  • Gorillas tend to be frequently employed at while-you-wait oil change places. They like to crank down on drain plugs and especially oil filters. If you're trying to get your oil filter off and you're out of options, this might work for you.

    I’ve been a mechanic my whole working life. Nothing makes me more angry than having to do an oil filter that’s torque down like that. Whoever did that should never be allowed to work on cars

      Alec Jones exactly. I use to get my oil change at the dealership, and I don’t know if they ever changed the filter or not, but the filter was stuck badly, it took me like 15 min to get it off. Given it was my first time doing a oil and filter change, as I was tired of paying so much.

      Yup. A fucking joke. Just picked up my car, goen to do an oil change and my chain wrench to get it off literally wripped through the oil filter and managed to snap itself. Got oil everywhere and a mangled oil filter that will not come off :(

    Very similar thing happened to me this morning. Told myself, lemme do a quick oil change before work. We don't have a garage so I opted to wait for sunrise. First oil change of this (used) car as well.
    Our sweet little filter would NOT come off. The wrench actually tore through it. So oil all over, hooray.
    Ended up having to use some penetrating oil, let it set in, then use some channel locks. Also ended up being late for work. Good fun. lol

    Thank you for this video. I never would have thought of this.
    I bought a car recently and the previous owner had taken it to Super Lube for the oil change. Not only did they over tighten the filter they also used a cheap ass filter. I have three different oil filter wrenches and none of them would budge the filter and one of them actually dented the side of the filter with the amount of pressure I put on it.
    Luckily I ended up not needing to drill. The filter they put on was so cheap I was able to poke a hole in the side with a metal pick just by pushing on it. I also poked a couple air holes so the oil would drain faster. Then I took a phillips screwdriver and punched it up through the drain hole in the side of the filter. That gave me enough leverage I was able to get the filter off. This video saved me wasting money on additional oil filter wrenches.

    My filter was so stuck that i tried several methods, and here's what I eventually did: Drill a small hole in the lowest point to drain, and another hole in the tip of the filter to let the air in so it drains faster. Once it's drained enough, figure out the best angle to jam a screwdriver into it, and drill the entry hole (I did it roughly half way along the filter). Ram or hammer a thick screwdriver into it (right through if you can). Twist. The amount of effort is much less than you think it will be, once you've got the torque of the screwdriver acting on it. Messy but it worked. Happy twisting :]

      Man I tried this and it started shredding the wall of the can, it wouldn't have worked in my case...
      I didn't have good leverage from the side anyway. I had to get the ratchet cup, the top was shredded by the time I got it...
      So I had to drill holes into the cup, then I was able to put the cup over the top of the filter and then ram 3 large screws into the filter through the cup..
      I should likely make a video explaining it for people like me.
      I was thinking I was going to have to get snips and snip the whole thing to shreds to get it off

    Here it is midnight and I just finished changing my oil in a 2009 Silverado. I had to use an 18 inch breaker bar to loose the oil drain plug because Magnus Von Magnusons little brother Smegmus got passed over for promotion at the local oil change center so it seemed like a good idea to take his frustrations out by friction welding my oil drain bolt to the aluminum threads of the pan. But the worst part was replacing the oil filter. I did the same procedure you did except I used a hammer and screwdrivers. During all this
    Mess it’s been raining and Im outside in the driveway. I had to resort to using a punch and hammer near the threads to move it 1/128” at a time because the lower part of the filter housing was tearing out. By now my left ear was filled with water and lower half is soaked. I told my wife happy birthday when I was finished and apologized for not making it to the store to cook her a birthday dinner.
    And to think this could of all been avoided if Smegmus had got that promotion .

    I hate getting any oil change done at a shop, always done them myself. With something like that, best way is to try to remove it with a special filter wrench that fits, and slides over the notches. If you dont have it, I usually just use channel locks. The oil filters dont even need drilling to pry a screwdriver into. Just hammer it a few times, and it will go through. It wont damage the seat. Oil filters are pretty tough

    You're in trouble when you get a quick lube place that overtightens and uses a cheap filter with super thin steel. I used a pair of giant slip joint pliers and sandpaper on the end cap to be able to get it off. Fortunately I had clearance to be able to do that.

  • @1995dresser

    Go to Walmart and get a Pair of Oil Filter Pliers. Strap wrenches sometimes slip so wrap a Piece of sand paper around the filter (grit side on the filter ) and place the strap wrench over it . that's why its very important to Lube the O ring on the filter before installing it .

