Right? I saw this young while in school too and I was so motivated. I play trumpet and looking back this cornet part is relatively simple (as the title suggests!) if beautiful, so I think that's why the director exposed me to it early. Even simple parts can be amazingly beautiful; play to your ability. What an insidious bastard...good on him.
Wow. I know my old band director was in Blast (he's either a trombone or euph but I can't find him in here to point him out), but I didn't realize the version of Simple Gifts we used to stage at our end-of-the-year show was made so similar to this one. This is very cool. Since we have a new band director now people aren't so much into the whole staging thing anymore, but I'm going to try really hard to get something like this again.
This is all taken straight out of Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring, especially starting at 3:09. The phrasing and voicing are nearly identical to his original orchestral composition, the only differences really being key signature and instrumentation. But I dig this whole production from top to bottom, so it's great stuff either way.
I grew up listening to this (it's how I best know the Simple Gifts tune) and now that I'm taking a music history course, I knew the voicing in Appalachian Spring sounded familiar!
I was fortunate to see this show live twice. It was wonderful. I wish they would tour it again.
Unlikely given that most of the Star of Indiana vets are in their 40's/50's and dealing with arthritis and have real jobs and lives now.
Love the pause step over the guard section....Cavaliers, 1960's
My band teacher showed us this show in 5th grade and I absolutely loved it

This doesn't capture what it was like to be in the audience and experience this in person. I hope they put this show together again
Doesn’t at all.
My band teacher showed us this last school year and the year before that and I fell in love with it
So simple....so pure....
We were blessed by, the vision of, Bill Cook... He was a special Friend in-Music..
I’m so glad this wasn’t a fever dream of mine and that it actually exists!!
Love it.
Such perfect flugelhorn playing.....
it's a clinic on dynamics and holding notes the exact proper length
Muy grande Copland.
My favorite! 😄
I saw this in 8th grade, such a shaping moment

The cadets are using this as their closer this year
Too bad it's not as good. Or as good when they did it in 1987
I think SCV did a really good job on it in my opinion.
Noel B. Rivera fuck yeah they did
I just shant my pant
It'd be a simple gift to have a black or brown person in the cast.
it'd be better if there were simply the best performers on stage instead of having to meet some stupid diversity quota
+Darkhg that's what i mean
Channel Three Got 'em.
Seriously, STFU!!!
There is actually, not in this part of the show but in the percussion section in other parts of the show.
