    Nice review, Chris. When I mentioned Kubrick on Twitter I was also thinking about the score to this episode. The almost comic aestheticization of violence in some of the more brutal moments through the seemingly out of place classical theme was so very Clockwork Orange (not to mention the white-wearing Droogs of the Guilty Remnant!). The intro scene to this whole season also had a very 2001 Monolith feel to it. And I think the differences between the "primitive origins" scene in 2001 and what Lindelof gave us here is telling for the thematic interests of the series as a whole. In 2001, it was a story of how something unexplained led to technological advancements, and consequently, violence. In the s2 opener, the supernatural intervention led to a quest for survival and, with the adoption of the baby, perhaps new bonds of community.
    Anyways, food for thought. Great work! Always enjoy your analysis.

    I loved this episode 10/10- The card that came with the flowers saying, 'Get well soon' with the Orphan well and a person tossing a coin on the cover was a nice touch. Mary's 'It's a boy' balloons was cool too. The guy on the bridge could be that Burton guy from Australia. I think he told kevin 'They won't leave you alone". I'm pretty sure the last word he whispered was alone. Did Mary die and she was starting her international assassin mission? Can Kevin go back and guide Mary home?

    I'd really like to know the significance of the clothing in the closet. I picked up on the Priest in the elevator and when going to visit with senator Patti he walks past what seems to be himself in his policemens uniform with a black bag over his head totally confused by this if any could shed some light on this I would really appreciate it, thanks.

    +Chris Hartwell I really liked the part where Kevin went to ask Virgil why he's still there(purgatory) and tells him that he killed Patty and Virgil doesn't seem to have any clue what he's talking about. Also, we see Virgil kill the same bird Virgil said he hoped they didn't catch earlier in the episode. It's then that Kevin realizes what's happened and he asks Virgil if he drank the water to which Virgil replies, "I was just so thirsty", indicating that consumption of the water in this plane of existence causes memory loss? Either way, I thought it was genius the way every part, such as this one, make you think and rethink every episode and what each and every thing means and the easter eggs and what and IF they hold true or important meaning to every character's storylines. I can't wait for the finale! This show has taken my attention away from shows such as The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Banshee and even Mr.Robot. Of all of them, my hat foes off to The Leftovers for making tv funner than I ever remember it being!

    Great review as always. The score and themes in this episode was dedicated to all of our favorite thrillers and dramas like The Shining, Taxi Driver, Poltergeist, The Godfather, James Bond, the fade transitions from scene to scene. I just LOVED it!
    A few things I noticed:
    The lie detector interrogation scene reminded me of John Murphy so much. Why was Kevin telling the truth so important?
    Kevin Sr. mentioned he took a hallucinogenic Gods Tongue. Was this a way of letting us know that Kevin was simply hallucinating and not in purgatory?
    When Virgil met Kevin in the parking garage, did you notice he was driving the same kind of car (white benz) the girls were driving when they disappeared?
    The indigenous people and the bird in the opening scene of S02E01 can no longer be ignored. When Kevin returned the ground was rumbling, like when the Murphys were all sitting at the dinner table and felt the table shaking, suggesting that these rumblings happen all the time.

    Kevin did not know the suit represented an international assassin . He also goes back to try and maybe pick something else, but the other clothes were not there anymore. Also, "the water there HAS an effect" ... the water there , is not in Jarden, Texas. So does that mean that not only the water in Jarden has powers, but the water everywhere?

  • @Panyc333
    @Panyc333 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    A couple things that make me think Kevin's experience was more supernatural rather than psychosomatic.
    The bird. Kevin had no connection or idea about the bird and it was in the hotel.
    Reading. Kevin had full cognitive control and was able to read and recognize letters. This is very uncommon while dreaming
    Virgil. Kevin had no knowledge of Virgil's death to "imagine" him to be there
    Dead. He was dead and buried in the fucking ground.
    Discuss..

    • @IaDyne
      @IaDyne 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know why anyone would think it's anything else but supernatural.

