  • To celebrate the release of Castlevania Nocturne we look to the most brutal entry in the history of Castlevania video games. Castlevania Lords of Shadow began a new universe for the franchise and covers the origin of Dracula. In this retrospective review I give an overview of the story and discuss the gameplay mechanics of Lords of Shadow. This reboot is influence by popular series such as Devil May Cry and God of War. This is ironic as Metroid and Castlevania are among the most influential franchises in terms of modern game design.

This game is literally a Masterpiece and I absolutely mean that, its one of my all time favorite games, I love practically everything about it from the Length to the Story to the voice cast, I mean all u gotta say to me is Patrick Stewart and Jason Isaacs and I'm onboard, though Jason Isaacs isn't in it near enough but playing Satan made his short time more memorable, Robert Carlyle was also really good though Gabriel reminds me so much of Gerard Butler who is one of my favorite actors so I rather he did the voice but Robert Carlyle does more than good voicing Gabriel...Graphics usually are not my main concern in a game but its so beautiful I'd put it in my top 10 reasons i love this game...the story is worthy of awards and even though it borrows much from mainly God of War & Shadow of the Colossus but again it does it in such an amazing way that even with my love for those games I really had more fun with those aspects in this game... specifically battling those Titans or Colossus that after the first one I was hoping for the next one asap and they didn't disappoint but what did disappoint me is there was only 3 but overall it's best, they used it but not too much, the dlc's are almost as amazing as the base game and did an amazing job of filling in how Gabriel got to where he was at the after credits scene and what happens in that short scene is no question one of my all time favorite moments of all the games I've played since i was 5 playing Atari & NES... Mirror of Fate for the 3DS is worthy of coming after this Masterpiece but damn the second game was a major letdown and though it's grown on me it doesn't come close to this game right here..what more can I say, I absolutely love this game to the point it irks me it never got anywhere near the amount of love it deserved but everyone from my younger brother to a couple of my boys agreed with my love for it and my younger brother possibly loves it more than I do and he was reluctant to even play it but I kept hounding him and when he played it for a few hours he wouldn't the shut the f+ck up about how much he loves it

Man, if I agree! Best Game Ever!
You are right, Lords of Shadow 2 cannot be compared to the First One ; but it remains awesome. At least, in my humble opinion.
Speaking of Lords of Shadow 1, the story, the characters, the environments, the music...they are simply magnificent!
I am glad to share my idea for this Absolute Masterpiece, with people like you. Thank you kindly. 😊

nice vid, as for the Satan villain reveal, they hint at it a bit through the story with the Abbot rambling about him being taunted in his dreams (prob the only time the guy has clarity) and Baba Yaga mentioning 'King of the Angels'. while i get the dlc seeming like a mistake, i like that it goes more into how Gabriel becomes Dracula and gets so much power from an old god/demon.
also really love Gabriel's story across the trilogy

The second game had alot 9r story potential. Maybe the main story would be inspired by a real story about Vlad the impaler and Van Helsing being the main villain.

Even though it's my favourite game of all time, this a very fair review of it so well done! I can definitely understand the flaws you pointed out, I just think that they bothered me less while the highs wowed me more. Seeing it where it is on your tierlist hurts my soul but I get it. Looking forward to other games you'll review next!

Glad to hear you love the game! What aspects make it your favorite of all time? I think if I played it when it originally launched my nostalgia would be higher. I've played some other similar games recently and the art design in Lords of Shadows is definitely far superior.

@@VirtualLegacy I think the story, visuals and music really sell the whole experience for me. It helps that hack and slash are my favourite genres of games as well and it worked perfectly well as a hack and slash / spectacle fighter.
As you say, the art design is top notch and I loved the varied settings of each level, really made the levels have a unique identity.
It's really the only game with all the qualities I like. Thinking of its contemporaries, pre-reboot Kratos wasn't a very relatable character, Bayonetta, MGR and DMC were more about style than telling a serious story, Dante's Inferno was mostly hellish landscapes in different flavours. Lords of Shadow had the dark fantasy setting with a tragic story, stellar graphics and outstanding soundtrack and hack and slash gameplay which held up fairly well over the whole experience. I'm sure others can point to other games with all those qualities but personally it's the game that resonated most with my personal preferences.

@@corkraddish Sorry for the late reply! Coming right up.
      - Soulstice from 2022, seems to have gameplay inspirations from DMC5, DmC: DMC and Bayonetta. Has some downsides, like dragging on a bit in either the middle or the beginning and some annoying enemy types, but a *lot* to offer on story, weaponry and general gameplay.
      - Genokids. Upcoming, rock band fends off alien invasion, band members are the "styles" to switch between.
      - Charlie Murder. From back when the Xbox 360 was the hip thing but is on Steam as well)
      - Immortal: And the Death that Follows. Has yet to have a release date. A friend of mine described it as a Hindu Mad Max Beat-em-Up,
      - Clash: Artifacts of Chaos. Zeno Clash prequel, plays a bit like God Hand in some ways. Has you finding different martial arts styles and individual attacks to customize your own style with. Awesome art direction.
      - Gori: Cuddly Carnage. Syntethic toy cat in a kind of skating take on a hack-and-slash game, because the main weapon is a segmented laser chainsaw hoverboard to fight your way through a toy apocalypse with.
      - Kings of Hell. 3D Beat-em-Up with a cartoony art style and quite spicy character designs. Main group consists of demon wrestlers and there's some other flamboyant/skimpy fellows, as well as spooky scary skeletons, a sapient demonic car and an Egyptian mafia don with shadow powers.
I believe bosses can be playable characters too.
      - Enenra. Cyborg ninja tomfoolery. Has yet to come out.
      - Yasuke: A Lost Descendant. Colorful sci-fi samurai tomfoolery. Has yet to come out.
Hope these may prove fun and interesting and that you may spread word on them!

Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2 is my favorite game in history today since its magnificent launch on consoles PS3, Xbox 360 and PCs, I love hacking slash with open world RPG exploration, Castlevania City and Dracula's Castle, Gabriel Belmont transformed into Dracula and Trevor Belmont as Alucard battling Both united against Satan'Lucifer and his Acolytes, as well as Zobek The Grim "Death" Reaper
himself... And I don't care about the opinion of any fan critic who criticizes this masterpiece of gameplay, combat, and upgrades, the story of the trilogy concluded with a flourish, stealth sessions that I'm passionate about, a story that makes a lot of sense, yes, anyone who doesn't understand is totally imbecile
crude, tacky, weird , media illiterate and stupid... It's a game Really perfect and I don't care if anyone's opinion goes against mine...
Best three-dimensional game in history, not just the Castlevania saga...
