Its important for our leadership to publicly recognize the gravity of the catastrophic damage and death. They seem so passionate about Ukraine but not much of a reaction here. Do some press conferences. Make an effort. Its their job. That is what they are paid to do.

Agreed. There used to be a time, where you knew you were going to hear something from a president fairly quick in circumstances like these, even if they didn't travel immediately. I'm also thinking of Hawaii and East Palestine, OH. I feel like that's been lost in this administration, maybe the previous one, too (I might have memory-holed that, but the previous administration can take responsibility for East Palestine).

NC foothill resident here. The media is not showing you the real damage here. It’s beyond what most people can comprehend. We have literally lost whole towns at this point. There are full communities trapped on the tops of mountains where the roads and bridges have been washed out on both sides and no way to leave but by air. No Power. No Internet. No Water. No Cell Service. Speaking for my fellow North Carolinians: Washington DC, please send help. Our people are dying.

It depands as I have streaming and I have been watching local media out of that region and other states like Tennessee which received a lot of that rain water as well causing flooding and destruction there and they didn't even get the brunto of the storm revealing how terribly bad it must be for North Carolina if this were the runoff. But the national media has done an exceptionally bad job covering this which is why I keep saying we need a network for the locals and whensome tragedy hits you shift to the local coverage from that area. The local media at least still addresses facts and actual investigative reporting where the national news is often just opinions and views about what the local news channels are creating for them. We can do what the national news does better ourselves which is why streaming is popping and national news viewership is dying as we're figuring this out. I do hope all of you get the help you need and I dread hearing there are more dead as we went from 11 to over 100 it seemed in just a few hours and there's still what, over a thousand people still missing. I mean Good Lord this could be one of the biggest stories of the 2000's and the national media gave more coverage to Trump saying Haitians are eating cats in Springfield Ohio.

When asked about aid Biden said he had done everything he can do and there wouldn't be more. I am from NC and I lived in one of the worst hit areas for decades. I have spoken to many of my friends in the mountains the area is decimated. Most people didn't lose their homes but the roads are blocked or completely gone. Food and water is in short supply and water service likely will not be restored for weeks. In Asheville which is the biggest city there is currently only one way in and one way out. Some of the major routes in won't be restored for a year. I don't think anyone needs to go there unless they are bringing in supplies and a visit from a politician wouldn't be helpful. That said, American citizens are hurting and regardless of politics this response is pathetic.

I fear that Stanage and Souve are suffering from cognitive decline since neither seem to remember Trump's grand response to hurricane Maria which hit Puerto Rico in September 2017. Trump's historic response would surely contrast with the response of the current administration. Even I, at 67, possess the memory to recall those events of 2017 when a devastating category 5 hurricane hit the tiny island. Who can forget Trump's rapid response involving dozens of boxes of paper towels? He actually went to storm ravaged Puerto Rico in person to demonstrate his amazing leadership and tossed the victims paper towels to clean up the damage of this deadly category 5 hurricane. Why can't Soave and Stanage even remember this amazing example of leadership and give credit where credit is due: to Donald Trump, Towel Tosser in Chief! Let us not also forget what Trump accomplished there in a year. Millions of dollars of water were still out on the tarmac. Homeless people were still living under blue tarps. 62% of applicants were denied assistance to rebuild their homes. Fortunately for us, we were under the decisive leadership of Trump-Towel Tosser in Chief. I wish I could say kudos to Soave and Stanage for their cutting edge award winning journalism. Perhaps it is simply their cognitive decline that keeps them from remembering Trump's response--towel tossing--to a hurricane so long ago,

My family is in AUGUSTA, Ga and it looks like a disaster area. FEMA just arrived today they have trees down, no power, water, or gas for homes or cars! This is disgusting!

If they can't get to you, because trees are down, they can't drive in tankers to bring fuel. Understand the frustration, but they can't be there in an hour when the roads are gone. At least you still have cell service abs are connected

What happened to local services? Surely local power and water services should have the ability to start repairs. Or are they wiped out too? Our infrastructure within each state is sadly ignored. 😢

NC and Florida have local government, senators, house of representative, which is there to help everyone in their state recover from disaster, the money is in the State budget. The National Guard for your state is there to help deliver food and supplies. Where are your local government, senators, and house of representative you voted for them.

@@CindyTemple FEMA has been there even before the hurricane hit, doing their job. They have SIX states to cover, not just one, and over 3,000 people on the ground. Trump does an hour trip, tying up resources and disappears again. How much did that little trip cost him? Did he open his checkbook and maybe donate $1 million to the Red Cross and other organizations helping there? Then again, this is the man barred from operating any charities because he STOLE money from his own cancer charity.

The point is that Biden should be front and center briefing the country on what is being done. Yes he doesn’t need to go there right now, but needs to keep us informed as to what is being done: fema mobilized, etc. That is Trump’s point. He, Trump, made a point to mention it on Sunday, why haven’t the other 2 done so?
My opinion is because they really don’t care as they are just figure-heads not true leaders.

One of the most effective things a leader can do is being seen where the action or intensity is occurring. Its not just political theater, Its leadership. A leader no shying away from looking at it directly, recognizing the worst, addressing the necessities of a situation and voicing they will be taking action. They even pointed out something that contradicted their statements. Bush did a fly over followed by massive misuse of funding. not enough of the leaders during Katrina had boots on the ground seeing where resources were truly needed so you had lack of resources some places and too much in others with massive waste. If you do the right things, you deserve points scored, partisan or not.

Niall may not fully understand how American bureaucratic institutions work. They are huge, redundantly-staffed institutions that move at a snail's pace. When top-level POTUS/VPOTUS VIPs are on scene, it catalyzes these institutions to move much faster because "the boss" is watching in person. That's the benefit of a visit from a sitting elected official. Right now, access to the hardest hit areas have limited access because of the terrain and flooding. Most of the aid we have seen moving in has been from private citizens, businesses (helicopter companies), and the NCANG. And yes, we are all acutely aware of the irony of billions in aid freely flowing to foreign armies (the proposed "border bill" was over 74% military aid) while our friends upstream wait for water, food and restoration of communications.
