Good video. I've found very few videos here so far detailing the Species and Backgrounds, so thank you for that.
As for the backgrounds locking you into certain Classes, it depends on which way you direct your Character Build. If you are aiming for a Min-Max Character, yeah, I see your point. If you want more of an RP based Character, it makes no difference. The idea that I'm mulling over is a Tiefling Paladin with the Criminal Background. He was a low level "Mob" enforcer, leg breaker type guy. Then he met an Aasimar Paladin that was down on his luck and owed money to the Guild. The Tiefling went to collect and send a message. The Aasimar and Tiefling had one thing in common, they were both "Expected" to be something. The Aasimar was expected to be this "Holier than Thou" Goody-Goody and the Tiefling was expected to be a lowlife scoundrel. They became friends and the Paladin began to teach the Tiefling the ways of the Paladin. The Aasimar still got his leg busted, but the Tiefling learned that he didn't "Need" to be what society expected him to be. If you aim at more of an RP Style Character, you can make do with whatever bonuses that a Background has.
Now one question I have about the Background Feats, are they set in stone like the Ability Score boosts? I would rather have this Tiefling Paladin to have Tavern Brawler, rather than Alert. He would have started out more "Punchy-Punchy" than "Sneaky-Sneaky." I hope that question will be answered in your Feat video.
Thanks again for the Good Video, and good luck with the channel.

Glad you liked the video! I try to make sure my info is clear, concise, and thorough.
Sounds like a really interesting character idea! I like it a lot.
Unfortunately you can’t switch out the Origin feats for backgrounds. Of course, you could get DM approval to do so. My video on Origin feats will be out tomorrow!

Well done! I like the Soldier, not real smart but I can lift heavy things.

@@Zaknyfein True, but I really like the distinction between the Soldier and Guard.

which background is good for who:
Acolyte: god for no one. no class want Intellect AND Wisdom AND Charisma. My cleric want Wis, Strenght (if fighting with a strenght weapon), Dex (if fighting with a dex weapon) or Constitution (if full caster for concentration) My wizard want intelligence, Dex and Constitution, my Sorcerer want charisma dex and constitution... so no, acolyte is good for NO CLASS.
Artisan is good for no one. Yes the stats are great for a wizard (Dex and Intellect) for Crafter is an awfully bad origin feat and no one actually need crafter as a feat
Charlantan would be great for Sorcerer, bard, dex base paladin, warlock etc... EXCEPT that skilled is another extremly bad feat useless for most build making Artisan yet an other bad background
WotC really screwed it up with the background, they really failed. They wonderful idea of "we don't want player to feel obligated to take a particular specie for a particular class" (not all barbarian most be an half orc) simply got moved to the background where all sorcerer will be elven wayfarer (since perception remains a mandatory skill for any optimized build, who want to survive the first goblin ambush)
To all the RPer out there saying that you don't have to min-max your character and they will enjoy playing their zealous barbarian acolyte because the flavor is great. here is my question for you. Why would your zealous barbarian acolyte couldn't have work physically hard in the church he grew up in, carrying the heavy load to help the priest and stuff, giving him +2 strenght and +1 constitution. RP wise he still grew up in a church with the priest serving a God... but he could still get useful stat for his class without impeding on the his effectiveness in game.
I love RP, I have no problem with RP, but when the RPer start crying because my fighter deal more damage then his 8 strenght barbarian... and I "outshine" him at doing damage... I mean yeah, stop building a 8 strenght barbarian lol... or learn that my fighter will do more damage then you but enjoy the fact that your 16 intellect on your barbarian will allow you to succeed on those intelligence check more often then my 8 intellect fighter.

Yeah, I have this exact problem with the Backgrounds. I’ll probably be letting my players just pick their ability scores. This isn’t fun or makes sense from a narrative standpoint.

The Farmer and Guide are just downgraded versions of the Folk Hero and Outlander. -_-

I mean, they’re definitely simplified versions for sure

@@ErrorlessQuill9 None of the backgrounds are fitting for a Barbarian; the Outlander was perfect for it, and WotC decided for some stupid reason to leave it out.

Farmer is probably the only one with the perfect Ability Scores for it. Maybe Guard or Soldier would also work.

@@ErrorlessQuill9 Yeah, but pretty much none of them are as thematic for a Barbarian who is a tribal nomad like, oh say, MOST BARBARIANS?! The guide is the closest thing but is more tailored for a Ranger or a Druid.

Hoping the 2024 DMG has rules for homebrewing backgrounds 🤞🏻 Might need to make a video with a bunch of homebrew options beforehand
