how to play, and then apologised for snapping as he'd had people causing wipes all week. Then left.
So not only are there very few toxic players, even the ones who snap apologise sometimes!

I only been playing a little over two weeks. As soon as the MSQ said i had to go do Sastasha I legit broke out in a cold sweat and nearly had a anxiety attack. I'm playing a gladiator because i want to try out a paladin later so i was tanking. The first couple of pulls were funky because i didn't notice my iron will buff turned off when we entered the dungeon. i switched it back on and things went much smoother. It was actually fun tanking it. The group was very supportive and actually gave me a few helpful pointers. Imagine my surprise when i didn't get cussed or kicked if i missed an add pick up. I'll never be comfortable as a speed run tank but i think i might like tanking in the future.
Yeah you will. You'll eventually get to a point where doing those dungeons is second nature. You'll learn what you can and cannot pull. You'll be wall-pulling in no time. It's no big deal. And I am a trashcan of a tank.
Tanking is easy as long as you remember your primary job as a tank is mob control, as long you have all the mobs attention trust your team to kill them and keep you alive. Also don’t stand in AOEs.
Nah man, you’ll be wall pulling soon, if not already. Don’t let your anxiety get the better of you and if you’re ever in doubt just ask the healer if they are ok with you trying it for the first time. 99.99%of them will tell you knock yourself out. Let ‘er rip, fellow tank!

Honestly, sprouts are adorable 😭💕 got Suzaku after a looooong time and 3 dps and my co-healer were new. When the platform colors came up, I simply said, "watch out for the tether". They watched it alright, and stood on the colors in the order they'd explode 😭😭 I couldn't help but laugh and say "oh my goodness!!! They at least watched the tether😂😂😂"
I just started to try my hand and a healing class, said it in the duty roulette of "hey I'm still learning the mechanics on this class. Bare with me." and tank went a little slower and didn't pull huge groups. It was just nice to be learning with support.
Not sure how toxic this is but... If a healer says that to me but handles the small pulls okay, and I can see they're DPSing I'll start pulling more just to push them a little. If we wipe we wipe I don't mind, but I feel as a veteren healer the best way to get more comfortable doing bigger pulls is to just do it once you got the basics down.
@@miamha Meanwhile I did Paglth'an the first time and they pulled literally every mob until the end areas and I literally about had a panic attack cause I was up at 5am in the morning trying not to puke (but needed a distraction).
The ONLY reason I didn't mind is cause I am a healer of several years at this point, but if that happened to a sprout I'd be so upset for them :(
@@LithFox Well technically you would not easily see sprouts in the latest dungeon. It is very usual to pull wall to wall in high end dungeons lvl80s since by that point you are supposed to be at ease with your class etc. You can still see people who might have skipped expansions or bought their classes but then its up to them to practice. Surely though If I was a sprout I would kindly ask to slow down and let the people know I bought a class, lets say, and still learning it. Most that could happen either they joke and kick me or we stay and clear happily and slow.
@@miamha I know this comment isn't exactly fresh (thank the TH-cam algorithm for that) but I just want to say that, as long as you do any such ramping up in a gradual way, I wouldn't consider it toxic at all really. If both you and the healer seem to be very comfortable, it doesn't hurt to go a little further, perhaps "chain pulling" rather than wall to wall (that is, moving on to pack #2 before pack #1 is completely dead).
There are of course contextual things like "maybe don't do as much of that if you have a BLM, since they can't really do damage *and* move a lot," but by and large if your newbie healer seems to have a very solid grasp, you can probably push a *little* more. Perhaps ask just before a boss "is this a good pace? Seems like you've got a very good handle on things." Communication is almost always best!
@@playmary123 I don't even think it's *possible* to see a sprout in something like Paglth'an, but I find most folks are quite willing to be patient if you speak up or the game says "one or more party members have yet to complete this duty." I tend to give people the option of pointers (if I think I can give good ones, that is!) but avoid just leaping straight into them.
When I rush for the exit after a run it's not intended as being rude, it's usually because I'm embarrassed about dying 17 times because many mechanics are super opaque.
...Or, y'know, be proactive about it. "Hey, apologies for dying so much!" or something to that effect.

