      I have a couple of those cheap Chinese disk detainer picks that I modified. Firstly I picked the same type of lock you use in your video as they are a great way to compare what you are feeling with feedback. After this I bought three cheap locks from Ebay or Amazon, all three different in size or shape. I did manage to pick two of them several times but the third a small disk detainer lock with a small core is proving a little more difficult. I have made a picking tip that fits in the lock but need to modify a tensioner to grip the first disk.
      So basically I am saying with all that waffle, buy a couple of those cheap Chinese locks on the net as that won't break the bank balance. Yes they can feel gritty but a little graphite helps.

    Nice work on the open. My acrylic dd lock came in many pieces because the core plug came out during shipping. Putting it back together was the first thing I had to do and that really helped with learning the function. I would suggest pulling the plug off the bottom and fixing it. Shouldn't be too hard. Have fun.

      How do I get the core out? Normally you take the front cap off. Mine doesn't want to come off at least not easily.

      Unless it's made different/better than most of the cheap Chinese ones, you ahould be able to just pry it out with a screwdriver. They are usually just held in with friction. Tried to find a video but couldn't. Maybe I'll make a quick one to show you mine.

    hello helpfullockpicker I was hoping that you could answer a question for me I have The sparrows disc detainer pick and I went to Walmart and bought a kryptonite bicycle lock it's the black one in the shape of u and I'm not sure if it's even possible for me to pick with it the front disc spins and the key doesn't seem like it has a very solid tip like a rear tensioning lock usually has so I don't know if it tensions from the rear or one of the middle discs or from the second disc but whenever I put the pic in it does seem to grip onto the second disc it spins a little bit over 45°
    I should note that whenever I put the key in it is the second cut appears to be a zero and that is the only disc that my pick can grip

    My goodness, got yourself a Silver Bullet even before getting your first open? Must be nice. Top shelf tool right there. However, unless using it to teach others, I generally do NOT recommend using an acrylic lock, as it trains one to not use their other senses as effectively when picking. The best way to learn to pick is to pick and pick some more, and then more after that.

      One other thing. In your explanation of the function of the key, you stated that the deeper the cut the more rotation, when that is, in fact the opposite of how the lock works. The deeper the cut on the key, the less that the disc rotates when the key is turned.
      Keep in mind that when picking, you are kind of working the discs BACKWARDS into the gates. When inserting a key, all the discs have to rotate to full counter clockwise to allow the key into the keyway, then rotate clockwise to advance all discs to their gates and then dropping the bar to continue rotation to the actuator. I hope this helps others get a better handle on openinh this often frustrating kind of lock.

    • @N0B0DY_SP3C14L
      @N0B0DY_SP3C14L 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would not call the zero'ing optional. Try zero'ing out the lock to get disc 1 into place. LPL's instructionals on DD's are excellent resources for learning more.

    • @keithschrack
      @keithschrack 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@N0B0DY_SP3C14L I was going to say the same thing. Deeper cut = shallow rotation can be a counter-intuitive idea.

    Dude, I never recommend using this see-thru lock to practise on. It is so sloppy that it is almost its own defence and like you have found out, the discs cease up very easily which can cause trouble for picks if they are forced. Awesome to see you are on your way though, good job!

    • @HelpfulLockPicker
      @HelpfulLockPicker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      For me, it was the only lock I had hanging around that I could figure out. I order a few of the locks that you suggested and Albert Lebel is sending me a few to work on too!
      In part why I wanted to get this one to work is because I need either a see through or cutaway to do some of the teaching that I would like to do down the road, however, my only cutaway is an ABLOY CL290 T-Handle Cylinder which is more than I can handle at the moment.
      Thanks for checking it out!

  • @jackfoxlock
    @jackfoxlock 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have had two of these clear practice locks and both broke like yours. I was able to un freeze the disks by rotating them individually with some effort. After that, they would not have to be picked to open. All you had to do was insert a blade and rotate the core to open it. Real cheap locks. You need
    to buy a real DD lock from Amazon to learn properly.

  • @lockloony4291
    @lockloony4291 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I had to make the same experience with a clear disc detainer. They are definitely only instructional locks, not training locks. The discs are too soft and the housing of the core can be deformed very easily. So, in the moment you picked the lock open, the first disc that goes out of line will jam the lock. And there is no way to re-lock it without that happening.
    I then bought another very cheap, but real, disc detainer lock, and I experimented a bit with it. I was very surprised when I found out that this one was so bad that I managed to rake it with a wafer rake for car locks. I do not recommend the method. It does quite some damage to the lock and can cause you trouble, because at some point, the original key can fail to work. I made a video about it, check my channel.