      +Matt Something
      The bird: You know that Virgil had this huge bird cages infront of his trailer? When Erika brought the pie to Virgil he asked her if she would like to take a bird with her. Meaning: he knew that Erika stole his birds from him. Where else would she find all of these birds to kill? Catch them? Kevin making a connection between Vigil and the bird.
      Also Kevin knows that he is there because he "died" and has to be brought back. Obviously Kevin is aware of that and therefore he is reminded of it again and again in his dreamlike coma: in some cultures a bird being trapped inside a house is a sign of death. That's why everybody at the hotel is going nuts because of a little bird.
      Reading: It's from Kevins point of view. So Kevin knowing what's written there and showing the audience isn't the same as reading.
      Virgil: He told Kevin he would be guided on the other side and Virgil is the only one he knows who's been there and could make sense of it all. So of course he suddenly is there to guide him and make sense of it all.
      Dead: Do we know that? Is Virgil an expert in making poison? Also Michael was "camping" infront of the place where Kevin was buried so I guess he was in a coffin-like box and the earthquake "woke him up".
      I want to believe that it's Kevins mind trying to make sense of it all. And I love that there is more than one way to watch the series. And every point of view is reaching for explanations. That's great television. I'm glad they took the extra time they needed to finnish the scripts.

    • @Panyc333
      @Panyc333 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Sebastian Reng Kevin has no reason to make any connection with the birds and the hotel. Why would he manifest a bird in this "purgatory/dreamstate" at all. Just because Virgil had a bunch of bird in a cage. That's a stretch. Also assuming Erika was stealing Virgil's birds is a big assumption too. Not confirmed.
      If the reading was from Kevin perspective in a dream the writing would especially be incoherent. The side of your brain that processes reading is non fictional during REM.
      I'll give you the Virgil thing though even Kevin is confused why he is there reinforcing his belief that everyone and everything in the hotel has died or is dead. Kevin did not know that Virgil killed himself only that he would guide him. Kevin sr guided Kevin Jr. and to the best of our knowledge he is not dead. Why would he make that assumption about Virgil?

    • @IaDyne
      @IaDyne 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Matt Something Or maybe David Burton was Kevin Sr.'s guide and helped Kevin Sr. to get Kevin to take patti to the well, where David eventually was there waiting for him. Kevin Sr. said he was in the same room, which i interpreted as he was doing the same thing as Kevin: riding his adversaries as well.

      +IaDyne That's a very good point. I didn't really think of the connections there. This show is just on a level that a lot of shows aren't on right now, and most never reach! Lindeloff is a virtuoso when it comes to mysteries that keep us guessing until the end, but I think and feel that The Leftovers will forever be known as his masterpiece!

I have never liked a show so much since Lost. Thankfully my mother had HBO on demand! so last night I watch eps. 8 and how absurd was kevins hotel fiasco? I mean come on....the little girl being pati and him being an assassin? wtf mate

    I decided to watch your other reviews on this season, because it's just such a damn good tv series, and I like seeing more opinions. Anyway, my thoughts on some of the things... and I'm doing it for this episode because it's related to the "supernatural" element...
    Back in Season 1 Episode 2, there was a scene that made me think nothing in this story, including the Sudden Departure, was supernatural or Godly at all. In this episode, Kevin puts a bagel in a toaster, the bagel disappears, vanishes. He later comes back, opens the toaster, and finds the bagel inside. In this scene, the camera and music show that this is important and should be remembered. Disappeared... but is actually still inside. I believe those who departed are still there, if not inside the Earth itself.
    Season 2's opening showed that strange, somewhat unanswered scene, but in this scene... some things did go inside the Earth due to the earthquakes or whatever it is. Kind of a strange connection. Since that scene in S1, I've thought this was all scientific and explainable, hence the "remember". Remember what, exactly? How they actually left?
    It was Season 2 Episodes 8 and 10 that made me almost positive that this is not supernatural at all. Mary is not dead, and it could be argued that Kevin saw her in Purgatory because her soul was there, but I believe this was a psychological state, and if this is the case, he would see Mary if she is dead to him. Three people had major significance in Purgatory to Kevin, being Patti, Wayne, and Gladys, all of which had deaths that traumatized Kevin.
    Wayne, the real Wayne in Season 1 was not at all the same Wayne we saw in Purgatory. He was a leader, not a follower. He was a thinker, not a joker. This Wayne had nothing to do with Wayne at all... so if this were psychological, Kevin had only met Wayne for a few moments, and this first and only impression he had, could have drawn the character he saw in this Purgatorial world.
    Final thing I want to touch on is that Simon and Garfunkle karaoke scene in the Season 2 finale. Once we got to this in the finale, I thought for sure the supernatural was real in this universe, until Kevin sings. Psychology teaches us that when we see things, such as dreams, or when your eyes play tricks on you... even if they don't make sense to you, there's a connection to things you've experienced in your life. With the few clips given to the song as he sings, if this were all psychological, this song makes more sense than any other song.
    Like those few clips show, the lyrics have significance to things that have happened in his life, and not just anything, but those things that are either very important to him, or things that are very terrifying to him. In a psychological state, this makes perfect sense, as this actually would be the song picked, had it been in his head. I am almost 100% positive The Leftovers can all be explained, and isn't supernatural, but thankfully since we're now getting a Season 3, I get more episodes to overthink. ^^