It feels like they couldn't be bothered to say something relevant to the situation, so they just make a homogeneous automated message instead and it feels a bit lazy and condescending. @@Xylarxcode Keep in mind though that not every FF14 player has a keyboard at hand. I heard many console players have macros for the basics (like "hi" or "gg") bc. the PS keyboard software is a nightmare and they don't want to be super rude by not greeting at all.
This was litterally me when I migrated from wow to FFXIV. I was so bad at tanking and afraid to watch the cutscenes in the dungeon and the people were like: Don't worry. Watch the cutscenes. This game has an amazing story, enjoy it.

I did some content yesterday where me (dps) and a Tank were new to it.
In the end, there was like a Sword on the ground and I thought we need to attack it since everyone stopped to dps the boss. I accidently clicked the sword (it wasn't an enemy) was about to post in chat that I'm sorry but then a freaking QTE starts and I was mashing out of my mind.
That was the most insane and epic thing so far and everyone said: nice safe! and WD!
I have legit no idea what happened but I got a lot of commendations and told to enjoy the story.

Nearly 17 years of WoW, dungeons have always been a bit scary. Even if you know it, a screw up can bring the salt. I’ve never tanked in my life. Ever. It always freaked me out. The idea of keeping agro, positioning, staying alive, etc., just gave me anxiety.
Then, came FF. I started playing 2-3 days ago. We’re talking maybe 10 hours total played? I just really like Paladin, so decided I’d go gladiator. Besides, just playing solo, so nbd. But, I got to the point in the main questline where it forces you to run a dungeon. And I was the tank.
It was fantastic! No stress, just “Hey all, new here” “Me too” “Kk”. Three sprouts, one vet- she guided us through, pulled extra packs when I could handle it but was going slow, and all were happy at the end! I can’t express what a great job FF does to teach you your class, role, and the Hall of Novices to practice role activities- it’s night and day difference from WoW.
Not sure, but it really feels like this may be the actual WoW-killer for me!
When you get out of an extremely abusive relationship and realize you deserve to be treated better.

In my experience, this is mostly true. I've had only one asshole who was mean when I slid off an edge and was rude when I asked about a boss mechanic. He annoyed me enough to drop out of the run. Everyone else has been super chill. We had a tank in Aurum Vale who forgot to put on level appropriate armor (leveling new class), died super consistently, and I just asked him what level his armor was cause he was dying super fast. He saw his mistake, apologized profusely, and I just asked him to take small pulls and see if it would work. The rest of the team was fine with it, and we just slow rolled the dungeon. Folks tend to be very chill on dungeons.
My first few dungeons were great & then I got a real cranky healer in one. I am new to gaming in general FFXIV in particular so I didn't understand all the mechanics & kept dying. He chewed me out & I was so bummed I just shut off the game (later I felt bad I left the other DPS & Tank in there alone) & didn't play for a few months because all my confidence was shot. I've been playing again for the last few months & have watched some tips videos & read up on dungeons so I feel more confident, but also everyone has been super chill & helpful since then, so I figure that guy was a one-off. I now tend to start dungeons with a "Hello" and a "Tips are welcome" type message. I've gotten some great tips along the way that have helped me be a better player.

For those who are new to FFXIV. the FFXIV community is very nice when it comes to helping each other out. This is coming from someone who has been playing FFXIV since Heavenward. Sure, you might bump into someone in the game that is harsh and sweaty but that is rare (at least for me) I remember playing the Raid The Orbonne Monastery in Stormblood for the first time and remember i was fighting i think it was the boss where you have to pick up Shield and sword perks to help protect yourself and break your teammates out of the crystal. During that boss fight, i was a tank and was going to do my role on aggroing on of the 3 giant adds so my party can kill him, i messed up twice got us killed and Party C tank was talking smack to me for not doing my job well saying i was a bad tank and other harsh things, the parties saw this and Party A, B and his Party were defending me by talking back to him saying that i'm new and he is here to learn like everyone else did. i was just there standing doing nothing while these parties were straight going at him. it took me 2 more times but we ended up beating the boss and moving on and clearing it. i got my parties player commendations that day and getting complements on i was a good tank. To this day, i'll never forget that moment. best community in a game i have every played in.

Communism, Over migration, Hedonism, etc. The Elites are overwhelmingly Liberal and the middle class tends to be more conservative. Look at blue collar workers in America such as construction workers, welders, private farmers, etc they are nearly all conservative. Literally the backbone of any Country is conservative in nature because traditions and principles are what keep their families successful for years to come but they will still embrace new innovations and technology all the same as long as they fit within the morals ethics and principles of conservatism.

