Not all citizens of Nazarick are evil. Some actually have good alignments like Sebas Tian. Also dunno if anyone has explained this but Victim is an angel fetus that protects the 8th floor. His sole purpose is to commit suicide and activate his power which basically freezes all enemies in place so that they can be picked off.
Well, it's not just paralysis, iirc it's multiple powerful debuffs that paired with a certain someone allow for wiping out everything on floor 8 at once.
You gotta understand that this new world is crazy dangerous. Just the fact that he no longer has 100% control of Nazarick means that his own subordinates who are beastly powerful could turn on him. He needs to play the role of the evil overlord to stay in their good graces so he can keep his guild and not have to fight off his own army. He cant just switch up and be a good guy.
@@Sweet_Venom0027 Actually I think several points in the novel make it clear that he hasnt lost any more of himself since first coming here as an undead. He's actually had some instances more recently where he has made his own decisions and not just followed the lead of his servants and they usually lean more towards morally ambiguous/neutral or even positive. The most the race change does is make him mostly indifferent to people he doesnt personally know dying (which some side stuff implies is just how he's always been and has little to do with being undead) which also has exceptions such as not liking the idea of children dying as he has a soft spot for them. Other than that, all him being undead does is forcibly calm him if he feels emotions too strongly. There's actually a what if novel story made by the author himself where Ainz came to the new world several centuries earlier, and by the end of it even after having traveled the world for that amount of time he hasnt gotten any worst than when he started.
and well one very simple difference, here its real, he can actually 'die', its not just a game where you can die over and over with well no "real" consequence
Well, he THINKS he needs to do that, but everyone is incapable of betraying him unless A: whomever specifically made an npc orders it to do so, or B: it's in their programming in some way/shape/form.
@@marmyeater Maybe not. In the case of the former scenario you described, some of the npcs very much prefer Ainz to there own creator and if given the choice would kill them for him. In the latter even though an npc is set with the goal of taking over in mind, they'd never truly act on it cuz the loyalty is far stronger.
Fun Fact: After the events here, under Ainz's rule and Cocytus' supervision, the Lizards enter a Golden Age of civilization and treat Ainz as a God-Emperor. After all, Lizardmen are still monsters, and all monsters under Nazarick are treated very well.
i don't know if it was pointed out already but i believe in the last episode when demiurge says bipedal sheep in the light novel it's explained that he's referring to humans. meaning there skinning people so yeah there definitely evil
It’s so much worse then just skinning them he also makes them eat the dead humans and he also doesn’t just let the people die he casts healing magic on them to heal t he m after they are skinned so he can skin them again
Well yggdrasil was like WoW; alliance vs horde, Undead/ Monsters vs humans. Humans considered all monsters and undead unsightly so the undead and monsters feel the same.
It's kind of a mixed bag. The majority of Nazarick is evil but there are also outliers such as Yuri of the battlemaids, Pestonya, Cocytus, Sebas, and Nigredo who have positive karma but they are also the minority and ultimately still default to Ainz decisions. The problem is a lot of misinterpretation happens with his followers presuming what he wants based on his persona in the game, and Ainz either being too ignorant to realize what's going on, being afraid of how they'll react, or worrying he'll make things worse if he intervenes. But yeah, since he leaves most the decision making to Albedo and Demiurge, the arguably most evil members, that's where the problem most lies.
Yeah he is. Also children's skin can produce higher quality scrolls. Demiurge harvests human skin multiple times by healing them. Then skin them rinse repeat. He's got a whole happy farm going on over there
Eh, in a way you're correct. Cocytus wanted to get hit by the attack by deactivating his skill, but he knew Ains was watching and elected to go against his own wishes
The resurrection process requires the loss of some life-forms, AKA, levels. Zaryusu is weakened from being revived and will need to start training again to get back to his original strength. The weaker you are to start with, the more exhausted you'll be when you come back to life.
Also to add, resurrection magic in this world can't be used on just about anybody, if you're just an average civilian or a significantly weak adventurer then die and someone casts resurrection magic on you you'll just be reduced to ashes since you don't have enough life force to sustain the resurrection magic.
@@camrynduplessis2743 I also believe there was something about the person being resurrected having to have wanted to come back to life for it to work, and there actually are people in the world that make it clear that when their time comes they dont even want to people to try on the off chance that some small part of them does want to come back.