    Great episode, and great review. It's been a while since Television was this fearless tbh. I don't really have anything to add to what's been said. This season has been pretty phenomenal to the extent that it really overshadows the first in many ways, and I'm really hoping that the writers can stick the landing with the two remaining episodes as matters back in the real world come to a head regarding the fate of the missing girls. Given the low viewership it's questionable despite the critical praise whether the show will be renewed but just as I'd welcome that I'd be just as happy if they simply deliver a great ending to a pretty flawless season and bow out gracefully.

      +IaDyne I wonder if Evie and her friends are in "Dr. Goodheart's" basement or something... a rational explanation of an event amidst supernatural happenings (would hearken back to Laura Palmer Twin peaks)... curious on other's take on her probable whereabouts? I know I'm behind, but I'm just getting ready to watch Ep9 (as I recover from what I just watched.) I know it JUST happened for me, but Ep8 may very well be one of the best episodes of television I've seen in a long time (ever?!)
    Quickly, I don't think Kevin was in traditional PURGATORY, or any other form of a "place between astral planes, blah blah blah." It's simply in his PSYCHOTIC (partially diagnosed by his Ex in the previous episode) mind... Plus, he just shut down his central nervous system with Virgil's cocktail, so there's that too.
    I just think it was a drug-induced dream-state (in an episode quite reminiscent of the 'Kevin Finnerty' episode of "The Sopranos".) Kevin Harvey (ha!) didn't know what was happening to him, but still seemed quite aware he was "elsewhere" and knew his goal and desired endgame.
    I dunno... I just don't feel like Elsewhere=Purgatory here. Even though there is a lot of religious references and things going on throughout the entire series, it seems the writers are sticking to a very secular view of the world they created. I mean, THE THEME SONG!!! Basically, I don't think Heaven/Purgatory/Hell will play into this show AT ALL. They're using the religious aspects to force viewers to want to conclude: RELIGION! There is just serious shit going on in Kevin's head. Can't wait to see!
    Oh! And thanks for mentioning "Twin Peaks" because most other reviewers don't. It's all I could think about while watching season 1!!! There felt like more parallels with that series than with "Lost," which I hated, but that's another story. :P
    Cheers!
    ~~Think I'll just let the mystery be.~~ ;)

    • @ChrisHartwell
      @ChrisHartwell  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Ostro1980 To the contrary, I think her being there actually further proves that Matt's story *is* true! After all, we see Mary in this place of purgatory/limbo... a place that (if you look at Virgil, the birds, and Kevin) people can and do return from.
      Also, traditionally, those who have no potential of coming back don't remain in limbo, they "move on completely".
      Just my thoughts anyway :)

    • @joerandella2526
      @joerandella2526 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ostro1980 Since she was receiving a gift just like Kevin did as soon as he arrived in that hotel, maybe it means she had just died, and if she did that must mean she died after Kevin and so will be revealed in next weeks episode. (Just my thoughts, I've only seen the episode once and didn't think too much about it.)

I wonder if anyone who dies with unresolved business gets a chance to DO BATTLE and return...Maybe she slipped into this space and has forgotten her mission?