I was afk for like 5mins and when i got back this dude was trying to give me a companion. Just waiting for me when i got with the trade screen up. I was really confused at first at this display of kindness AND patience and i still feel bad about keeping him waiting :)
I think this goes for everyone new to the game. Not just WoW refugees. I know me and a friend was confused as hell with the commendations when we first did dungeons.
When I started playing back in May I would literally look up every dungeon and trial before doing them as to not go in blind, yes I messed at times but never had one bad group the whole time, if I didn't know how to do something it was just explained. The reason I looked up everything because it was fear of being kicked or belittled by the group. I encountered none of this and so many times after a dungeon or trial would end someone would say enjoy the rest of the MSQ. Honestly its a great community.
I always look stuff up because I don't want to drag the group down. And half the time i end up in a group of all noobs and I end up guiding people through boss battles I've never done before. It never hurts to be prepared. Even if nobody's going to bite your head off for making a mistake, it's still better to make as few as possible.
I'm the same way, I have major dungeon anxiety from my WoW days so nearly every dungeon or trial I run, I'm looking up the mechanics and writing them down so I don't get people upset.
I do this too. As a former WoW player (left after Mists, been playing FF for 5 years now) it was drummed in to you that you must research boss mechanics before entering a dungeon. Still do it even now, more out of habit. But I kinda feel for sprouts and when I look back on this habit, I do rather think it spoils the enjoyment and wonder of the game for new players. Imagine looking forward to going to watch a movie and then being told you have to watch spoiler clips beforehand. Don't get me wrong, I get the 'be prepared' mentality - but I do sometimes think being pressured into not going blind into a dungeon and experiencing it as it was intended is just peer pressure to get things done quickly.
Watching a video of a fight before doing it for the first time legitimately spoils the whole experience for me. People will also only expect that if you're doing Savage/Ultimate raids in a public group, so there's no reason to reduce your enjoyment for most content.
@@Furnado_ I don't like video guides, I only find written guides. Personally, I don't find enjoyment in walking into dungeons and raids blind. It terrifies me. I have more fun when I have knowledge of what to expect vs when I have no idea what I'm doing. I guess people just have different ideas of enjoyment, lol.
I keep having this same thought whenever I think about my experience playing wow so im sharing it here: Being so lovingly welcomed into ffxiv after years of being a WoW player was like finding my soulmate after a miserable breakup. Seriously, the moment I say "Heyo, I'm new" everyone just says "okay cool" and the more experienced folks are immediately like "here's how you do this one, try doing this and then that when we get to this point :)" and are so patient and kind, and it actually makes me excited to play the fkin game and join parties! I feel safe here ;w; Much love to every ffxiv player for the wonderful community you've all made.

Reading comments from former WoW players makes me so happy. Welcome to the community! I hate y’all had to deal with such hostility before, but this is the only online game I can think of where people tend to not grief newbies as much as other games and are genuine with others. Almost ten years playing this game and I’m still amazed when people give random tips and help when I’m struggling with my rotation or even playing Mahjong. This community is what keeps me coming back every time.
I play on a server where I don’t speak their language, so I just use emotes like some kind of mime. Bow at the end of an instance, kneel and put my head on the floor when making mistakes, cheer on when we wipe (and I think I’m not the reason why we wiped, lol). I’ve had people respond back with emotes. It’s fun!
have a look through and figure out how to use the autotranslate system in chat, it's extremely handy and no matter what language you or they speak, it will make sense to everyone :)

I always loved the silent communications in this game. Even if I'm on English servers, I still appreciate those silent interactions because I'd be really awkward if I have to do random chatters out of nowhere.
You know, there's an auto-translate feature with a lot of premade phrases that can alleviate that.