    I had one oil filter when I worked at the dealership, it twisted it right off at the base trying to get it off. the customer put it on with a wrench and tighten it right down. Ended up using an air chisel to drive the oil filter plate around to get the rest of the filter off. This is plan C after the can and the filter comes off and the plate doesn’t.

    Always check to see if the gasket comes off with/when taking the oil filter (off), and if there is a gasket on the new oil filter when putting the new oil filter back on.

    • @tylerpripps4969
      @tylerpripps4969  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good tip. I always touch the gasket of the old filter to the gasket of the new filter. this makes sure that both gaskets are present and accounted for and also lubricates the new gasket with the small skim of oil transferred so that the new filter torques on appropriately. Thanks for watching!

    God knows how many oil-changes I've done, but luckily one time I had to do something like that. Even had to spin the filter at least 1 rev before I could take the rest by hand...!!
    I used a flathead screwdriver to make the hole. Messy too, but didn't sling it around as your drill ;)
    Shortage of space on the car I had to do it on, so hade to make 3 holes (well, 6 in total).

      I think that tends to be the more common method. Or using an ice pick. The boss that mounts the filter on that engine didn't seem to robust so I didn't want to risk beating on it too much. @tylerpripps4969  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand your point. However, even as incredibly stuck this filter was, there was no real damage to the body of the filter once it was removed. They're pretty tough with their multiple layers. I'm certainly open to alternatives though. Got any?

      Tyler Pripps filter wrench...

  • @bobthompson4319
    @bobthompson4319 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The farther anyway from the engine you out your hole or screw driver the more the torque is put in a sideways motion and could break off the the threaded part . If you have a large pair of channel locks and can get them on it you can use them and crush it a little bit so they have a flat spot and get it off that way. And places like jiffy lube, grease monkey etc. are the ones who are most likely to do this because they don't want to pay if something happens. Also if you have a filter gasket that sticks on there and you don't notice it before putting on a new one its completely your own fault. In high school automotive they even teach you to clean the mating surface and on some filter boxes they tell you to clean the surface. And if you just get the oil filter socket for your car it will always get it off. Theres also one that has 3 wide teeth that tighten and squeeze more the harder you turn the wrench. Oil changes are fun arnt they. Lol

    The best way to do it is wrap a strap(I used the handle of my dogs leash) around the filter, clamp it tight with vise grips, then twist the vise grips- it will cause the strap to tighten and twist the strap on that direction, I also used the handle of my ratchet to get extra torque on the vise grips. The biggest problem with your method is if it fails you won't be able to drive until you get it off.

    I switched to using K&N filters on my vehicles 2, and 4 wheels. Darned more expensive, but better inside and out. Hard metal bodies not aluminum foil, and they have a nut welded onto the top so a socket can be used to remove. The filters should never be that tight to need a nut turn it... but there are vehicles where the filter is in a darned hard spot to reach. Then some OCD people : ) use a torque wrench to tighten them to spec.

    If there's oil on the can, clean it off first with the likes of garage hand cleaner so the wrench gets a good grip.
    The likes of drills and screwdriver levers don't work in tight spacers.

    If a filter wont come off with a strap there is no way poking a screwdriver in it will work, it will just tear the arse off of it. If that filter was tight this would not have worked

    • @tylerpripps4969
      @tylerpripps4969  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Don't tell ME it wasn't tight. You can LITERALLY see the screwdriver bending as I was torqueing it off. The strap wrench I had would not work in this application because of limited access from the sway bar. Similarly the transmission line was blocking access for a jaw gripper. During over 40 years of changing oil filters, including a lot that are much larger and MUCH tighter than this one, I have never had to crush (pliers), drill or poke a hole in a filter or otherwise bend or destroy it. You may have tried 2 or 3 wrenches, but obviously not the right one. I've thrown away a bunch of crappy filter wrenches, but I didn't replace them with a screwdriver. Judging from the video, the filter here is not nearly as tight as some of mine have been. I've removed filters with a filter wrench, that required an 18" breaker bar, using both hands, and bracing myself against the vehicle to break loose, but still never had to tear up the filter. And, no mess.

    • @tylerpripps4969
      @tylerpripps4969  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      agreed, there is no replacement for the right tool... unless you've already drained the oil from your only mode of transportation, and the nearest "right tool store" is 20 miles away.
