According to Robert's Rules of Order the moderator cannot "fact check" anybody. The moderator must appear unbiased. The purpose of the debate is to allow the audience to decide without any prodding by the moderator.
The side that does not tell lies is furious that no fact-check would be done!
And I would add, to allow the candidates to state their positions. If say Biden's entire reason for running for President is based on nonsense, let him say so.

He also seems to conflate journalism, which requires factchecking, and being a moderator. The job of moderator isn’t the same as the job of journalist, even if they regularly select supposed journalists (actually activists) for that position. If you had competent candidates who were basing their candidacy on policy stances, wouldn't part of them debating each other also be them fact-checking each other? The problem we're seeing is these debates have in some ways gone beyond policies.
That's a lot for the candidates to have in their heads at any given point in time, especially when you talk about quoting candidates statements from x years ago. It's not like the moderators are actually the ones fact checking themselves. It's behind the scenes people doing the checking and relaying that information to the moderators, I would think.

It isn’t a journalists or opinion pushers job to call out candidates on their statements. If the candidates are properly prepared and knowledgeable they should be able to call out each other. Robby is right.
I would prefer having no moderators. Let the candidates ask their own questions like the lincoln douglas debates. 5/5/2 seems about right. 5 minute statement of policy or criticism of opponent. 5 min response w 2 min rebuttal. Then the other person gets a chance to do the same.

I’ll watch from a different source than CBS. They aren’t getting any ratings ( or advertisers) from me. Can’t believe Vance agreed to do the debate with CBS.
Vance is very tough. It doesn't matter where it is to him. He does regular interviews on CNN and MSNBC.
There isn't a mainstream media source that will be unbiased and fair. Especially to a conservative. There isn't a media source that isn't in Kamala's pocket that she would agree to interview or debate on. So here we are.
Vance can hold his own with any mainstream media and with so much class!! But I understand what you're saying, CBS sucks out loud!
One angle that doesn't seem to be talked about. How about we better prepare candidates. There are certain questions that an impartial moderator should be expected to ask. I'm probably one of the few that feel that both candidates should receive a pool of questions ahead of time. The ability to come up with a quick and witty respose is not what what we are measuring here. Whether you can think on your féet has little to do with presidential decision making. I want to see evidence of careful, well thought out reasoning.
I think that is accomplished in interviews where many candidates from both sides are presented the questions before hand. Now having thought about it… I seem to recall people complaining about such interviews.

No. The majority propblem is this society just going off of what they hear and not educating themselves thoroughly. It would seem with ease of access did not come the ability to study better. Yet another thing that sounded good on paper, and failed in practice.
There is no issue with fact checking. Saying that others should just do their own research only helps the party spreading massive inaccuracy while relying on the fact that in this generation of TLDR, lots of people simply will not check facts or use common reasoning.

Fact checking should be the burden of the debaters and that has always been the case in debates. Moderators aren't there to debate the debaters.
Niall Stanage says that the moderators don't actually have a way to effectively fact check in real time and that the fact checking they do is ideologically tainted. He also says that he is in favor of the moderators fact checking. What???
When you say fact check Niall but then say you may not be ready for all things to fact check that makes the idea of fact checking very unfair even if you think it's not partisan.

I think unbiased fact checking as it comes, is a staple during debates. Otherwise candidates will just continue to throw lies and the American people won’t know the difference. it amazes me how the right doesn’t want this when they’re the ones wanting to clean the swamp.
Hold the candidate to account if the lie is obvious if the information is erroneous, if the information said is so egregiously wrong that it can cause harm to either a community or person. Otherwise don’t have to debate.
Media credibility is already gone, so they better not gang up on Vance in this one after the terrible last debate....

What is the issue with fact checking? Simply do not tell bs and you’re fine. All I’ve read here are excuses for a behavior that is unacceptable on either side. As an independent voter, it seems interesting the affiliation that applauds and defends the lack of fact checking and the affiliation that is upset that it will not be present… it really says a lot.