I can’t help but think of the time I got Ala Mhigo as a roulette with a bunch of first-timers. One asked me (DRK) to go slow, and I joked “No promises” (I go slow anyway for the healer to recover after every encounter). After elaborating that it was a bad joke, I checked if the group was doing all right, to the point the healer thanked me for both that and going slow. After wiping to Zenos yae Galvus, we beat him with a vengeance. In short, I’m glad I joined such a friendly community.
The most shocking thing to me was how patient everyone is. The cutscenes are the biggest example. Towards the beginning of my ffxiv career i was apologizing for making people wait while i watched but i can say that every single time I apologized i was told it’s okay and that i absolutely should be watching the cutscenes. No one has any patience in wow. I have come to the realization that it’s because ffxiv doesn’t waste the player’s time like wow.
Wipe on the final boss? No worries here’s a port. Haukke manor has you run all the way back? Oh no, use your hearth to return to the front.
It’s almost like the game is designed to be fun?! But that’s just crazy talk right?
Best community ever. Went from another mmo where I had dungeon anxiety, to this which makes me excited to play new content. So far only one trash experience in the 3 months I’ve been playing. Those are some great odds!
As a healer main, I tend to offer sprout tanks advice if I see them screwing up or making mistakes. You can usually tell the former WoW players because they think honest advice is meant as an attack, but it's always so great when they realize that most people in the FF community want to be helpful. I had a brand new DRK tank who I offered a bit of advice to during the run, then who stayed after the roulette was done and asked me what all he'd done wrong and could do better since he'd never tanked before. We chatted for almost a half hour about things and now he's pulling great tanking runs.
The few trash experiences I've had In XIV have unanimously resulted in the team voting the problem player out and going on to succeed without them. Feels VERY good.
I still have dungeon anxiety even while playing FFXIV; gotta go write down all that info on boss mechanics so people don't get mad at me. :^)
@@WithASideOfTibbs Generally people don't get mad at people with a flower or sprout above their heads. And to some extend even less skilled players, since you can tell who they are. Almost, if not all extremely experienced players use a DPS meter outside of the game to see performance of the group. Hence why we can tell who is casual and who is just new.
In any case 95% wont discrimminate and wont be rude. They'll be helpful. But you CAN meet a toxic experienced player, especially the 1 Ultimate snobs that think they own the place, while us 3ults and week 1 people just chill.

I've played FFXIV on and off for several years now (just hit level 70 for the first time on my own, yay) and I honestly love the community and how kind it is. Now I’m in my first year Im leading new sprouts in dungeons and I feel like a school teacher leading kids on a field trip and I kinda like it!
As a WoW refugee who healed Whhhhhoooooo boi is healer so less toxic in Ffxiv. I picked up Arcanist so I have a dps and a healer at the same level but even when the healing jumped in complexness it wasn't toxic from the others. I've only healed the main story duty's to around lvl43 and the only issue I had is with one tank who pulled the entire room and he took so much damage me spamming my quickest healing spell did nothing. No salt after the wipe blaming the healer for the impossible, just the tank readjusting pull sizes to reasonable levels. Much more pleasant than anything in wow that would come from that.
Just as a note, unless the tank or you were undergeared, or he was not using his cooldowns right, it's basically impossible to run into unhealable pulls, there might have been something you could have done to raise your output.
I have not started Scholar yet, so I don't know specifics there, but it's something very common with beginner white mages that will spam Cure 1 because it's technically their fastest cast(and to conserve mana) not realizing that it massively drops their healing output per GCD compared to using Cure 2.
But like I said having not optimal gear on both the healer and tank can throw a wrench in that calculation and especially level 50 and below dungeons can be cutting it very close with big pulls even if everyone plays optimally, because you just have so few buttons at that level.
I just wanted to let you know that you maybe have some unused potential you could be looking into, but generally tanks will have no issues with scaling down a bit if they see healers struggling.
@@Whosimon Early level Scholar does indeed have trouble healing. It isn't until 50+ where the class really comes online in a meaningful way; until then, it's way rougher than the other two.
@@Whosimon Actually some lower level dungeons are scaled strangely so that literally everyone is made of paper. this problem goes away at higher levels.
avoid using physick unless you absolutely have to ( no mp) even when you have to heal fast is better to use adloquium if you have it. If you need for a quick spell you can use swiftcast + the spell you need for insta cast, provided that you can keep the tank alive ( alse is better to leave it to insta raise the dead tank and get back on track) For the most part use the fairy cooldowns during pulls once you get them + adloquium. Soon at lvl45 you ll see a big difference just by the use of eatherflow aka lustrate

this is horrifying accurate... i'd like to add something: 8 player instance = at least one male Rhoegadyn as WHM and the only visible clothing is a leopard panty (they would use a string if they could!!)
Sprouts always make me smile whenever I see them. Because I was one once as well, and I remember the feeling of being blown away by the game, being scared of my first dungeon (mild performance anxiety, as it was my first true MMO experience with party dungeon mechanics), and then slowly realizing that I wasn’t going to be picked apart or judged for failing at first. The lessons I’ve learned from players who cared enough to sit me down and chat me through the upcoming boss when I said “first time, new here” was so heartwarming, and I sincerely hope to pay it forward to others like myself.
Was doing roulette with friend the other day. Got a tank doing a dungeon for the first time. Our hraler is great so we said "big pulls buddy" and they followed suit. At the end they said how cool it was to fight like 10+ mobs at once and not die. Feels good every time.

