I think that the potential for AI technology to improve the effectiveness and quality of patient care is really exciting, particularly in diagnosing and preventing diseases. As a medical student learning about medical ethics, I can't help but think of the ethical implications of incorporating AI into the healthcare system. I am concerned that excessive automation in the healthcare system may take out the personal interaction between doctors and patients, which is vital in empathetically addressing patient concerns and building trust. I appreciate that the video mentions protecting patient privacy, as sensitive patient information in the wrong hands could cause harm. I hope that big tech companies and healthcare systems will actually be able to do this. Another ethical concern to consider is the potential for an AI to develop biases. If prejudicial data is used in the training data, then the AI will likely incorporate that bias into its code. This will likely exacerbate health disparities already seen in the healthcare system. This is why AI developers and healthcare professionals should diligently seek, detect and root out these biases.
