Nomenclature of steroids

Steroids contain a basic cyclopentano perhydro phenanthrene nucleus which can be named as gonane .The ring size can be further increased to produce estrane, androstane, pregnane,cholane, cholestane, ergostane and stigmastane nuclei.

It is by convention all carbons are counted in steroids. That's why they are classified with different names based on total number of carbons.