as a wow refugee I never see anyone say anything. I havent experienced any toxicity but ive completed the first three dungeons and no one said a word in them, except for two ggs in the third one.

I've never played WoW, but I did recently end up healing for a group of WoW Refugees in their first ever dungeon. On no less than three occasions while giving them tips they broke down from how nice and helpful I was. When I told them you could press tab to target something they freaked out like, "You won't get yelled at and kicked for tab targeting???"

I was TAB targeting in WoW for three expansions and in one I got ahead of curve (highest difficulty achievement for raid) so kinda dont understard it. I would sooner laugh at someone targeting with mouse.

I had a run as heals with 3 sprouts, it was the last dungeon for ShB (the really good one before fighting you know who) and DrEx for me.
And they started talking about WoW. So I vowed to myself to keep them alive. And just let them enjoy the content. The bosses of these sometimes tend to kill parties if you don't pay attention. Mainly, It was nice chatting to them as well.
Nice people tbh! Regardless of how it seems or may appear, gamers in general are nice to each other regardless of what game we spent the most time in.
We all just want a good time in the end after all.

This is so true. I ran my first dungeon yesterday as healer (first time healing since 2014 or so) and I couldn't believe how relaxed and chill everyone was. FFxiv is a breath of fresh air.
did World of Darkness raid the other day. Healer apologized for their mom being distracting, lead up to to them complaining about not liking their mother, a few other party members chastising the healer for saying such a thing, and then 1 boss later, apologizing to the healer for stepping over bounds, and not knowing the situation. I was like. O_O wtf? is this real life? lol

I remember how mean and hostile people were when I first started playing WoW. I had a friend who got me into it and she raided regularly so I was lucky to have her give me pointers and advice on how to not piss people off in a dungeon or raid.
Then WoW went to shit and I found myself playing FFXIV and so far I have yet to find a toxic player 70 levels in.
i have probably 300 hours in the game and only just ran into a toxic player the other day for the first time
they exist, every game has them, but FFXIV has much less of them.
@@spadesartThis has been my exact experience, last night I just hit 70 and went healer for the first time in HW’s final dungeon. All positivity and pointers, no complaints about the player base.
One of the biggest things I've noticed that Sprouts (especially WoW refugees) are surprised by is that they can actually need on gear without fear of being yelled at. xD And greed on gear just to greed. I was the same way when I first switched from WoW to FF14 in 2017.
I still sometimes only greed on non class gear because I don't want to take it from someone because I chose need, but now I do indeed feel like I can need on gear for my class without feeling bad because of people like you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you
what i really like doing sometimes is to just start typing and talking in the chat, usually about me being a dummy and almost dying, or how we turned the mini boss into swiss cheese. i guess it eases the party's nerves or it opens the door to be a lil more relaxed cus then everyone starts getting social and vocal, its really fun!

Good Christ the reactions from the the WOW people make me glad i never got into it. Like "I'm was so indoctrinated into accepting nonstop abuse and hatred as normal after 15 years that when someone was nice for .5 seconds i cried for two hours"
I just ran my first 2 dungeons today, one as a DPS one as a tank. After my tank run, the other players thanked me and gave me commendations... I was so confused. I had to google what was up with the commendations. The culture shock coming from WoW is real, but so welcomed!
Makes you realize just how abusive your relationship with WoW truly was lol.
I still get nervous when I tank a dungeon because I expect to be screamed at and/or have the party disband anytime I fuck something up lol.
I was afraid to run healer/tank as well. Still a liiiiittle iffy on running healer but now I'll tank for high and low level dungeons, usually taking it slow but I may start kicking up the pace where I can. Welcome to Eorzea, my fellow WoW refugee, may you walk in the light of the crystal ^~^
You can also tell a wow refugee in the open world by how they run outside of a building and THEN mount up.