In the light novel, Cocytus actually considered deactivating all his skills so the last attack would hit and leave a scar because he was so impressed. But he decided not to since Ainz was watching and he didn’t want to seem weak to Ainz (it’s also why he never told Ainz that he wanted the Lizardmen spared solely because he liked them as warriors). Spoilers: In the kingdom destruction arc, he treated Brain in a similar way. He took out his god slaying emperor blade and assumed a proper stance when Brain challenged him, even telling him his name after Brain introduced himself (unlike Shalltear). He also gave Brain the cleanest death he possibly could without damaging his katana or doing too much damage to his body since he thought that was disrespectful. He even took his katana despite there being nothing special about it and deliberately took a detour since he knew Brain was protecting something (some kids who were escaping while Brain slowed Cocytus down) so that Brain’s final act wasn’t in vain even though he was defeated.

Trivia time: Ainz's guild, Ainz Ool Gown was the #1 (or top 3) PvP guild. They were infamous for their tactics and cunning. Not to mention that not once did any guild successfully raid their base, even with many many guilds working together at once.
to add to what you said, they were definitely in the top 10 but I'm pretty sure they weren't #1, that being said they were one of the only guilds that high up that had less than 100 members, all the others had hundreds of players per guild iirc. The most famous Guild Raid in the novels is the 1,500 man raid made up of the Players and "Mercenary Summons" (basically NPCs with player stats and skills I believe) raided Nazarick and lost, only making it to Floor 8 where they were MASSACRED.
Ainz ooal Gown is also the only group that successfully raided and took control of nazarick, no guild before and after them has ever managed to do this successfully and Ainz Ooal Gown being in charge of nazarick only made it that much harder to beat. And as a result of conquering nazarick Ainz Ooal Gown was also the only guild to be rewarded with NPC's to put in the guild, no other guild had NPC's like albedo, demiurge etc. There were only players in the other guilds.
@@itsgonnabeokay9341 well Floor 8 - The Cherry Blossom Sanctuary is supposed to be the true last line of defense of the Tomb made up for NPCs including Victim and Rubedo. Floor 9 having Sebas and the maids who are meant purely to stall the invaders so that the Supreme Beings (Ainz and his crew) can get ready for an all out showdown on Floor 10, the last floor.
The guilds majority of players and NPCs have hella negative karma. I’m convinced when he got his undead body he inherited the karma of his character, which is probably affecting his mentality. That’s why they all lean so hard towards evil, but you also have people like Sebas who aren’t completely evil
Ainz is hella evil but also very lawful he doesn’t just kill for no reason and he especially doesn’t hurt the people he rules over like carne village and later e rantel
I think the novel actually hints a lot of the time that his character traits dont actually affect him. The only really big thing is the stunting his emotions if he feels them too strongly keeping him regularly calm. Even his coldness towards those he doesnt personally know could be equally attributed to the hellish life he lived on earth and he just doesnt want to accept that, using his race as an excuse the first time he coldly killed a knight. If his character traits actually affected him he'd have a super high intellect, yet much of his decision making is totally by accident or a result of speed-reading books in his spare time and constantly misquoting them.
novel already clear it.he's not affected his judgment in every event. he kill no empathy in human thats the effect for evil karma but his decision still intack as a human player
Man i love you guys reactions so much. The lizzard reactions was pure gold ! But The whole "Are we evil, why does he need to be like that" Remember, he changed when he embodied momonga. He's humanity is close to completely gone, except for the memories and awareness that he used to be a human playing a game
One of the things the anime never really portrays is that is that he doesn't come from our Earth. His Earth was pretty shitty and dystopian, so he was already jaded as a human.
Like Ross said a lot of his personality isnt actually due to a loss in humanity. The novels paints a picture of the race change actually not changing much of his thought process beyond calming him if he feels emotions too strongly. He still feels human emotion, and even his cold indifference to those he doesnt personally know could actually be more attributed to the life he lived, and he just concluded it's his race change to make himself feel better.
@@nicolajpedersen8506 Yeah there's a lot of depressing facts about their earth that is mostly novel only. Like how Yggdrasil as a game was made as a fully unexplored world that people could live vicariously through because the real world was basically dying, which is why the megacorporations shut it down - it was making people too happy and hopeful. This is also why Ainz reacted as he did to it shutting down, though he didn't know about the government intervention. Or how Ainz' mom died from overwork forcing Ainz to work since elementary age. Or the fact some character sheets imply some ofthe other Nazarick players didn't quit but were killed off or abducted by the government. The writer basically has a dystopia scifi plot written on the sidelines as flavor dressing.
12:50 Remember, he can no longer feel emotions due to him being an undead. Morally yes he doesn't always like what he is doing, but he doesn't feel anything about doing it.
That's a nice touch. I like the theory that as he loses his humanity, we hear his human voice less as his character voice grows more frequent. Great thought and another reason to rewatch the series.
Cocytus uses his rule over the lizardmen in order to learn strategy. He conquers the land around Nazarik along with Aura and an army of the technically low level Lizard man. Through victory's Cocytus learns to control the tide of battle.

