Great tutorial, thanks! The reason you're getting duplicate paths in Illustrator when you "Expand appearance" of the grid is because your shape has both a fill and a stroke, so when you "Expand appearance" it's making a path for each of those attributes. If you set the object to not have a stroke you'll only get one path per "cell" of your grid.
hey! at 4:26 you manually select those paths, but it's easier if you click just one and then in menu "select" you pick "similar". it will select all the lower paths in each folder.
Good tip! Yeah I was doing this in CS6, but here's a link if anyone else wants to check that out in CC: tv.adobe.com/watch/learn-illustrator-cc/live-corners-in-adobe-illustrator-cc/ Also I mention deleting those extra paths after hitting Expand Appearance, if you just turn off the stroke at the very top before doing that, you won't get the extra paths. I almost edited that in, but alas--- I didn't.
Ur tutorial is just like Andrew Kramer's, u explain it very perfectly! I am not comparing but I just loved Andrew and then I saw ur tutorial and I fell in love with u both!😙 *U should start ur channel again*
hey thx . I learned a lot in this vid. I just made the grid in 'paint.net' png image worked great, and I dont need to check use layer as UV. ;as I am not quite having access to the rest of adobe software,.. yet. Really well done tutorial. .
Hey Screen Punch Thanks for the tuto. I was wondering whether it's possible to play a different video for each screen of the wall? if so do you have an idea how I could do that?
10:27 weird, my videos aren't changing, only position of boxes. They are different videos and I've checked all the settings to be same as yours. If I swap Start Group/Finish Group, then the second video only is played. If I disable animation, then I can see both panels, with different videos on them. A bug in Element 3D?
The issue was my drivers (Intel HD 4600). And using "check for updated driver" button didn't find updates for it. I had to go to Intel's website and download their driver app and use that to update my driver.
Hey Dustin thanks for the tutorial ! You were getting the two paths because one of them is for the edge-color of the path, and the other is the fill-color of the path. How to avoid this ? Before executing the Expend Appearance, set the fill-color of the path as None, this will help to get only the desired path.
Hey! Thanks for watching! Haha, yeah I'm kicking myself for leaving that in (I had another comment here explaining how to do that, the parent comment must have been deleted). Anyway, I should add a video annotation there. Thanks again!
Thanks for this tutorial! Is it popssible to have the video footage only in the front face and not in the sides of rectangles? I can do it if I put footage in rectangles with no thickness and behind other rectangles with thickness but is there any option to do it?
I know this is an older video but I was wondering, is it possible to have for example a different video playing on each side of the object so basically as you flip each piece it flips in a new video piece by piece? Or if you can play a video on each individual block or group of blocks?
Hi. Thanks for the awesome tutorial. I really learned a lot!! Just a question though, how do I animate from group 2 to group 3? I mean how do I set up the keyframe if I have like 5-8 groups and want to transition from one to another consecutively? Also if I have like 4 groups, how do I prevent the other groups from showing up yet when I only need one group in my scene?
The color of the lines (mask paths) doesn't matter, that's just whatever you have it set to in AE. The lines won't show in Element, but you just need to select the layer with the mask in the Element custom paths dropdown (see video at your timestamp).
Great tutorial but I have hit a problem. I'm up to keyframing the element layer and suddenly the mapped video is suddenly been elongated by 40% so only the top 60% of the video is stretched over the whole wall. What have I done wrong?
Hey Dustin, Looks like I'm kinda late to the party, so I'll super appreciate it if you respond...so everything seems to be working as it does in your tutorial, except...the boxes are only partially solid for some reason and the material choices only seem to apply to the edges where the paths have been defined. Any idea what might be causing that? I feel like I've been pretty thorough with following your tutorial. Thanks!! :rob
Hey Dustin, Thanks for the tutorial. I'm just wondering if it is possible to flip the individual pieces and have a tiled video wall layered on the reverse side? cheers Justin
Hey I;m currently trying your tutorial , which is awesome. But when I try the multiple object with the displacement it's not working. I did exactly like you. Do youhave an idea ?
Instead of having one video as the uv that covers all the boxes or shapes, is there a way to put multiple videos on there like one video per shape / screen?
Ashleybradbury You could do it the exact same way, just pre-comp your one layer you want to be the video texture, then in the pre-comp scale down and position a bunch of video layers into the squares (copy/paste the grid mask for position reference in this comp). That way you have one pre-comped layer with a bunch of videos inside it to use as a texture.
