    My father never touched alcohol or any drug and brags about never taking ANYTHING for decades, not even Tylenol for a headache or Tums for indigestion. He quite regularly mentions how he stopped taking Tums because he wanted to feel the effect of the bad food he ate instead of cover up the symptoms. He's 79 and in great physical health. He broke his back two years ago and has recovered fully. And oh yes, I forgot to mention. He could enter a competition for most abusive father of all time and probably win. He has zero friends, his children fear him and want nothing to do with him and none of his extended family talks to him ever. The point being that no one hates anyone for being an addict. We hate people for being assholes.
    However, I do understand the confusion and that it's VERY difficult to break through. Because if you experienced a childhood where your father became a monster when he drank, you will naturally blame the alcohol. You'll assume that your dad was a good guy and that if only he didn't have alcohol running through his blood, he would have treated you better. However, MY experience tells me that there are some people that SHOULD drink every now and then to relieve their tension. I am nearly certain that if my dad drank alcohol, things would have been better. They couldn't have been worse!
    The point is that he never had the thought "Well Jesus fuck me, I've destroyed another part of my children's souls. I need a drink". If he gave a shit, he probably would have hit the bottle. But he didn't give a shit so he didn't.

      That’s sad. He sounds like a controlling old arsehole. I however beg to Feiffer as my dad was an arsehole and an alcoholic who was a bully and cruel, selfish, nasty person, who got worse with alcohol inside him. Which was everyday. I think alcohol and shitty people don’t mix. But maybe if your dad was to let loose a bit and relax with alcohol he may not have been so uptight, more confident and maybe funny. It’s sad that these men get to the end of their lives and have done nothing but cause pain to others and never added anything positive into this world. Hugs to you. Move forward, raise your boys to respect others, to show their emotions and to be themselves without expectations. My sons are awesome. I changed the cycle of abuse and I’m
      So proud of myself. However I did have a drinking problem lol not now though.

      That’s a very interesting perceptive I haven’t considered before. If your dad actually felt the guilt of the trauma he dished out then he may of used drugs to escape it. Drugs are one of the biggest scape goats in society and many addicts are pacifistic creatures that only wish to escape their pain.

    Ok I’ve scanned through the comment section. There’s a huge misunderstanding. The point is not that heroin is good or bad. There is no morality being taken by Rogan or Hamilton. What they are addressing is the criminalisation of drug addiction. And the hypocrisy of the laws that are being made. They are are advocating for personal responsibility and reasonable laws which aim to address addiction not throwing people into jail. Addiction is the issue not the drug. Because there are plenty of people who can very successful use even heroin responsibly and without addiction.

      Totally agree, but many of these consequences are more of a tax than anything else. The stereotypical heroin user is known as a junkie who cant function on a daily basis yet the facts actually show most hard drug users have jobs, families and they pay their taxes the issue comes from the prohibition of illicit drugs and who is profiting from them. Most crime involving drugs is only done because of the terrible outlets they have to get it from. I'm all for consequences and taking responsibility, but lets not pretend that our justice system is all for helping people its basically a way to gain free labor and make money by taxing addicts and it sure as hell isn't setup to actually help people get off drugs. Its main goal is to insure they never get off them and the revolving door continues. At the same time our own government was at war with drugs they used military soldiers and equipment to protect poppy fields in the middle east and to help them ship raw product. Do you honestly believe the US just magically has ended up as the worlds largest buyer of illegal drugs and our government doesn't have their hands in that honey pot? Yes these drugs have consequences especially in daily life and shouldn't be promoted, yet pharmaceutical company's are able to create whatever they want and prescribe them like candy and people justify their addiction to pills because they got it from a Dr and pretend that illegal drug users are somehow beneath them. Justification is like masturbation in the end your only screwing yourself.

    Former heroin addict. Started just sniffing it to forget I lost the girl I was in love with for 10 years and it worked... too well. Was shooting up everyday for years till I figured my shit out. It may sound fucked up and I would never recommend it to anyone but I still think heroin saved my life cause I was absolutely on the path to suicide if I didn't self medicate and drive my attention in a different direction. I see it as the equivalent of being put into a medically induced coma. Huge difference of course cause I caused so much damage while I was "medicating" to myself and others but the end result was the same, I didn't die and I no longer want to. Clean 6 years now and even in my darkest moments I don't think about using. It's about confronting the reason you were running from the problem in the first place and if you never do that you'll always be vulnerable to relapse. Stigmatizing heroin will never fix the problem but only serve to keep the ones affected in the dark. The ones affected aren't just the users, it's everyone that knows them aswell.

