  • "To sand or not to sand? That is my question."
    KXK Dynamics and I work through a video series discussing more advanced sanding and polishing techniques. Jason Killmer, generally regarded as the best wet sander in the world, and Andy Ward, also known as Proficient X, made the trip to OGHQ to drop some knowledge on me.
    In Episode 4, Jason instructs Levi from the Rag Company as we spot sand comparing 1000, 1500, 2000, and 3000 grit side by side using a depth gauge.

    Jason has the most realistic approach to polishing and wet sanding I've seen thus far. Puts his opinions aside and works strictly with the facts in front of him. Excellent series Matt.

    Excellent video and very informative. I have wet sanded to 1500 grit and then to 4000 grit on my caddy once to take out a scratch..its lots of work. I have never done it again since then. Used Megs 105/205 topped with Z5..Thanx for the video.

    I'm watching this videos with Jason over and over again and it's awesome and the more I watch them the more I understand that cross-hatch pattern isn't necessarily the way to do it...

    Great series and learnt so much. If his polishing method gets results (and it must do!) it would saves hours in polishing. Also the lighting in OGHQ is awesome!

    Matt thanks for organizing this amazing knowledge fest....Lol. People pay a lot of money for training like this that is far inferior in the knowledge and or background/experience in the art. Jason Killmer ( AKA: CNC Machine) you have an amazing skill set and bonus is you are great instructor as well.

    There was 20 or 30 micron differences in readings within the small sections pre sanding. Using the lowest reading was a poor starting position as the places the guy sanded could have been the spots at 132 microns.

      Thinking the same thing, there’s videos that a guys name I forget from lake country manufacturing and he talks about how he made this device with a laser pointer to gauge accurately how much clear he’s taken

    So Matt, if I'm understanding Jason here (and I think think think mayyyyyybe I am) is that when you short cycle a DAT compound it essentially acts like a SMAT compound. The abrasive particles don't get broken down as much and remain larger and have more cut?
    I could watch this 20 more times. And probably will. Thank you :)

    • @ObsessedGarage
      @ObsessedGarage  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's the gist of it. The logic is to make as few passes as possible to correct the scratches.

  • @paulrhodes482
    @paulrhodes482 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have maybe a dumb question! When you talk about passes in sanding and polishing is one back and forth movement a pass or just when you have went one way? Sorry don’t really know how to describe what I’m talking about! I noticed when Matt sanded he went back and forth 20 times being 10 full passes but when Levi sanded he just did 10 which would have been 5 complete passes. Sorry just trying to figure out what he means by 8-10 passes. Thanks in advance for any help have a wonderful day.

    • @ObsessedGarage
      @ObsessedGarage  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      20 passes would be 10 up and 10 back.

    some pictures before and after each step would be nice =)
    Just so we have an idea of what he means by "Its not good, but its not bad" what exactly is not good but still isnt bad for a world class pro?
    Thanks for the knowledge though, keep it up!

      Capturing that on camera is not so easy. It's hard enough to see in person.

    Where is the section where he advises which paint meters are good? I can't seem to find it and know I saw it somewhere in the series.

    • @ObsessedGarage
      @ObsessedGarage  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      He didn't in this series. I think Delfesko Positector is pretty much the standard.

    I watch this as I just got a phone call from my shipping company that's shipping my car to me to let me know ahead of time that the employee who drove it onto the crate scratched my entire passenger side. Really unsettling and pissed but just hoping wet sanding does the trick.

    6:55 Expensive paint gauge, but you grew thickness. I get the gauge is an idea, but buying a more expensive gauge should get you more accuracy. At this point, I'm convinced I can just buy a cheap one.

    I think you guys are getting confused with the measurements in theses videos,
    1000 micrometers is 1 millimetre.
    1 inch = 25.4 mm.

    • @ObsessedGarage
      @ObsessedGarage  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nope. 1 Mil is equal to 25.4 Microns

    • @damosil80
      @damosil80 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Obsessed Garage oh so you guys mean thou, when mil keeps getting said straight away I think of millimeters being from Australia we generally don’t say the full word millimetre we shorten it to mil.