Screen Punch Let's take it one step further. I want to get a different image on every screen, but with enough resolution so I can zoom in tight on the individual screens. Let's say I make my texture layer quadruple 720p and then enable large textures in my Element options. Will that UV map perfectly to my geometry, and give me enough pixels so I can get in close? It's possible that I'm better off with different Element objects for each screen, but I'm limited to 10 texture maps. That's not enough for my video wall, so I need a workaround.
Hey Dustin. This tutorial was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks. I'm using footage like your example, but for some reason when I make the transition I get bleed over from the previous group. (I go from lightning to a sunny sky but I still see lightning flashes). I checked the illumination channels and that wasn't it. Any ideas?
Hey Ben! Thanks for watching! Actually, I remember running into this, and I don't recall specifically what I did, but you might want to try pre-comping your footage and cutting it short so that it only plays whats edited up until a certain point. Also, even though you might not have anything loaded in your illumination channlel, try going to the Element effects panel under Output/Multi-Pass Mixer and turn down the Illumination value from 1 to 0, I feel like that might have been it when I came across it, which is a bit of an odd issue---. Going to Edit/Purge to clear the cached memory can sometimes help with different issues as well.
+Jean Christophe Duval (Com E-dia) Hey! The footage is just some stuff I shot on my own, the diamond thing I also created in Element and rendered out. Sorry, I don't have them available for download anywhere right now! --Dustin
+Screen Punch oke, thanks master, cause i have same problem. then i can change the diamond, etc with the other footage.. thanks verry much for your sharing...
Hi. Awesome tutorial - I have one problem. When linking my video to the element video wall, instead of just the one video, I have 9. It is tiled. Can't get it to work as one video on the wall. I am using after effects cs6 and illustrator cc 2014. any one help be appreciated. peaCe
Hey! I'm not quite sure what you mean, if you could be a bit more specific. 4 videos one after another or playing at the same time? Would pre-composing the videos help?
well like 1 video starts out and then the scene pops and another video comes up and then it pops and then changes to another video and so on like u had or at least it looked like u had one that had a video it changed and then another video came up and changed again and the last was a guy with a guitar
SuperThunder48 No prob! So instead of going through 2 animations, do like 3 or 4? Since the way the Animation Engine works is animating from Group 1 to Group 2, you would have to animate the Animation Engine Start Group and Finish Group. So lets say you wanted to do 3 screens (and I apologize in advance if this is confusing over a youtube comment), you would create 3 duplicate screen models in the scene setup. Put each screen extrusion on their own separate group, so first one goes on Group 1, next Group 2, last Group 3. Then flip on the Animation Engine in the effects tab like normal, and animate from 0% to 100% like normal. But to get to the 3rd screen you need to go the dropdown in the Animation Engine settings called Start Group, hit the stopwatch, go forward 1 frame and change it from Group 1 to Group 3. Then when you want to animate back to Group 3, you just change the Animation back from 100% to 0%. Hopefully that makes sense. Another way would just be to Precomp your video footage accordingly, just switch from Group 1 to 2 with the Animation Engine, but the video in the pre-comp just times up when it's changing, which actually might be easier.
Hey Michael! Try unchecking the CC button on the TH-cam player. Don't think I have any captions on, there's one annotation in the middle of the video but just for like 5 seconds I think.
An exceptional tutorial on a usable effect. Justin delivers point on instruction with all the details, Thank you, Mr Hudson.
Hi Justin, thank you for unifying the complexities of the three programs into one nice, easy to understand tutorial :)
Wow! This tutorial is incredible. Well explained and great content. Thank you. I'll definitely be using this soon.
hey! at 4:26 you manually select those paths, but it's easier if you click just one and then in menu "select" you pick "similar". it will select all the lower paths in each folder.
I have been searching 3 days to look for this kind of tutorial,, many many thanks'
I've been looking for a tutorial about this technique for quite a while. Thanks for this.
Where have you Gone???! i have just stumbled upon your videos FU*KING AMAZING!! COME BACK!!
Came here from reddit. Definitely worth subscribing for! keep on the good work!
Thank you so much for this. It has resolved my life a little bit.
Turned out well, thanks for the tutorial, very easy to follow.
I watched it and i found it pretty usefull. Thank you for sharing your knowledge..
Impressive! Nice ending, too
in the new illustrator cc you have live corners.
just click the grid, then direct select tool and apply live the radius of the corners.
Good tip! Yeah I was doing this in CS6, but here's a link if anyone else wants to check that out in CC: tv.adobe.com/watch/learn-illustrator-cc/live-corners-in-adobe-illustrator-cc/
Also I mention deleting those extra paths after hitting Expand Appearance, if you just turn off the stroke at the very top before doing that, you won't get the extra paths. I almost edited that in, but alas--- I didn't.