I'll save the whole "Nazarick bad" argument for a certain arc in S3, but WAY to many people talk about Nazarick being evil as if they are a wholly negative existence in the New World which objectively they aren't. It goes without saying that they do perform evil actions but they are done for self-preservation and prosperity of Nazarick and it's denizens. They also go on to spread that prosperity to all those that fall under them in the future. I'd rather talk more of this topic later but I wanted to say that for now.
I mean if we’re balancing the positives that nazarick has brought to the new world vs the negatives, including stuff in the light novels it’s kinda hard to argue against the idea that nazarick is a negative existence in the new world
@@ryanchan4495 100% they have committed acts that any sane person would deem evil, but what I mentioned is that some people tend to say that they are "pure" evil as in they only do evil things and provide no greater benefit to the whole (the "whole" being the world). In the LNs and CD dramas they actually do quite a bit of good, they create the most realistic utopia I've ever seen in fiction with a zero percent crime rate and next to no poverty in a kingdom that is essentially guaranteed to last for centuries if not millennia. Unfortunately a majority of the evil acts they commit are done by Ainz's underlings either without his knowledge or they provide sound reason to commit those acts.

One thing you must know about Ainz is that he have a negative karma of 500(-500), which is Extremely evil(though he is not a "Chaotic evil"). Now compared that to Cocytus who have positive 50 karma. Which is probably the reason why he pleads for their mercy instead of annihilation. Governance over extermination. Their karma lvl affects how they think and their decision making.
Come to Nazarick. We got dem lizard cheeks. Loved this episode, It was such a massive pay off for all the build up and great for Cocytus character development. On to Men of the Empire and more awesome fuckery :D
I don't think they're evil in the sense that they take life away for the fun of it, but rather for a reason or self-preservation. The lizard men had a role to play in the growth of Cocytus, and their death was a show of subjugation. I can see why we would see them as evil, but I think that is because we relate more on the level of lizard men, but if we were to scale it into real life perspective we don't even consider the wellbeing of ants, so in that sense they have more mercy than even we do.
Demiurge definitely takes life away for the fun of it. You're right though in that everyone's personal alignment isn't strictly evil. Some have redeeming qualities
@@xdragoonzero0 Nop, if i remember correctly in the novel Sebas is Neutral Good there is in my knowlege only two lawful good npcs in Nazarick, Pestonya Shortcake Wanko the dog's maid and Nigredo the Albedo's sister which we never see in the anime.
as far as Ainz goes, thats 100% it. Ainz literally does everything in order to preserve/defend Nazarick, which will also help understand a certain ep in season 3 and i think its sometimes forgotten, but ppl are not always 100% in character, everyone does slightly unusual(in this case more evil) things every once in awhile
In order to best understand his character everyone has to keep in mind that Ains quite literally shed his humanity when he came into this world as his in undead in game avatar. He is for better and for worse relatively unshackled from humanity's sense of right and wrong. Everything and everyone other than the tomb of Nazaric and it's denizens are viewed with cold calculation, the measuring of benefits vs costs and what those interactions will bring. All done without remorse for the sake of his former friends and cherished NPCs. Any feelings of empathy pity or morality that may occasionally surface in Ains are little more than sentimentality born from the memories of his former life, having no tangible connection to his present emotional state.
Yeah but another thing is that that same loyalty towards nazarik is then later applied to the people he rules over hence is why life is pretty chill and safe in his empire
To add, he also is affected by his character's stats, including his alignment, which is evil. This is portrayed in the 2nd episode when he killed humans and said he felt nothing. It just gets more obvious over time.
It's actually not as if he can't feel emotions still. They're not lingering memories alone and can still trigger, but like you said him no longer being shackled to human morality means it is far more circumstantial and he prioritizes happiness of Nazarick above all else. That, and if he does feel an emotion too strongly his trait calms him back down. He actually is still able to make empathetic or selfishly driven decisions, but it's all down to preferences. For example, when Pestonya and Nigredo acted on their own to separate and protect the orphans during the Jaldabaoth event he was secretly happy and only gave them a tame punishment to save face. Ultimately the children were still spared and left under Yuri, Pestonya, and Nigredo's vigil, an act driven by his soft spot for children. The problem is a mix of his new race meaning he must feel close personal ties with a person to emphasize with them, which actually might not entirely or at all have to do with his race, as some lines almost seem to imply in the novel his conclusion that his race made him uncaring is incorrect and that he's just never realized he's this way, as he was born in a hellish isolationist future, and has had no close ties outside of Yggdrasil ever since he dropped out after elementary school to join the workforce after his mother died from overwork.
@@everforward5561 He's said to himself that if he meets a former guildmate and they don't approve of his actions, then he'll apologize and step down from power if necessary. However, the way I see it that's just him trying to run away from the consequences

Lupa can think of Ains as a hybrid of Tony stark, Batman and Jigsaw !. They do what they need to. If you pay attention and fall in line you survive. He's actually cautious, busy playing 3d chess figuring out everyones weaknesses, while making sure his own guilds weaknesses are getting smaller. Man just wants to protect and figure out what is going on. He just won't holdback while doing it.
There are two main criteria for joining the guild Ainz Ooal Gown: First, they have to be a working member of society. 2) they had to be a heteromorphic race. And a secret criterion to become a member of Ainz Ooal Gown: they need approval from a majority vote. This was a rule passed down from the very beginning.

