Great video. One thing to also do is make sure the USB port is set up to allow transferring of files. If not, you won't see the HD or USB Stick as options. Settings >> Developer options >> Default USB Configuration >> Transferring files (selected).
1. Go to settings 2. Click About phone 3. Then Software information 4. See build number click it repeatedly 5. Developer mode activated @lelandbarreiro5185
... and just the same as always, Samsung thinks they know what every user wants and goes ahead just changing all settings to rearrange things to how they want it. Absolutely stuffed-up all my photo and song folders that I had meticulously organised in a specifc order, just like Microsoft - "We know what you want!". Wrong you only think you know.
Finally. An instructive video, simply yet perfectly explained so that unsavvy folks get it. Also, this way is much better and safer than using the cloud because you're in control. Why rely on any tech giant to save/protect your stuff when you can do it yourself. ?
Great video, Sam. Thank you! One important point I'd like to add is that the external drive must be formatted using Exfat. If the drive is using the NTFS file system, Android smartphones won't recognize it. 🙂
Just tried it and it worked!!!! I have usb c to c cable so that made it easier too. I used to try to back up to our Mac with no avail or lots of issue. This is literally life saving and time saving!!! Thank you so much for sharing

I do not have the adapter and have tried using my laptop and external drive. I have done it before, but it's not working at the moment.
After searching for a long time, I was so VERY glad to find these easy-to-follow instructions. Suggestion: Finish by showing how to remove the USB drive Safely. Even though I do it safely on my computers, I was unfamiliar with the phone and messed up. 😞

Hello, very informative and to the point. Thank you! I do have a question though, how to transfer google photos from my samsung to the external hard drive?
When I attempt to back up my phone to the gard drive, it asks about encryption of the data and that I can only access the info when logging in to my Samsung account. Any idea how to stop the encryption?
Excellent 👍🏾 video which I followed to the letter. I copied all my phone files to my external hard drive. I then proceeded to factory reset and reset my phone because I was having problems with it. How do I restore my contacts from the back I have on the external drive please. I have copied all the backup back to the phone but the contacts still seem to be missing. Any tips would be very much appreciated. Many thanks indeed

Will it back up a micro sad card in the phone? Found out it will and you can back up to a larger capacity one and have extra space to use . Galaxy phones are very easy and have the software built in.
Multiple full system backups to the same external hard drive will overwrite the existing folder or create sequentially named new folders? When restoring to a new replacment phone, if multiple folders exist, the source folder will be the newest one the fon selects (or will the user choose the folder).
Awesome job you're very slow about it and understand everything you said if we have to go back and we can do it again which I probably sure I'm sure I will but well done well done thank you so much I really was very helpful

Hello Sam...Have you had any experience with the SanDisk SSD? After purchasing mine last summer, I've read many people have had serious issues with this particular device. I haven't used mine yet, so that's why I'm concerned about this. Thank you, and greetings from Northern Kentucky, USA.
Hi Frank, I have only used SanDisk USB drives before which have always worked for me. I haven't had any experience with their SSDs though. If you're backing up really important things that you can't live without, I would always recommend having backups of it on multiple devices. For example have it backed up on a Hard drive(or multiple hard drives for redundancy), stored in the cloud (like Google drive or Google photos) and or on your PC. This way if your hard drive fails for some reason, you have another copy.
thank you for the nice video very good sharing, may i know how to format my external hard drive western digital because it is read only NTFS help please if someone know how to transfer photo and video from samsung phone to external hard drive thank you
My Toshiba Canvio Advance shows up on my files but says that this is a read only because it is formed on NTFS. When I go to my files and then USB at the three dots it does not give me the option to reformat. It only says unmount.
Thank you. I have a Samsung A22, and your backup did not seem to be encrypted? Is this normal. Other similar videos advise the backup will be encrypted?

What does the adapter really do? I'm trying to upload pictures onto this one external hard drive from an android and am wondering why a regular USBC cord won't work. I want to make sure it's the adapter and not the hard drive itself before I buy a different one (I have the Inateck FEUN3NS-1).
Yep, you should be able to open most files on a computer, like your photos, documents, music and videos. There may be some system files that will only work on your phone but everything else should open fine on a computer.

Hi, Have you done a video -- how to restore to Samsung s8 phone from ex hdd ?? Your video " Backing up made easy - Samsung Phone to Ex hdd is fantastic
It detects my Samsung external drive as an "SD CARD" for some weird reason? And when I click to backup, after 5 minutes it stops the process for some reason. Thoughts?
If doing this on a PC, even with all this enabled, I've found it sometimes takes a few minutes for the PC to recognize the device and install any needed drivers. Type "services" in your taskbar's search box, click the Services app, and ensure PNp is enabled (Plug and Play) right click it, hit: Automatic, then Start, Apply and OK. Re plug your phone-in and your PC should find it set up for your device. It will automatically find, download and install drivers for YOUR computer to work with YOUR phone.
If I backup all data will I be able to down load all my Android Apps, not just files like photos, into my new phone rather than install them manually from there App Store

You never even said which phone ur using or if it works with all phones or just that one. You also didnt mention which external hd ur using. Links outdated. Everything u actually explained is painfully obvious. Worthless video.
DO THIS more than once so you have multiple backups to choose from!! Samsung and Google can lose your data OR continually backup corrupt files that they fucked up via the backup/restore resulting in missing or duplicate montage of data. You migjht even want to TURN OFF the BS auto backing up from both Samsung and Google.

That was a fantastic tip. Thank you so much for that!
1. Go to settings
2. Click About phone
3. Then Software information
4. See build number click it repeatedly
5. Developer mode activated
@lelandbarreiro5185
Go to settings, find about phone, software info, then tap Build number like 10 times and it will unlock developer settings.