Good stuff - has a very good pacing.
Great vid man! Thanks a million
Nice tutorial. Difference method.Liked.
Really excellent. This is over four years old and still looks relevant to me (but I'm a noob)... is there a better or easier way to do this today?
Great tuts!! worth to learn ! thanks man
Nice Video Need to pick up Element 3d, looks like they have a new version about ready to release.
Dustin from the future xD
Great tutorial; clean and clear. Tres bien. Than you.
hey dude :D,!
NIce tut , you are awesome
BUt i have a quention, if i want more than 2 screen , what should i do ? thank if u help :D
awesome tutorial and nice PRS?
Great vid!
How do I turn each square into a individual screen?

I just recognised you building the lego ship in Andrew's Star Trek vid :o
2:50 how to split (create mask) to random split (randomise geametry form) like broken glass?
Thanks for this tutorial! Is it popssible to have the video footage only in the front face and not in the sides of rectangles? I can do it if I put footage in rectangles with no thickness and behind other rectangles with thickness but is there any option to do it?

Thanks bro nice tutorial!
ONE Recomendation, unfold them from bottom to top and you wont have to scroll down just unfold. XD
Hey Dustin, Thanks for the tutorial. I'm just wondering if it is possible to flip the individual pieces and have a tiled video wall layered on the reverse side? cheers Justin
Duplicate element 3d layer and then in the duplicated model put your back side footage and set rotation to 180
Rather than creating one big image, can each particle contain its own image?
Thanks for a great and really useful tutorial. If you'll excuse a bit of criticism, you really coul've stopped at minute 9. Thanks again!
even though i used a png image i can't see the projected image as texture on my modules. Because?
is it possible to make each screen play something different ?
Hey I;m currently trying your tutorial , which is awesome. But when I try the multiple object with the displacement it's not working. I did exactly like you. Do youhave an idea ?
very very nice !!
make more
Great work :) thanks :D
when i go to render it the wall doesnt have the diffused video over it, why?
What is the background music did u use?
my 3d looks different, i dont have option default lights, just single light and it looks crap. I dont even see the added material
Thanks for sharing!!!

Dustin Hudson It was in fact the illumination channel. It's a shame, because I liked the way it looked on, but I can make it work. Thanks.
when I click ok when editing the 3d object nothing happens so the composition has no 3d object
If you guys want the project file for this, it is under my "3D Video tiles" video on my page!
thank you, nice video
hi how are you
i want videoes that used in here
Not bad for a goober!! Thanks. :-)
Hi Screen Punch

No prob!
Dustin Hudson
thank u i think i understand it now ur the best cant wait to see what u do next :) ^5 bro
You're great
Muy bueno, no lo podrías poner en español, gracias
i like your tutorial i like to see something more commercial i know this is just a basic tutorial but just opinion.
Thank you very much!
Cool!!
ty!
Cool! :-)
epic
Yeah you should seriously consider taking those annoying captions off next time. They get in the way of crucial information
Hey Michael!
Try unchecking the CC button on the TH-cam player. Don't think I have any captions on, there's one annotation in the middle of the video but just for like 5 seconds I think.