Can't wait for you guys to get to season three so we can all catch s4 together let's goooo and welcome back lupa son
9:20
Ainz was actually asking demiurge if he told cocytus to say that or gave him the idea because the last time cocytus tried to address an idea, he couldn't effectively express it and Demi had to step in.
@@marmyeater yah just thought AOE paralysis would be a simpler explanation
He really pulled up and said “I am Cocytus, blade of Ainz, and I have never known defeat.”
4:26 This might have been the most anticipated "yeah?" in the history of this channel
It's not just that. The longer he exists as an undead the more of his humanity gets lost, which means less empathy too.
@@Sweet_Venom0027
Actually I think several points in the novel make it clear that he hasnt lost any more of himself since first coming here as an undead.
He's got a whole happy farm going on over there
@@crazedmonk8u forgot about that children thing forgot how fucked it was gotta reread the LN some time
8:21 that step back is cocytus' warrior way of honoring his opponent move, if not for his overwhelming defence that attack would have wounded him
Eh, in a way you're correct. Cocytus wanted to get hit by the attack by deactivating his skill, but he knew Ains was watching and elected to go against his own wishes
@@Inithia well yes, but one thing doesn't exclude the other
The resurrection process requires the loss of some life-forms, AKA, levels.
@@camrynduplessis2743
I also believe there was something about the person being resurrected having to have wanted to come back to life for it to work, and there actually are people in the world that make it clear that when their time comes they dont even want to people to try on the off chance that some small part of them does want to come back.
@@camrynduplessis2743 I think the limitation is so much that only adamantium+ level heroes are strong enough for the resurrection to work. Also eventually the other chiefs are also resurrected which these the chiefs are that strong

Funny how light novel readers criticised overlord s2 and say it's a terrible adaption, when it was the 2nd most watched anime in 2018, like bruh the anime is really enjoyable
It’s cuz it doesn’t equal the goodness of the light novel
@@samuraimo759 his point was no one, who actually matters, cares.
Those statements can both be true.
@@samuraimo759 If someone doesn’t like it, they have the option to go and read the light novel. Absolutely no one is stopping them. But it was still popular, which means people really liked how the anime was made.
Mainly it's the abysmal CGI at the end of the season.
Spoilers:
In the kingdom destruction arc, he treated Brain in a similar way.

If it isn't a spoiler, can you explain what his "happy farm" is?
@@benji6325 Well people miss this part a lot from the anime, also it isn't that much spoiler if you watched season 2 there's an ep forgot the name of it when Demiurge says to Ainz that he got bunch of "Two Legged Sheep" which Ainz thought Demiurge was talking about some magical beasts but what Demiurge actually meant is actual human race and demi human that he refer to them as "Two legged Sheep" or "Abelion sheep"! Ainz still don't know it is a human not beasts and he brushed it off.
@@necromancerz2240 floor 8 is pretty high tho but yeah its not even close to the top

Got any spare bleach for my eyes?
for me laughter is contagious, REALLY contagious, and that's why you're my favourite reactors, almost every video has me rollin'
It's because he's a lich. Which automatically blunts his empathy and humanity.

But
The whole "Are we evil, why does he need to be like that"
Remember, he changed when he embodied momonga.
@@OsnosisBones oh Damn i didnt know that

Yeah there's a lot of depressing facts about their earth that is mostly novel only.

The thing that saddens him the most is that his undead state supresses his horny towards Albedo.
That's a nice touch. I like the theory that as he loses his humanity, we hear his human voice less as his character voice grows more frequent. Great thought and another reason to rewatch the series.

I'd rather talk more of this topic later but I wanted to say that for now.

yes!! That's the surprised face I've been waiting for
Probably the best "YEAAAAHH?!" so far.
Some have redeeming qualities

as far as Ainz goes, thats 100% it. Ainz literally does everything in order to preserve/defend Nazarick, which will also help understand a certain ep in season 3
and i think its sometimes forgotten, but ppl are not always 100% in character, everyone does slightly unusual(in this case more evil) things every once in awhile
This reaction was priceless lol. I was in tears when they peaked in on them lol.
Has he considered what happens if he meets an old friend and they don't approve?