I’m sorry, I have a fucked up family too, and my parents were sober. It’s just nit picky word play but it’s important. You don’t hate your dad for being a drunk, you hate him for the way he behaves when he is drunk. If you simply hated him for being drunk, bars and liquor stores should give you a stroke.

We don’t hate alcoholics for being alcoholics, some alcoholics die of old age and a saint. Some rape their kids for 12 years and brutally murder their wife. Alcoholism does not create a cookie cutter example of a deadbeat lowlife. At best it exacerbates what’s already there. It’s a mental health issue that we’re really discussing, or even just our lack of community. • @DStanford94
      @DStanford94 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The difference often gets vaguer as you go along, the point is not the successful heroin addict professor. The point is that the drug did not put either of them in the situation they’re in. It’s a tough one, seriously, I understand the immediate want to respond and say “well if he had never done heroin he wouldn’t be addicted” but again this is irrelevant, he is addicted and may have a lot to offer to his community(basically everyone’s favorite musician was on hard drugs). Now just take deep breath and listen, we have to fully legalize all drugs to reduce addiction and overdose rates. We open heroin clinics, where you get a safe clean medically tested dose of heroin, there’s a small catch, you now have to leave a go work somewhere. Highway trash cleanup, shelters, basically what we have prisoners do. For the addicts doing well we try to get them a job at goodwill or maybe even fast food. Trying to avoid stressful environments but the main idea is to give them purpose for they day. So that when some treats them like a shitty filthy food for nothin drug addict, they can say “hey man I cleaned up 10 miles on I-24 yesterday, go lick dog nuts”. This sounds like a shitty D.A.R.E. ad but it matters, a lot of the reasons addicts remain addicts ironically is that they are shameful of being an addict and basically stuck being a bum because you can get a job high and you can’t get a job sick. Some alcoholics die when they stop and are on the streets. Sometimes even with food and a house that shit can kill you. The final and main reason we need to open addict clinics is to prevent overdoses. The illegal drug trade will be severely crippled by pharmaceutical grade narcotics. Potentially saving millions of lives for our neighbors south of the border.(the cartels’ resistance needs to be handled carefully, cuz they’re gonna be pissed). If you think this is all just great in theory, go ask Portugal, they had people ODing hourly in places like public parks and train stops, shooting up in the neck with kids watching. The next year 0 overdoses…. 0. It was a national crisis one year, the next year not one single recorded overdose. I don’t care how different or big America is, if it halted a thriving heroin trade and usage for an entire country then we should take note…. My family has no idea I was meth addict, I crawled out of that pit alone, because i was embarrassed… My family would have undoubtably helped tremendously but I was to ashamed to tell them and it took longer to stop and it was harder. Give addicts a purpose, half of us only got started cuz its a small town and "there aint shit better to do".

If you run over 30 miles a week constantly you can have heart fatigue, get tears in tissues, and even get stress fractures in your bones. That's when it's bad for your knees. I only run 15 miles a week, that's it. But when people would see me run they'd always always tell me this thinking they saved my life or something. Not true at all. An addict who abuses the drug that is true. Someone who recreationally uses it can be much more compassionate,loving happy etc. it’s when you abuse it daily that those effects subside and you don’t get to that anymore you just get normal.

    I was medically dependent on Oxycodone and Methadone for 20 years and came through it in good health. The biggest problem was being chained to a pill bottle. My problems didn’t begin until all the pain clinics got shut down and I became addicted to heroin. I definitely don’t recommend it, especially under the present legal circumstances. Yes it is awesome at first but when it becomes habitual, the effect is not so great. After 5 years I got clean and intend to stay that way. While I was getting clean I was in with mostly alcoholics and they were some seriously addled folks. I am healthy today mainly because I always used sterile technique and was able to avoid a mortal overdose. Except for the risk of overdose, heroin itself is relatively nontoxic. It’s injection and it’s risk from dirty injection equipment of pericarditis, hepatitis, AIDS etc that will get you in the end. Snorting heroin is unpleasant and will fuck up your sinuses mainly from all the lactose that is used as a cut nowadays. It would have been worse when quinine was the cut of choice.

      Credit to you for having some perspective, I find ex drug addicts to be some of the consistently most anti science, reactionary, obstacles to improving addiction treatment and drug policy of any group of people around. Despite the objectively horrible rates of success of 12 step models I can understand their attachment to that if they feel it was personally life changing for them, but their overwhelming support for criminalization is just mind boggling to me. The number of stories where incarceration led them to sustained abstinence is almost nil. And even in the few stories I’ve heard where that is the case according to them, it was usually incarceration for a crime they did that was not possession or distribution and would be illegal anyways!
